Speech recognition technology has come a long way in the last few years – in this in depth, informative and inspiring video which Jon Morrow (Associate Editor of Copyblogger and Co-founder of Partnering Profits) shares his first hand insights into speech recognition for bloggers. Jon does all of his blogging via speech recognition so he seemed like the logical guy to ask to cover the topic – in the video (I’m glad he agreed). In the video Jon makes recommendations of software, hardware (the hardware is key) and even demonstrates how he uses them in his everyday blogging. The…

Review This Blog – Man vs Debt
19 Nov 2009 | 5:46 amLast month here on ProBlogger we ran a community review on a reader’s blog. I posted a link to a blog with some comments from the blogger and then opened it up for readers of ProBlogger to review it. The response from the post was great. 120+ comments were left including some great advice. I also had a lot of emails from readers saying that they learned a lot by reading the suggestions of others – many wanted to see these reviews done regularly. As a result I’m going to try to do these reviews on a monthly basis – today we have another one. As a little bonus to… -
Warning: Watching This Video May Lead to Work! [But It'll Also Improve Your Blog]
18 Nov 2009 | 5:55 amWhat’s your blogging Vice? Most bloggers that I know have at least one – whether it be compulsively checking blog stats, constantly tweaking template designs, obsessing over plugins and widgets, spending hour after hour ‘networking’ on Twitter, becoming preoccupied with SEO and… even allowing ourselves to become consumed by learning about blogging…. and not doing much of it. The reality is that as bloggers there are many tasks that compete for our attention. Many of them are important and can bring a lot of life to our blogs but most of them can also become… -
13 Ways I Get Back into Blogging after a Vacation
17 Nov 2009 | 5:49 amYesterday was my first day back at blogging after a 10 day vacation with my family and on Twitter I commented that I was finding it a little hard to get my brain back into blogging mode. @Mikeachim responded by suggesting I write a post on the daily rituals that I use to get my mind into gear. I thought I’d take his suggestion and jot down a few notes – both as a way of getting my head back into blogging but also because looking at the tweets I received this morning it’s a problem many bloggers face. As my head is a little scattered today (as I readjust) I’m going to… -

BlitzLocal’s Dennis Yu Worse Person Than Originally Thought
18 Nov 2009 | 4:00 amA couple days ago I posted my personal story with Dennis Yu. The post I wrote was the longest post ever written on ShoeMoney.com. Over 4,000 words. This guy is a very dangerous person and I wanted to tell the entire story in as much detail as possible even if some of it was really embarrassing to me. You CAN’T give con men any room to go anywhere and the only real way to stop them is to get the truth out. Dennis has issued a response and as you can tell it’s all fluff about how he is only being attacked because he is hurting the industry. Which is strange because my post was not… -

17 Nov 2009 | 4:50 amAd.ly, the newest twitter advertising network, today announced a 12% referral system. This is HUGE. For instance if I would have signed up for ad.ly through your link just from the few tweets I have done so far you would have made almost 4 THOUSAND DOLLARS. For nothing! Just for giving me a link to signup! If making 12% off of people you refer into the ad.ly system was not enough they are also having some contests giving away macbook pro’s, ipods, and other awesome prizes! So go sign up now and refer your friends. Oh, and not to mention make money off of twitter yourself. I have… -
Dennis Yu – Rise and Fall Of A Con Man In The Affiliate Industry
16 Nov 2009 | 4:08 amI was at ad:tech San Francisco 6 months ago when this little Asian guy came up to me and asked me how I liked the post he had been writing. I had no clue who he was or what he was talking about. He introduced himself as Dennis Yu and told me the posts that Harrison Gervitz guest posted on ShoeMoney.com here and here were actually written by him. I was surprised but in this industry as I have said before everyone is full of shit so… whatever. Ironically 2 minutes later Harrison happened to be walking by us and I called him over to get it straightened out. The actual deal was Harrison had…

The Art of the Paragraph
20 Nov 2009 | 6:11 amAnyone can write a paragraph, but not everyone knows how to write one that other people want to read. You’ve seen it: You open a book, and the whole page is one long block of text. Each sentence in the paragraph makes exactly the same point, said in a slightly different way, and you wonder why they didn’t just say it once and be done with it. Every paragraph is the same length (five lines, maybe?), whether it makes sense or not, and it gives the piece a monotonous rhythm. The paragraph makes a point without telling you why that point is important, and you can’t help… -
How to Persuade People to Accept an “Unfair” Offer
19 Nov 2009 | 6:36 amEver heard of Charley Hill? He seemed like an average, ordinary guy. He lived in a mid-sized town with his wife, two children, and a dog. He went to church on Sunday, coached Little League, and drove a pickup truck. He was friendly but quiet, the sort of guy you could walk by on the street without noticing. But appearances can be deceiving. Charley Hill was one of the most successful farm equipment salesmen in the Midwest. People would travel hundreds of miles to see Charley, even when there were plenty of dealers much closer to home. What did Charley have that other salesmen didn’t? Not a… -
Free Report: How to Become a Creative Entrepreneur
18 Nov 2009 | 8:58 amI’ve written another piece of extended content, this time for Lateral Action. Rather than sending you over there, I’ll just tell you about it here. It’s a free 31-page PDF report (don’t worry, it reads fast) called The Lateral Action Guide to Becoming a Creative Entrepreneur. It’s probably the most personal I’ve gotten about my history, but it’s still heavy on actionable, real-life examples. Here’s what you’ll discover: Why I quit my cushy law firm job and turned to online publishing. How I failed miserably. How I then succeeded miserably. How I… -

What I Learned From Writing 42 Guest Posts in 7 Weeks
16 Nov 2009 | 7:12 amBefore you get too impressed, hear this: I did it all in self-defense. Let me give you some quick background. I have extreme Tourette’s Syndrome, as Sonia noticed recently. Tourette’s makes people move or vocalize involuntarily and occasionally results in unspeakable awesomeness. My motor tics range from eye blinking to punching myself in the face to even stranger things. My phonic tics range from clearing my throat to hooting and yowling and snarling and slobbering and screaming like the Tasmanian Devil. Did I mention that I work in a quiet library? There are only a couple of things that…

Google Chrome OS In Plain English
20 Nov 2009 | 12:30 pmYesterday, Google showed off their new Chrome OS. The new operating system is sure the put the fear of God into Microsoft. Chrome OS is a complete paradigm shift, where you no longer have a desktop. Instead, everything is in the cloud. This has been the direction I have been heading with my business for the past year. I store very little information or programs on my desktop now. My email is handle by Gmail, my documents are stored on Google Docs and ZOHO, my photos are stored at Flickr, my videos are on YouTube and Vimeo. It seems that Google thinks this is a great idea as well and… -
Meditate Your Way to Success and Happiness
20 Nov 2009 | 12:08 amIt’s not exactly what you think is, despite the explicit mention of getting rich in its title. I’ve reviewed a number of different “systems” that are designed to help you make money online, but you’ll learn over the course of this review that Inner Wealth Awakening is a different beast altogether. Rather than giving you an exact blueprint as to how you’ll go about raking in that cash, Inner Wealth Awakening is about providing the “resources necessary fro you to define, design, and refine your life.” What does this mean and why should you care? -

7 Blog Copywriting Ideas for Creating Original Content
12 Nov 2009 | 8:01 amWith literally hundreds of millions of blogs in the vast blogosphere, it’s becoming increasingly difficult to develop a unique brand for your blog by writing posts that are unique, creative and entertaining. The next time you find yourself in a rut, try these 7 blog copywriting ideas for creating fresh and interesting content: 1. Start With the Headline It might seem logical to write the body of the post first. After all, length-wise, it’s the most significant piece of the puzzle. Instead, try coming up with the most creative, most intriguing headline possible. Then design a post… -
Guest Posters Bring Fresh Content & More Traffic
11 Nov 2009 | 11:26 amGuest posters are a good idea for all blogs. Different people have different ideas, different writing styles, and different ways to connect to visitors. Not only is it a good idea for your readers, it’s a good idea for your blog. The more authors a blog has, the more content that will get generated, the more active the blog will appear and, when that happens, search engines can give more rankings and traffic. All of this leading to more sales, revenue, or whatever the blogs KPI is. More bloggers help out a blog in more ways than one and growing a blog with multiple authors, or guest… -
Getting Flash (SWF Files) Into Wordpress
5 Nov 2009 | 5:52 amOne of the most popular posts on BloggerDesign is how to get Flash (swf) into a WordPress post. The previous post is about three years old so I thought I’d write up a follow-up post, as embedding Flash is much easier now as it’s all built into WordPress. With the newer versions of WordPress there is a button to embed media. Embed Button Once clicked, all you have to do is enter in the Flash (swf) file URL, set the dimensions, hit ‘Insert’, and WordPress will do the rest. Embed Window It’s that easy. No plugins, no confusing code, just provide WordPress with the… -
How To Keep Your Blog Running Smoothly When Traffic Spikes
22 Oct 2009 | 8:03 amA bloggers dream is to get noticed. That could be in the form of a post getting re-tweeted hundreds of times, hitting the homepage of Digg, shared a lot on Facebook, getting noticed by the media, or one of the many other ways a blog can get traffic. However, a flood of traffic can quickly cripple a blog and turn that dream into a nightmare. The good news here is that the WP Super Cache plug-in can help minimize issues caused by too much traffic. The WP Super Cache plug-in creates a static HTML file of each post and serves that file up to users. This static HTML file loads faster and is a lot… -
10 Lesser Known WordPress Features
12 Oct 2009 | 2:42 pmWhether you are new to WordPress, or have been using it a long time, there are always features that are available in the software that people either forget about or don’t know exist. So I thought I’d write up 10 lesser known WordPress features. 1. More options in the WYSIWYG editor. When writing your blog post in WordPress, there is a toolbar with items such as bold, italic, and lists. At the of that toolbar is a box with little squares on it. Click it to reveal another toolbar with options to underline, change the font colors, embed meida, undo, and more. Quite a few handy…

Business Blogging Tip - Niche Your Blogs (Video)
19 Nov 2009 | 6:56 amI'm often asked by new business bloggers if it's OK to write about multiple subjects on one blog. Unscientific Poll Reveals 70% prefer text over video
13 Nov 2009 | 7:40 amReading the stats about online video you would think that consumption of video has totally overtaken text as the preferred way we all want our information. Not so, according to my informal and unscientific poll. Inspired by a post by Cindy King, I wanted to find out how people really liked to get their content: text, audio, video or other. As of time of writing this post 81 people took the poll. Here's how it breaks down by preference: Text - 70% Video - 19% Audio - 5% Other (not real clear what other is) - 6% And there are caveats. Many excellent comments were submitted and the bottom line is… -

How To Get Your Pages Indexed By Google

Irman asks: I want to know how many blog posts in percentage normally Google indexes from a blog. I have been running a blog for a year, and I noticed only 30% of my posts are indexed by Google. What steps should I take to improve that? Provided that you respect some basic SEO guidelines, 100% of your posts should be indexed by Google. The basic SEO guidelines are: 1. All your posts must have unique and quality content. By unique I mean that the content of your posts should be found… -
Looking To Get More Twitter Followers? Then Check Twitfever.com
19 Nov 2009 | 8:29 amTwitter is probably the largest Internet phenomenon we have seen in a while. Everyone is using it these days. Affiliate marketers are using it to promote their affiliate offers. Companies are using it to sell products and services. Webmasters and bloggers are using it to drive traffic to their websites. You name it. There are even people making money directly with their Twitter accounts by tweeting sponsored messages. Now you could be doing the same thing. The only detail is that you need to have a decent amount of followers on your account. A mere 200 or 300 followers won’t cut it. -

If your blog is on shared host but starting to get some serious traffic, then you are probably having problems with slow database queries, and in the future you might even be suspended because of exceeded CPU quota. The outcome will be frustration on your side and annoyed visitors on the other side. The first reaction will be to file dozens of support tickets with the hosting company. After that you might consider moving to VPS or Dedicated Server, but before doing that you should try some… -
On Negotiating Pay Rates with Freelancers
17 Nov 2009 | 9:01 amA couple of weeks ago I was negotiating with some freelancers who were interesting in writing for a new website I am developing. We were discussing what kind of articles I needed, the length of each article, frequency and the like. The main point of the negotiation was the pay rate, however. Most of the freelancers were replying to me asking if I knew how much the market was paying for similar gigs, or how much I was already paying to my other writers. Initially I replied to these emails with a number, but that made me a bit uneasy, because the first person who throws out a number usually… -
Linking Out Will NOT Reduce The Google PageRank of Your Pages
16 Nov 2009 | 4:36 amIt is a Google’s world, and as webmasters we live and die by our search rankings, right? One of the factors that both influences search rankings and that most people seem to care about is the Google PageRank. More specifically, we want as much PageRank as possible! Now aiming to increase the PageRank of your pages is fine, the problem is when misconceptions around the PageRank algorithm affect the way webmasters behave. One of these misconceptions is to assume that when you link to external websites you will be losing PageRank from the page where the link is placed. I call this the…

SEO for Flash: 5 Tips and Best Practices
19 Nov 2009 | 10:32 amSEO for Flash – is it a reality yet? One of the most common issues for web sites with poor search visibility involves Google not being able to crawl and index a site’s content. Web sites made entirely with Flash are problematic because there are often no links for search engine crawlers to follow or HTML text to copy. According to the Opera (browser) developer center, somewhere between 30% and 40% of all pages tested contained Flash files representing a lot of content that may not be included in search results or only partially indexed. Despite a large number of sites publishing… -
Google: Social Media is a Party, SEO is Bullsh*t, Advertising is Good For You
19 Nov 2009 | 4:00 amI noticed someone using Google suggest in another story today (honestly forgot where) and thought I’d see what Google “thinks” about social media. Then I tried SEO. Not surprising. Funniest of all, considering Google’s business model, was advertising. Pretty telling when you think about it. Of course this isn’t what Google “really thinks” about social media, it’s Google’s response to search queries and effort to predict what we’re really searching for. Google Suggest works by drawing from searches by other Google users, sites in… -

Those are powerful words and central to the theme in “Socialnomics” by Erik Qualman, Global VP for Online Marketing for EF Educatio, the world’s largest private educator. Why Use Social Media For Public Relations
16 Nov 2009 | 6:34 amRecently, I presented at PubCon on the intersection of social media and PR. The session title was “experts on PR and Twitter,” however the session description went on to discuss a variety of networks. Therefore my interpretation was to speak on the intersection of social media and PR, and not just PR and Twitter. The social web is far more than just Twitter, and if Twitter is the extent of your participation you’re missing out. Lee’s diagram of social media and channels of distribution presents a visualization of a strong approach, where the centerpiece is a blog. The… -
5 SEO Tips for Online Retailers
13 Nov 2009 | 4:00 amOnline retail websites face a unique set of obstacles when it comes to improving sales through better search engine visibility. Repetitive product descriptions, a lack of content and frequent churn of products can all be hurdles to overcome. But with these specific tips for retail search engine optimization, online retailers can turn those challenges into opportunities and maximize their organic search traffic. 1. 7 Components of a Killer Squeeze Page that Gets Thousands of Leads
20 Nov 2009 | 4:00 amBuild a list! You’ve heard it before. As an Internet marketer, email is by far one of the most effective channels to reach potential customers. Almost everyone with a computer has an email account – and they check it often for new messages. If you’re able to penetrate into people’s inboxes (with permission, of course), you’re much more likely to get your audience’s attention for the opportunity to present your offers. The bigger your list, the better. As your pool of targeted leads grows, you develop a solid foundation that’s not affected by how much… -
Gasp! Advertising on Twitter with ad.ly & Sponsored Tweets… Is It Okay to Make Money?
18 Nov 2009 | 1:02 pmWith the rising popularity of Twitter as an online social networking and communication channel, many businesses are using the tool in a variety of different ways including the following: spreading brand awareness directly interacting with customers syndicating links to related content running special promotions In fact, Twitter has its own Twitter 101 Guide for businesses and includes basic how-to, best practices, and even case studies. There are quite a few big brands effectively utilizing Twitter with new ideas to gain traffic. However, almost all of the marketing being done on Twitter… -
Are You A Slave To Your Online Business? Outsourcing for Effective Time Management
11 Nov 2009 | 4:00 amThis is a guest post by Jason Tarasi, who released a new ebook called “Secret Lives of Internet Marketers”. In it he outlines the blueprints and money making ideas that seven successful marketers used to become financially independent. What’s the difference between a professional Internet marketer and a wannabe? Besides hundreds of thousands of dollars in profits, the biggest difference is in the way they manage their time. Both types of marketers have the exact same 24 hours in a day, but those who excel have mastered the art of time budgeting. The biggest mistake I see… -
3 Reasons Why Google Needs to Buy Twitter in Order to Survive
9 Nov 2009 | 6:24 pmAs you know, Google is the search engine and controls an obscene amount of traffic on the web. In fact, it’s not uncommon for many users to spend at least 25% of their time online on Google properties like Gmail, Google maps, and news. With a cash cow business model (a monopoly in search advertising) and a killer brand (”google” it), Google is living large and seemingly invincible. But is this really the case? Is the Google search engine as stable as it seems? With the rise of social media, the search game has changed dramatically. Users no longer just want a single source… -
Article Marketing, Blogging, and the Real Truth About What You Should Promote and How
7 Nov 2009 | 3:56 pmThis is a guest post by Donny Gamble. who writes a blog about creating wealth by combining Internet marketing with network marketing. On it, Donny explains why Internet marketers should have an MLM business Article marketing is a very effective way of bringing in sales and many affiliate marketers are already taking advantage of the method. Article marketers submit their articles and reviews to the following places: 1. Article directories 2. Blogs – their own and other related ones Both are good options, but since this is more or less a blog about blogging, I’d like to give some…

Tips For Dealing With Spam Commenters
17 Nov 2009 | 5:40 amLike most bloggers I really love comments. And it’s great to get comments that express concern such as “Sue – you’re back and…not blogging yet?:)”……. only to discover it’s a spam comments. I’ll tell you how I minimize spam comments below – but first a little on the WHAT. What are Spam Comments? The reason why people write spam comments is to provide links to the spammer’s commercial web site; to get you and/or your readers to visit their site. Common spam commenting techniques include: Adding links to their web site in the… -
How To Moderate All Comments and Posts On Student Blogs
12 Nov 2009 | 7:17 amI’m frequently asked ‘how to moderate all posts and comments on student blogs so that nothing is published until approved by a teacher’ because there are situations where it’s necessary. I’ll tell you how to do it below – but first it’s important to mention educators have differing opinions on moderation and use two main approaches: Students are allowed to publish own posts and approve all comments Students posts and comments aren’t published until approved by a teacher There are pros/cons to each of these approaches which I don’t have time to… -
How To Set Up ‘Alerts’ To Monitor Conversations!
9 Nov 2009 | 4:19 amAn important part of my daily blogging routine is monitoring mentions of me or my blogs on the Internet. Yes sounds very vain! And this is why bloggers normally refer to this as ‘Vanity Alerts.’ I’ll tell you how I do it below — but first let’s talk about why it’s a common blogging practice. How Vanity Alerts Work Vanity alerts involve using email alerts and/or RSS feeds to automatically notify you of the use of specific keywords such as your name, your blog’s name, and your blog URLs in blog posts, news articles, twitter….. While this seem… -
Tips For Measuring Post Success: Part 1 Bookmarking
15 Oct 2009 | 5:35 amAnalyzing blog metrics always gives me a headache! But as a blogger it’s important to know ‘Is the content you’re providing is fulfilling your readers needs?” Metrics provide you with insights into how your readers are interacting with your content and the type of content that interests them. Trouble is there’s numerous metrics you can use, each provides different insight and its meaning depends on what you’re trying to achieve from your posts. So lets start by seeing how I use one metric, reader bookmarking, to analyze post performance. My next post will… -
Managing Students on Blogs…What Role Do You Assign Students?
12 Oct 2009 | 6:35 amI’ve been asked a lot lately about ‘roles of users’ and what role should you assign student users on blogs. Unfortunately there isn’t a simple answer because it’s a balance between: How much responsibility you’re comfortable with assigning your students School and District guidelines Providing them with an environment that’s motivating So I’ve decided to explain the different user roles and I’m hoping others explain how they choose what roles they assign students. The War Between Mediafire and Rapidshare
12 Nov 2009 | 7:11 amGuest post byAkif Have you ever heard of Mediafire or Rapidshare? You may have already used them and downloaded many GBs of stuff. These websites offer something called “one-click file storage”. One-click file hosting is an internet based service that allows users to easily upload whatever they want, except copyrighted materials, from their hard drives or from another similar file hosting provider (called remote upload). This is usually free or very cheap. These sites have many users utilising their services every day. So I thought it would be a great idea to explain these…

The unfair, unbearable burden of turning 18 in Australia
19 Nov 2009 | 4:28 amComing home tonight, I listened to the ABC radio host chatting with a guest who, almost as a throw-away remark, said something that hit me really hard. I was “exercised in my spirit” to send the following to Lindy Burns, the host of the show. Having taken as long on the email as I did, I thought I might share it with you, my dear blog reader, as well. As always, despite its off-topic nature, I open this up for discussion in the comments. Lindy, In your last 30 mins today you touched on a topic — or rather Andrew did — which is very dear to my heart. I tried to get on… -
Twitter for fun and, ahem, profit.

I’d appreciate your feedback, because my “journey” on Twitter may be instructive for your own purposes, but most of all because I want your help to do Twitter better. Copenhagen: a conspiracy of lies and silence! Stop being a mushroom on this issue!
30 Oct 2009 | 1:16 amRegarding the imminent Copenhagen treaty signing, Janet Albrechtsen writes in the Australian: Ask yourself this: why has our government failed to explain the possible text of a treaty it wants Australia to sign? There has been no address from any Rudd minister to explain the draft treaty. No 3000-word essay from the thoughtful PM. No speech in parliament. No interview. No press release. Nothing. But wait, it’s not only the PM who is silent… the media has been stunningly muzzled! Janet again: And what explains the media’s failure to report and analyse the only source document… -
Why are Kyle and Jackie O still on Twitter’s Suggested User List?
10 Aug 2009 | 5:36 am2Day FM is the flagship station of Australian radio network Austereo, and among its star attractions are morning presenters Kyle Sandilands and Jackie O. Well, they used to be star attractions, except they were pulled off the air “indefinitely” after an on-air stunt went badly wrong on the morning of Wednesday 29th July. In an even-more-vulgar-and-crass-than-typical show, Kyle and Jackie O strapped a 14 year old girl to a lie detector — in the presence of her willing mother — and began firing a barrage of very personal questions at the clearly very uncomfortable child. -
Why Alex King’s Carrington WP theme is great.
8 Jun 2009 | 6:32 amI was stunned today to discover that a lot of people just don’t “get” the Carrington theme by Alex King and the team at Crowd Favorite. To me it’s a no-brainer why it’s so damn good, and why I’m basing a part of the functionality of my upcoming Vanilla theme on it. So being a faster talker than a typer, I shot a fast and crappy video explaining my passion. Comments welcome below or here.

Flow to Done: Tap Into Your Creative Source
19 Nov 2009 | 1:55 amA guest by Everett Bogue of Far Beyond The Stars There are millions of distractions that the modern day writer has to put up with in order to get their ideas out there. Twitter, Facebook, your feed reader, they’re all conspiring to distract you from getting your writing down on the page. Did you know, when you’re multitasking between writing and doing something else, it can take up to thirty minutes to get your mind back on track? Why Writing Rubbish is Productive
14 Nov 2009 | 4:35 pmBy Glen Allsopp of ViperChill Since the majority of my working day is now consumed with the task of writing, I’m constantly looking for ways to streamline the process. If I can get quality results in a shorter amount of time, I can spend the rest of each day doing other things that I love. Unfortunately, my creative mind doesn’t always want me to have spare time to read, chill with friends, or go and watch a movie. It makes me rely on idea files I keep tucked away whenever something pops into my head or if I have abused that resource already, I can spend over an hour mind-mapping… -

How to Revise Your Titles for Maximum Results
2 Nov 2009 | 6:32 pmBy Sean Platt of Ghostwriter Dad No one has championed the use of killer headlines more than Brian Clark. His advice on what makes for a compelling headline is gospel to many in this latest wave to crash across the copywriting shore. It’s impossible to argue – magnetic headlines invariably lead to more clicks, more conversions, and more clients clamoring for your content. But what about when your words have turned to whisper, and your old posts have been left to whither upon the WordPress vine? When you first craft a piece of killer content, you want as many eyes on it as possible. -

Is Your Blog Bloated With Unnecessary Stuff?
18 Nov 2009 | 3:59 pmIf you observe the business world, you’ll often see companies releasing new products in a different sub-niche or niche. These products can be closely related to their existing products. For example, M&M’s stayed in the food niche when they entered the ice cream market. Other companies will enter a market that’s not related to their existing niche. For instance, Harley Davidson, the maker of powerful motorcycles, created their own brand of perfume in the 1990s. The term for this strategy is called brand extension. Brand extension can work out well and increase the sales… -
British Press Complaints Commission slammed for its desire to regulate blogs
18 Nov 2009 | 4:23 amThe last few days has seen an interesting standoff developing between the British press regulatory body, the Press Complaints Commission (PCC), and the bloggers it may be seeking to regulate. The PCC is a self-regulatory body set up and funded by a number of major newspapers and magazines published in the UK. Simply put, its purpose is to investigate complaints made against member publications on a number of grounds including accuracy, privacy, intrusion, portrayal of children, discrimination, financial journalism and the confidentiality of sources. (Read Wikipedia’s PCC entry) On… -
Twitter: How much is too much information?
12 Nov 2009 | 7:17 amEven more than blogging, Twitter seems to be the ultimate way to say exactly what you mean, sometimes without thinking about the consequences, and sometimes not caring. Twitter has had its fair share of high-profile spats, but a recent “outrages” concerns Penelope Trunk’s twitter: “I’m in a board meeting. Having a miscarriage. Thank goodness, because there’s a f***ed-up three-week hoop-jump to have an abortion in Wisconsin”. Old news, perhaps — two months is an age in the world of Twitter — but it does still raise some interesting points about… -

Media Convergence? Or Concession of Defeat?
17 Nov 2009 | 6:25 amA colleague of mine brought to my attention the latest example of media convergence: YouTube is collecting video submissions from consumers for use on major mainstream news outlets. It's amazing how quickly we've gone from mainstream media organizations complaining that people who publish YouTube videos and write blog posts can't be trusted because OMG they're not journalists, to co-opting that same content from those same people for themselves. And seeing how more and more media organizations are ready to sue you if you link to their content, I’m wondering how long it will take for some… -
Earth & Industry: Greenwashing of The Worst Kind
15 Nov 2009 | 3:00 amI have a new post up at Earth & Industry that to me showcases the absolute worst case of greenwashing - using deceptive "statistics" about the environment to advance a separate and distinct political agenda.Typically the term "greenwashing" is used when a company misrepresents the economic benefits of a product, or launches a marketing campaign to distract you from a less flattering set of facts. This time it's being done to advance an anti-immigration argument. I hope you'll check it out. -

When Will AP, Murdoch Pay Their Sources?
10 Nov 2009 | 10:53 amOK, so Associated Press wants to charge bloggers (and others) for using as few as five words of their stories, and Rupert Murdoch's News Corp. is talking about removing their content from Google's search services.Good luck with that. Now I'm wondering how much those organizations will be compensating the people they interview and other sources for their contributions to "original" content. Information published by AP and News Corp. is a finished product with a set financial value. And all finished products have raw materials. And all makers of finished products pay for those raw materials.

To Boldly Go Where No Split Infinitive Has Gone Before
20 Nov 2009 | 10:00 amI’ve never given it much thought, but being a writer and a bit eccentric, I thought it’d be fun to look at split infinitives. It seems splitting infinitives annoy some people, while poets and song writers can use them quite often and their use flows with grace. I’ve even used them myself at an attempt to sound more poetic. Not sure what a split infinitive is? That’s okay; it’s not something people talk about everyday—not even in writing circles. In fact, most of us haven’t given it much thought since high school. When an adverb is placed between the word… -

19 Nov 2009 | 12:00 pmAs much as we all love visitors to our site and watching our Google Analytics tick up, RSS subscribers, for most blogs, are more valuable. Not only are they some of your more frequent visitors, thus helping with your aforementioned traffic, but they are also your best community members, leaving the most comments and adding the most to your site. Where a non-subscriber may visit your site once, once a week or whenever they remember to check out your blog, those who get your RSS feed interact with your content much more regularly, usually soon after you post. For those unfamiliar with WordCamp, it is a grassroots gathering, formal or informal, of WordPress fans. It can happen anywhere and in many formats, all focused on WordPress fans getting together to talk about WordPress and their online world. For those familiar with the WordCamp experience, you will not be surprised at my announcement. For those who haven’t had the joy of a WordCamp, you… -

Blog Metrics, Anyone?
20 Nov 2009 | 2:30 amAsk a marketer about social media and they will sing praises, especially with the attention blogs, micro-blogs, and user-generated content apps are getting in mainstream media. But ask a marketer what’s the one thing that they will make them pause about going forward with social media and they will probably say “There are no credible metrics readily available.” Well, that type of reply is not unfounded. I’ve talked to a lot of marketing folks and they say that they would be more comfortable if there was a data source on the metrics of social media sites like blogs. -
The Shrinking Blog Post
18 Nov 2009 | 9:39 amA few years ago, when someone asked the ideal length of a blog post, the common answer would sound like “between 400 to 600 words.” Now, when you ask someone the same question, the reply would fall between 200 to 300 words. This seems to be the case of “The Shrinking Blog Post.” Now, why is this seemingly happening? I have a few theories: The Micro-blogging Effect – Twitter introduced a new level of brevity when it comes to writing interesting content. My guess is that since people want instant gratification in content, readers are now slowly expecting the same… -
Mozilla Firefox: The Blogger’s Browser
17 Nov 2009 | 11:49 amI’m going out on a limb to say that if there’s a browser bloggers should be using, it should be Mozilla Firefox. Apart from the inherent speed and good JavaScript handling for the AJAX-powered websites, Firefox simply has the available add-ons to make blogging an easier activity. Here are a few of my favorite blogger-friendly add-ons that are currently installed in my computer: Word Count Plus – Not blogging platforms have a word counter, nor all bloggers work with a word processor, so Word Count Plus makes sense. This add on counts the number of words from a selection,… -
4 Blogging Topic Trends for 2010
13 Nov 2009 | 5:03 am2010 is just around the corner and I think it’s never too early to look at topics that could catch the netizens’ fancy. The topics I’m recommending are ones that have shown a healthy rise in the last few months that is likely to carry over on to the next year. Here are four topics that may rise in 2010: Television – Several new shows launched this year have definitely caught the viewing public’s attention. These shows include “Glee,” “V,” and “The Vampire Diaries” and these shows could gather more steam by next year and… -

Check If Your Website is Mobile Friendly With W3C mobileOK Checker
18 Nov 2009 | 7:31 pmMobile traffic has been increasing on the internet and its becoming even more important for a website to have a friendly mobile interface as well. The common practice employed by most of the websites is to have a seperate mobile domain and redirect all the traffic coming from Mobile devices to the mobile subdomain. While, this is a neat practice, not many websites are still “mobile friendly”. W3C mobileOK Checker performs various tests on a Web Page to determine its level of mobile-friendliness. The tests are defined in the mobileOK Basic Tests 1.0 specification. A Web Page is… -

[Torrents] Pirate Bay Shutting Down for Good
17 Nov 2009 | 7:59 amPirate Bay is known as the largest torrent tracker on the Internet. As per the announcement made today, the service will be shutting down for good soon. While the is still up, it will soon be going down. “Now that the decentralized system for finding peers is so well developed, TPB has decided that there is no need to run a tracker anymore, so it will remain down! It’s the end of an era, but the era is no longer up2date. We have put a server in a museum already, and now the tracking can be put there as well,” the Pirate Bay crew write on their blog. [How-To] Download Torrents Without BitTorrent
16 Nov 2009 | 7:11 pmI covered the Torrent terminology in my earlier article titled Complete Torrent Lingo Guide (Understanding Torrent Terminology) where, I wrote about, trackers and BitTorrent clients and also how the torrent download works. Just in case, if you haven’t read that post ( do read it now, click here), Torrent downloads work on the BitTorrent protocol and the BitTorrent client makes use of the trackers to download / share bits of data. While downloading torrents is not too tough, there are times when the torrent traffic is shaped at either the proxy server level of at the ISP level. There can…

Two Weeks of Trash Talking
2 Nov 2009 | 5:43 amTwo weeks. Not one. Not six. Two. Two weeks of practice (aka rehearsal) before we launch your blog. That's both a minimum and a desired maximum. Until you write your first blog post, you are perfect. But then, perfect makes practice, hmm? The goal of the two weeks is to get familiar with the blog tools and software. And the only way you're going to get used to the tool is to use it. When we first set up your account (WordPress, Typepad, whatever...), we make sure to option OUT of allowing search engines to index your site during practice. At launch, we opt IN for search engine… -

26 Oct 2009 | 9:57 am"If we did all the things we are capable of doing, we would literally astonish ourselves." - Thomas EdisonI am amazed at how many of us simply stumble upon our own success. Just go out and do it. Fail? Fall Down? Fine. Get back up and get 'er done. Just ask David Armano's Value of Visual Thinking deck (see slide # 57). Twilf: Tweep I'd Like to Follow
16 Nov 2009 | 12:00 pmMashable reports that the word "Twilf" has entered Twitter Vernacular thanks to an episode of Current's Super News. In the cartoon Sarah Palin is referred to as a Twilf. The word has a more wholesome meaning then you might think. The Urban Dictionary says Twilf is a "Tweep I'd like to follow." The problem with Sarah Palin being a Twilf is she hasn't been twittering lately. Here is the crazy Current cartoon where the word twilf comes up. Facebook Status Update About Pancakes Clears Suspect
12 Nov 2009 | 6:00 pmA 19-year-old New York City robbery suspect was exonerated thanks to his Facebook page. The Facebook page contained a status update that was posted 1 minute before the robbery occurred. The man asked his girlfriend about the location of his pancakes in the update. Facebook status can be updated from anywhere (and by anyone with access to the account) but police say the update was made by the suspect at a computer at his father's apartment. The AP says the case is thought to the first where defense lawyers have used Facebook to establish a person's innocence. Permalink | Recent Headlines |… -
Britney Spears Twitter Account Hacked Again
12 Nov 2009 | 11:00 amBritney Spears' Twitter account, @britneyspears, was hacked for at least the third time today. A downside to having a high profile Twitter acount is that hack attempts are more likely. Britney's account is the 2nd most followed and the 8th most listed. Unlike in the past when hackers have taken over groups of high profile accounts Britney's Twitter appears to have been the sole target. The hackers tried to make it seem as if Britney is a Satan worshipper. Britney's web team - which has its own list now on Twitter - tweeted the following apology. On Twitter Lists and Twitter Influence
5 Nov 2009 | 7:40 amWe have compiled a list here of the 200+ most listed Twitter accounts. Listorious has launched a list here of the most followed lists on Twitter. Twitterholic has a list here of the most followed Twitter accounts. All three of these help measure how much influence a Twitter account has but none of them alone provide an accurate measure of a Twitterer's reach or influence. Trying to measure how much reach or influence a given Twitter account has is an increasingly complex issue. You would need to factor in followers as well as the number of lists someone is on. In addition, specific lists will…

Is Automattic Evil?
18 Nov 2009 | 5:03 pmStick around the WordPress community for a period of time and you’re bound to come across a few folks who say Automattic is an evil company or Matt Mullenweg is evil in the way in which he runs WordPress.org. The more time I spend talking to Matt and with other employees of Automattic, the more I don’t understand where these thoughts and feelings of evilness come from. Sure, there is a decision made from time to time that a vocal group of people disagree with but you can’t make the right decision 100% of the time. Who Are the Outliers of Modern Publishing?
4 Nov 2009 | 11:34 amHaving just finished reading Malcolm Gladwell’s Outliers, I was struck with the immediate question: who will be the next outliers of the now-turbulent publishing industry? Who will do for the publishing world what Bill Gates, Steve Jobs and Bill Joy did for the computer world? To put this question in context, I refer to Gladwell’s theory. He claims the most successful people in the world don’t just get there by magic fate or raw talent, but rather by an inexplicable blend of opportunity, luck, hard work and timing. (By the way, Outliers is an excellent read.)While I… -

Money or Efficiency? Know Where to Place Your Focus
23 Oct 2009 | 11:06 amSomehow, society has been perverted to the point that we think crap can be turned to gold, so long as it makes money. Worse, the venture capital and corporate acquisition culture that has soiled the tech space since the ’90s has brainwashed us all into thinking that in the end, the payoff justifies the means. That’s all bullshit, people. There is no substitute for efficiency and sustainability, and nature proves this time and time again. For some reason, humanity continually repeats its mistakes of the past by ignoring the rules of nature, but in the end, the truth is still the… -

Whether you’re hacking your way around a golf course, running a business, or trying to figure out who to follow on Twitter, you’ll get the best results if you always strive to operate efficiently. WordPress Wins CMS Award
17 Nov 2009 | 7:48 pmI was very excited last week to learn that WordPress has been awarded the Overall Best Open Source CMS Award in the 2009 Open Source CMS Awards. This is a landmark for us, as it is the first time we’ve won this award, and it marks a shift in the public perception of WordPress, from blog software to full-featured CMS. No small contest, the Open Source CMS Awards received over 12,000 nominations and more than 23,000 votes across five categories. As Hiro Nakamura said when he first bent time and space to land in Times Square: “Yatta!” In addition to winning in the Overall Best… -
Core Contributors at WordCamp NYC
17 Nov 2009 | 5:14 amWordCamp NYC was last weekend, and it was crazy awesome to have so many WordPress users and developers together in one place (final numbers to come, but looks like over 700). One of my favorite moments was right at the end, when someone suggested getting a picture of the core contributors (I’d asked them all to stand so people could applaud them when we were doing the closing remarks). Some of them were camera shy and kept out of the happysnap, but here’s a handful of the people who make WordPress what it is. From left: Matt Martz (sivel), Jeremy Clarke, Shane Froebel (^BuGs^),… -

If you just want the list without my asides, check out the full schedule at WordCamp.org. WordCamp Phoenix is first up, on November 13. I’d planned on attending this one myself before they changed the date (it was originally scheduled for the 7th), but will sadly have to miss it as it conflicts with WordCamp NYC. 11 Ways to Influence People Online and Make Them Take Action
11 Nov 2009 | 10:41 amInfluence can be defined as the power exerted over the minds and behavior of others. A power that can affect, persuade and cause changes to someone or something. In order to influence people, you first need to discover what is already influencing them. What makes them tick? What do they care about? We need some leverage to work with when we’re trying to change how people think and behave. But there’s a problem. You won’t be able to meet and get to know everyone. You won’t have the luxury of learning their life history and what they hate or love. In the online… -
How to Achieve Your Goals by Changing the Way You Surf the Web
5 Nov 2009 | 8:38 amEveryone has their favorite way of using the internet. Many of us search to find what we want, click in to a specific website, read what’s available and click out. That’s not necessarily a bad thing because it’s efficient. We learn to tune out things we don’t need and go straight for what’s essential. This goal-oriented way of surfing the web is largely based on short-term results. For example, finding facts to write a blog post, doing a comparison before making a purchase and reading a news site to find out what’s happening right now. If you do all… -
An Essential Marketing Principle: Give Before You Try to Get
18 May 2009 | 12:31 pmExperts have talked about this before. How many times have you read about the importance of ‘adding value’ for your audience? How many times have you read about ‘building trust’ with your readers/prospects? Many, many times. You know it well. Every marketing guru has spoken about this topic. I’m sick of hearing it. But it STILL bears repeating. Because some people still don’t get it. What’s the underlying principle for successful online marketing, selling or networking? The art of giving before you try to get. Before you get something from… -
Twitter Marketing: Why You Don’t Need to Mass Follow Users
22 Apr 2009 | 10:34 amA few days ago Twitter announced on their status blog that all Twitter users are only allowed to follow a maximum of 1000 people a day. This rule was designed to cut down on ‘follow spam’, the act of following many Twitter users in order to get them to follow you back or click on your links. When combined with the already existing limit based on follow ratios, this means that it will be more difficult for marketers or self-promoters to rapidly increase their Twitter follower count by following many people. The old days of following thousands of users a day to… -
Ad Swaps: A Smart and Easy Way to Get Free Traffic
15 Apr 2009 | 4:48 pmAfter yesterday’s post on marketing without search engines, I decided to follow up with a strategy you can use to get quality free traffic. One of the easiest ways to get visitors to your web site is to spend money. Nothing is more effortless then paying for traffic. But if you can’t afford it or don’t want to pay, there’s an equally simple but free way to get traffic: ad swaps. An advertisement swap or ad swap is simply an arrangement where you agree to put up someone else’s ad on your site or email newsletter in exchange for them doing the same. The goal of an…

Technorati State of the Blogosphere 2009
11 Nov 2009 | 10:25 pmTechnorati released its annual blogger survey results recently. The 2009 State of the Blogosphere report is available on Technorati's site (follow the preceding link to view it). This year's study provides some interesting insight into the goals and habits of nearly 3,000 bloggers as well as statistics from Technorati's index and Lijit. Perhaps most interesting in the report is the breakdown of bloggers into four primary categories: hobbyists, part-timers, self-employeds and professionals. Each group has different goals for their blogs and invests different amounts of time on their blogs.

7 Top Content Tips for Bloggers – Part 6: Management
19 Nov 2009 | 7:32 amContributed by: Roger C. Parker Blog marketing success involves blog content management. Management implies that you not only plan your blog posts, but that you manage—or protect—them so that they will be available for later use. Blog content management becomes necessary when you view yourself as a proactive—as opposed to reactive—blogger. Proactive versus reactive bloggers Most bloggers are reactive. Most of a reactive blogger’s posts are in response to topics currently in the news, or currently being addressed by popular and influential bloggers in their field. Accordingly, their… -

3 Simple Words That Are Destroying Your Blog
12 Nov 2009 | 7:58 amDid you know that your blog is slowly being eaten away by words? Seriously! You may not realize it yet, but your blog could be so much better if you only knew the definition of these three words. Did you want me to tell you what they are? Productivity You’re probably thinking that productivity is a good thing. Well, yes and no. You see, many bloggers aren’t using this word properly. The word productivity means the state of being productive. That is, you have to actually produce something to be productive. Do you have Google Wave? So what? I wrote five posts across four separate… -
How a Kitchen Timer Helps My Blog
11 Nov 2009 | 7:00 amThanks to a tweet from one of my tweeps on Twitter, I recently discovered the Pomodoro Technique, a unique system of time management. Pomodoro means tomato in Italian, and the technique is named for the tomato kitchen timer that the creator of this system used when first implementing his system. The premise behind the Pomodoro technique is that you set your timer for 25 or 30 minutes and seriously focus on one task for that time. At the end of the 25 minutes you get a 3 to 5 minute break to do whatever you want. Tweet on Twitter, check Facebook, grab coffee, read blogs…and then set the… -
There is no such thing as a shortcut to a successful blog
10 Nov 2009 | 11:39 amOver the last week or so I have had the unpleasant experience of watching as a so called “marketing firm” uses some rather awful “SEO tricks.” Why have I been watching this? Mainly because they have sold their bag of snake oil to one of our blogsite design clients. Let me first qualify why I am writing this post. I am not at all bitter at this firm. Their own stupid ass practices will net them just what they deserve. The sick feeling I feel in my stomach, while I get the feeds in my RSS reader are for our former client. What sickens me the most is the fact they were…

31 Oct 2009 | 7:03 amLooking for really affordable premium WordPress themes?Happy Halloween folks! As you might have noticed, Blogsessive has changed its “clothes” on this special occasion. Don’t worry, the nerd will be back tomorrow, when Dracula “leaves the building”. Now, since this is a special occasion, the topic for today’s article has been inspired by a comment I received on part 6 of the Corporate Blogging Guide: I think we all start our blogs worried people might not like us and when they do, we don’t want to change for fear of losing readers. jParse: A jQuery XML Parser Plugin
20 Nov 2009 | 3:48 amjParse is a jQuery plugin that can asynchronously fetch an XML file (AJAX, in other words) and parse it for display. It works in all modern browsers, plus Internet Explorer 6+, and the file is only 1.8KB in size. It’s basic usage looks something like this, where #item-cont is the element that the XML content will be displayed in: $('#item-cont').jParse({ ajaxOpts: {url: 'digg-feed.xml'}, count: '#item-count' }); The script’s biggest limitation is that you can’t request an XML file from another domain, because of JavaScript’s Cross-Site Scripting taboo. You could, if… -
Preventing the Caching of Dynamic Functions in WP Super Cache
19 Nov 2009 | 3:40 amWP Super Cache is commonly used to speed up WordPress blogs and reduce server load. In essence, it stores static HTML copies of pages on your blog so they will load faster the next time they are accessed. It works fairly well, but with one caveat that may be frustrating at times: The pages don’t change until the cache expires (every 30-60 minutes or so) and the static page is updated. That makes it hard to do some things where you need to process information unique to each user, such as checking HTTP referrer headers and serving ads to visitors coming from search engines. Fortunately,… -

Of course, when it comes to the security of your WordPress site, these techniques are merely the beginning. As you continue in your WordPress travels, you will discover many, many more ways to increase the security of your site. CSS white-space Property
17 Nov 2009 | 3:34 amHere’s an interesting and little-mentioned CSS property: white-space. With it you can prevent an element’s contents from line wrapping, create pre text, even pre text that wraps when necessary. The syntax is like this: #mydiv { white-space: nowrap; } The above example is fairly self-exaplanatory; it prevents the text inside the #mydiv div from wrapping. If #mydiv had a fixed width, the text would spill out of the container. However, there are practical uses for this behavior. Have you ever wanted to have an inline element (perhaps a span containing the category a blog post is… -
WordPress Theme of the Month: Glassical
16 Nov 2009 | 3:51 amThis month’s featured WordPress theme is Glassical, once again brought to you by Smashing Magazine. Glassical is a nice clean theme with a good attention to detail. It’s light and modern, and it has support for threaded comments and other neat WordPress features. The typography is nice, and I particularly like the slick, glassy search bar. The metadata section on post pages is interesting. I like the tags’ styling, though I’m not too crazy about expending so much room for showing which categories are applied to a post. (Ideally a post should only be assigned to one…

What Does Your Blog Say About You
17 Nov 2009 | 11:05 pmDot over at Deeper Issues and I must be blogging sisters as we both enjoy looking at, experimenting with and/or changing our themes. In the beginning days of blogging, I changed the theme to this blog quite regularly, but now use my test site to play with new themes so I don’t confuse all of you by making too many changes here. On my next project, which is STILL under construction, I’m not only getting posts written for the unveiling, but am redesigning the theme. I’ve changed colors, added widgets, created and recreated the header a half dozen times, and played with so many… -

Let Your Blog Work For You – 25 Ways
10 Nov 2009 | 5:54 pmThe topic of how to make money with a blog gets beat to death. You’ve read it. I’ve read it. We’ve all read it. Truth be told, not all that many bloggers are making money WITH their blogs. What’s happening instead is people are making money BECAUSE they have a blog. Today’s Lesson Placing ads on a blog may generate a small income, however, those who claim to have become “six figure bloggers” by doing this, appear to be the exception, not the norm. Their success comes from having HUGH amounts of traffic landing on their blog(s) and clicking on their… -
If He Can, She Can
7 Nov 2009 | 3:02 amI’ve been wanting to use this photo for a long time. After rereading the comments on the “Large Gender Gap Evident In Blogosphere” post, today is the perfect day. Many who commented on the gender gap post were surprised the ratio of male to female bloggers was so large (66.7% males vs 33.3% females). Some doubt the accuracy of the numbers as the survey was done by Technorati, a site that appears to be dominated by males. But, that’s not the topic for today’s post. Today we’re talking about female bloggers. Today’s Lesson When I started blogging in… -
Large Gender Gap Evident In Blogosphere

It doesn’t matter if you’re a man or woman, rich or poor, old or young, educated or not; the door to blogging is open. However, it appears more men walk through the door to blogging than women. Today’s Lesson Technorati recently released their “State of the Blogosphere 2009″ findings. From a questionnaire to which 2900 bloggers responded, Technorati compiled an extremely comprehensive report which includes (but in not limited to) the following information with…

16 Nov 2009 | 4:02 pmAndy Bargery, the organizer of London Bloggers Meetup, liked my blog and asked if I could present the 58 Ways To Build A Better Blog article at one of the events. So on November 3rd I did the presentation at the London Bloggers Meetup. It was my first ever presentation outside the university doors. To try and not bore people too much, I shortened the article, made it even more to the point than it was and added a joke or two. How to boost your blog traffic using trackbacks
10 Nov 2009 | 4:02 pmHowToMakeMyBlog reader Daan had the following comment to my recent post about how I built my blog traffic. 50 visitors from a trackback is a great number, in most cases it is higher than what you would get from blog commenting, so I asked Daan if he could write a guest post about his experience with building traffic via trackbacks. I Am In Backup Hell
6 Nov 2009 | 3:08 pmI’ve had a motherload of technical issues over the course of a whole week. Many of which have resulted in failed hardware or Microsoft technology hickups. No one is never happy when unrelated, problematic events occur one right after the other and one never gets the right amount of sleep until the dragon has been slayed and blood is spilled. Why I Removed TweetBoard and Used Twitter Widgets Instead
26 Oct 2009 | 10:53 pmThe Tweetboard idea from 140ware was an interesting way to display your tweets on your website. For a while I’ve used it on The Network Technician but I felt like it was lagging somewhere. Tweetboard had a nice pull out interface from a tab that displayed on the left side of the screen but it didn’t do it in a smooth way. Once the whole tweetboard was open in had an ugly color that didn’t blend nicely with my site. I had no clue if that was customizable. Also it just displayed all my tweets. Of course you had to log in with your account to make Twitter updates but I had a… -

How to Remove “Powered By Machform” From Email and Contact Form
23 Sep 2009 | 7:38 amThe Machform contact form from Appnitro is one of the best forms for Wordpress, in my opinion. It’s relatively inexpensive and for the features, flexibility, and ease of use it’s certainly worth paying for. One of the reasons why I purchased the Machform from Appnitro is for it’s anti-spam capabilities and features that the contact form submitter sees. Unfortunately, for a purchased plugin to Wordpress, they add their own link love to the footer of your contact form and to any response emails sent to anyone submitting a contact form. It’s unacceptable if you want to… -

Why You Need A Mastermind Group
20 Nov 2009 | 5:43 amYesterday, I was over in Celebration, FL for a meeting of the minds. It was a mastermind meeting. Several people in internet business gathered in a board room and talked shop for several hours. The way it worked was this: First, presentations. Nothing formal, but if any of the group members wanted to present some useful information, that would happen. Hot seats. Each of us would take our turn on the hot seat. We could talk about our businesses and our challenges, and get help from the rest of the group. It is incredibly powerful. In 2009, one of the biggest contributing factors to my business… -
Are Bloggers Just Crappy Business People?
17 Nov 2009 | 9:42 amThe question had to be asked. In fact, a few of us were even discussing this very question when I was in Vegas for BlogWorld Expo. Most bloggers wonder how to make money with a blog. The default answer seems to be to write a lot, build traffic, then sell ads. That blogger thinks he’s building his “business” by writing even more. Problem is, it oftens leads to this…. So, the plan is that you’ll start a blog, write a lot, write some more, get famous and then sell a few ads on the blog. Attract sponsors and cash in, right? With so much competing noise out there, this kind of… -
Return From Pukecon
16 Nov 2009 | 1:07 pmSometimes things just don’t go according to plan. As my subscribers know, I flew to Las Vegas last week for Pubcon, a leading conference for the search marketing and SEO industry. I had high hopes and was expecting a good time. Day 1 went well. Picked up some good tips, took some notes and met up with a few people. That night, I decided to get some work done rather than attend the Pubcon party because they were doing it at a night club. I don’t care how cool people think they are at parties at a night club, I find it counter-intuitive for a conference built around networking. It is so… -

9 Nov 2009 | 6:10 amBack in 2008, I was walking inside the Luxor hotel in Las Vegas. I was heading over to a party thrown by B5 Media inside one of the many restaurants inside Luxor. I couldn’t find it. I was straight-up lost. Just to vent, I took out my phone and tweeted about it. Within a couple of minutes, I got a Twitter reply from the Luxor telling me where to find the restaurant. I was so damn impressed, I tweeted about it. 16 Nov 2009 | 2:50 amWordPress is the best blogging platform and there is no doubt about that, other than that it is also becoming the first choice CMS (content management system) for corporates too. One of the major reason for the same is that WordPress is pretty simple and even though it has got less inbuilt features, there are thousands of plugins that are available for free and extend the it to match the existing CMS. It’s simplicity attracts thousands of developers and is one of the fastest growing CMS at the moment. Because of this simplicity offered by WordPress, there are many developers who create… -
Managing your images in WordPress
13 Nov 2009 | 2:07 am“A picture is worth a thousand words”. This phrase emerged in the USA in the early part of the 20th century. Its introduction is widely attributed to Frederick R. Barnard, who published a piece commending the effectiveness of graphics in advertising with the title “One look is worth a thousand words”, in Printer’s Ink, December 1921. It refers to the idea that complex stories can be described with just a single still image, or that an image may be more influential than a substantial amount of text. Today in our dynamic world this is more important than ever before. Today… -

Your blog design as your first impression in the virtual world
26 Oct 2009 | 7:22 amDoes your blog design really matters after all or is it just a luxury toy for the ultra-rich bloggers? Well, it plays approximately the same role in representing your blog to the world as looks do for women. A pretty woman will definitely be “right” at the moment she appears in front of the people. Later on, she may turn out to be stupid, boring, or even malicious, but she has won the first battle anyway. The same goes for your blog. You may have the best of the content however if you don’t have a good blog design, you’ll still lose a lot of readers just because the…

Sorry guys, but those are NOT membership sites
19 Nov 2009 | 4:28 amThe latest membership site launched a couple of weeks ago in a blaze of hype. Limited numbers, doors dramatically reopening for a day to let those desperate stragglers in, lots of talk about the “last chance this year” and so on. This particular one was for three months at $297 and was typical of several such launches this year. But these aren’t membership sites! They’re training courses. Sure they contain lots of information, no doubt very useful and beautifully presented, but at the end of the day they are information products just like the ones we have been selling for years, only… -
Why you need to make me cry
18 Nov 2009 | 4:02 am“A good writer can either make people laugh, or make them cry. A great writer can do both, in the same piece.” Image: federico stevanin / FreeDigitalPhotos.net I talked about why we HAVE to become better writers on our blogs in my last post. And since then I’ve spent a few days analyzing some amazing blog writing in order to discover the secret formula and share it with you. Of course, there isn’t one….. Great posts come in all shapes and sizes, in every style and format. The best I can do is to select some elements that may be used to create great writing, and I’ll write about… -
Why you have to become a better writer
15 Nov 2009 | 3:25 amI had the pleasure of interviewing Penelope Trunk last night for the forthcoming book Beyond Blogging. She’s interesting, helpful and full of insight, and she made a major contribution to the book, and you should go and join the email list for the book when you’ve read this. But there was one thing she said that left me lying awake last night and that kept running through my brain: “Look at all the top blogs out there, the so called A-Listers. One thing they all have in common is the quality of the writing. Even the technical ones have extraordinary, fantastic writers.” Of course,… -

U.S. Caselaw in Google Scholar
17 Nov 2009 | 11:03 amLast night, an important new feature launched on Google Scholar: more than 80 years of US federal caselaw (including tax and bankruptcy courts) and over 50 years of state caselaw is now fully searchable online, for free at Google Scholar. This project is the culmination of much work, led by a remarkable engineer at Google named Anurag Acharya. Shortly after I arrived at Google, I heard about a small group of people working to make legal information available through Google. Given my background, I was particularly interested to see if there was a role for me - and thanks to Google's culture of… -

10 Nov 2009 | 4:39 pmCould not be more excited about this news: Freedom(tm), Daniel Suarez's sequel to Daemon is now available for pre-order at Amazon. Let the count-down begin: the book is available in just over 8 weeks! In case anyone doesn't remember me raving about Daemon, here's my original review, and January's follow-up post discussing the soon-to-be re-released Daemon in hard-back. University of Richmond Law School
10 Nov 2009 | 9:00 amImage via Wikipedia Though I don't practice law, I'm a proud graduate of the University of Richmond Law School - it was an extraordinary three years of my life. It was there that I really learned how to think critically, learned how to argue (much to my wife's chagrin), and learned how to be an entrepreneur. Yeah, you read that right. Law school is hardly where one thinks about being (let alone becoming) an entrepreneur. Yet along with a group of fellow students, I founded a law journal that was the first in the world to publish online - with the Dean's active support and the encouragement of… -
Twitter list word cloud
5 Nov 2009 | 12:09 pmI've been enjoying Twitter Lists in the last week... for those that don't know, Lists gives others the ability to "curate" Twitter IDs into groups. You can see which lists I've been added to by clicking here. It struck me that this is the first time I've had such a view into how others categorize me. I took the words others used to describe me, and then went to Wordle to generate a word cloud based on those words. (I'll bet someone builds a service to generate these word clouds automatically within a week.) Gets it about right, actually. -
What Would Augsburg Do?
5 Nov 2009 | 5:47 amA couple weeks ago I attended the fall board meeting for Augsburg Fortress. Augsburg is a publisher affiliated with the ELCA, which is the largest Lutheran denomination in the United States. My connection to Augsburg is a result of a speech I gave to a group of leaders in the ELCA several years ago, and has been a remarkable experience for the last two years. It’s remarkable for several reasons: it’s my first experience sitting on a board, so that alone makes it a worthwhile effort. But what makes it so rewarding – and so challenging – is the difficulty of being part of a traditional…

Never Mind the Bollocks, Here's the Open Office
18 Nov 2009 | 7:38 pmEverybody's talking about the office suite for the next decade. Microsoft Office 2010 is in beta. Google is waging a vaporware offensive, trying to convince people that it is about to engage in some much needed alchemy with Google Docs. Meanwhile, Open Office just plugs along. Being just as free as Google Docs, and, at least, just about as good as the ever-bloating Microsoft Office suite. I'm all about free, and I live in the cloud. There are free and cloudy apps for just about everything. But the choices for word processing applications are slim, which is… -
Compute Easily and Cheaply With Cloudy, Free Software Alternatives
17 Nov 2009 | 10:22 pmMy computer was getting a little long in the tooth, so when Windows 7 was released, I decided to buy a new one. I also decided, following my earlier move to Google Apps, to create my application toolbox with as many cloud applications and free software alternatives as reasonably possible. Here's what I did, for those who want to simplify their computer toolbox and put some extra money in their pockets. The Computer I bought an HP Pavilion Elite e9280t. I've had good luck with HP computers, both laptops and desktops, so I decided to stay with what was working. Plus, it… -
The Face(book) is Familiar
17 Nov 2009 | 6:06 pmI've spent lots of blog space and podcast time pooping all over Facebook. Saying how it is for kids, that it's AOL 2.0, that it's the internet kiddie pool. I was right, and I was wrong. Mostly wrong. Facebook is all of those things, of course, but perhaps in an evolutionary- and not a pejorative- way. More than anything else, Facebook is like Brawndo: it's got what people crave. Over time I have mostly capitulated to Facebook, simply because it's the only path to a lot of people I want to interact with. I create almost all of my content out here on the big,… -

Google: Partially Cloudy by Design
11 Nov 2009 | 7:03 pmLarry Dignan at ZDNet says that Google's cloud storage price-break is a big missed opportunity, because Google "can't figure out a lightweight desktop client that would back up your entire computer." I suspect that Google could- and probably secretly has- done that. But by making the storage Gmail and Picasa only, Google stands to steal market share from its competitors. Market share that lands on Gmail and Picasa pages where ads can be displayed. No one makes money hosting files in the cloud for free or close-to-free. But force more of the herd to the application…

5-A-Day for Your Toddler
23 Jul 2009 | 8:31 amI am constantly searching for new ways to get my toddler to eat healthy food. We have all heard that making their food fun is important. If it doesn’t look exciting, chances are it won’t be exciting to your toddler. This week, as I was browsing through the fruit at Costco, I found the ultimate fun fruit – champagne grapes. These little grapes are so sweet and easy to eat. At less than $4.00 for a huge container, they are also a steal of a bargain. Worried about these little sweeties going bad before they disappear? This week was a great week for bargains in my household. Living in a… -

The Cost of Child Care
8 Apr 2009 | 8:09 pmToday I have been doing some research on the cost of child care in the United States. Many families assume that it is financially impossible for mom to stay at home with their children. Just by doing some basic calculations and subtracting monthly expenses from your partner’s salary actually gives you quite an inaccurate view of your situation. When you carefully evaluate your finances by creating a budget and calculating all expenses associated with child care, you may realize that the impossible is actually possible. The actual cost of child care is not an easy thing to find. It will… -
Once In a Lifetime
6 Apr 2009 | 7:19 pmUpon learning of my pregnancy I was instantly transformed from a working girl to working girl contemplating being a stay at home mom. For me, this didn’t take much thought. I always knew that raising my own children was very important to me, and my husband and I were determined to find a way to do it. Let me begin by saying that it has been the most rewarding thing I’ve ever done. There have been struggles; these struggles being no harder than anything I ever came upon in my career, just different. At this point there is no one that can convince me there is anything better than being…

Web Secret #76: Powermat
18 Nov 2009 | 5:57 amAt the end of a long day of blogging and other geekery, it's time to charge my iPhone. I head over to the kitchen, my family's version of NASA mission control. I am not alone. Other 21st century paraphernalia is already plugged into the Matrix, including:a Blackberry Curvea Nintendo DS a Motorola Rivaland two ancient LG phones of dubious provenance. There are power cords and chargers everywhere.I have a dream, a dream of a wireless world where I can just drop my iPhone onto a table, and it will charge itself... Wake up babe! My dream is a reality. All I have to do is shell out some cash and… -
Web Secret #75: Ning
11 Nov 2009 | 6:06 amWhat is Ning? No, it's not a 14th century Chinese dynasty, or a tai chi move, or a take out dish featuring tofu and bok choy.Ning is a FREE online platform (aka website) that enables people to create their own social networks. So what? Well if you have very specific interests and want to connect with a very specific group of people, you might want to create your own very specific social network. If Facebook is a Ford factory, Ning is a custom car kit.Still don't get it? Well I didn't until I was invited to join the Online Therapy Institute Social Network (OTI)created on the Ning platform. When… -
Web Secret #74: StopBADware
4 Nov 2009 | 5:07 am"Bad, bad, bad, bad software, you make me feel so mad..." With a nod to the 1985 Gloria Estefan hit - there is nothing that makes me angrier than downloading a program and being subjected to "BADware". What is BADware?BADware is software that fundamentally disregards a user’s choice regarding how his or her computer will be used. Common examples of badware include free screensavers that surreptitiously generate advertisements, malicious web browser toolbars that take your browser to different pages than the ones you expect, or keylogger programs that can transmit your personal data to… -
Web Secret #73: Social Media Is Not a Fad
28 Oct 2009 | 5:48 amI am always trying to succinctly explain to Baby Boomer non believers why social media is relevant to them. And then I Stumbled Upon Erik Qualman's brilliantly executed video "Statistics Show Social Media Is Bigger Than You Think" which deftly answers the question "Is Social Media a Fad or the biggest shift since the Industrial Revolution?" using statistics.I have pared down Qualman's 37 stats to just 10 of the most compelling:1. Years to Reach 50 millions Users:Radio (38 Years)TV (13 Years), Internet (4 Years) iPod (3 Years)Facebook added 100 million users in less than 9 monthsiPhone… -
Web Secret #72: Backblaze
21 Oct 2009 | 5:24 amAnytime a website can simultaneously entertain me, provide a useful service, and save me money, I am compelled to pay attention.Recently, I randomly landed on Backblaze.com, one of dozens of sites that offers online data backup. When Backblaze opens, the first thing that happens is that you are treated to a lifelike 5 second video of a young woman dousing a laptop with gasoline and then setting fire to it. That was so rewarding, I had to watch it a couple times before further exploring the site.Essentially, Backblaze offers:Online unlimited backup for only $5/month per computer for 50 years…

How much money do you make online?
20 Nov 2009 | 6:29 amThis is a little survey post! Since majority of my readers are those who are already making money online (or those who want to do so) from blogging or otherwise I thought of asking you this question. In fact this helps me to assess myself as to where I stand as an MMO blogger and helps all my wonderful readers out here as well. There are two parts to this survey and I request you to participate in both polls listed below. The first part is about how much you make and the second part is about the methods or instruments that you use to make that kind of online income. Poll 1: How much money do… -
When to Turn off comments on your WordPress Blog and How?
16 Nov 2009 | 7:50 amTurning off comments on your blog is not something that you do very often. However, there are situations where comments are taken out completely or disabled per post or even turned off after a certain period. This post describes the situations when you take out comments and how to turn it off. In a blog, the comments are turned off or avoided in the following scenarios. #1 Autopilot affiliate sales blogs Blogs that are meant to create autopilot income will typically have a handful of posts that are a bunch of landing pages themselves whose duty is to help convert the traffic. Bye bye Twitter!
13 Nov 2009 | 9:02 amIt has been exactly one year since I started using twitter. I must say that I did sign up with twitter purely on an experimental basis to see if it can result in any significant traffic or conversion. However, the following twitter related numbers during the past one year somehow prompted me to rethink about my decision. No. of tweets: 1159 or roughly 3 tweets per day No. of followers: 339 (Thank you all, but it’s still a mystery for me as I see 5-10 followers getting added everyday. Where are they all going?) No. of people that I follow: 172 90 (Reduced by 50% today, congratulations to you… -
Amazing Google Tools that you probably didn’t use yet
10 Nov 2009 | 10:13 amFor the layman, Google is only a Search Engine who also have a Web browser and a free email service (and of course it’s the Youtube and Picasa company). For bloggers and online entrepreneurs, it is an organization to help earn money online and market their products via tools such as AdSense and AdWords. And for the geeks it’s all about Android, Google code, Gears etc. However, Google is much more than that and it’s getting bigger and bigger day by day. Check out the following free applications and tools which is only a small subset of what Google Labs has today (Sorry for the… -

1 Oct 2009 | 6:56 amIts been so long, Darren acquired ProBlogger.com and we have been expecting some thing very useful from him. Finally he has decided to start with a paid forum. I am sure, he will have plans to expand it, in the future. Many people may think that paid forum is not the way to go, considering some other good quality forums already available for free. But Darren, is paying for the moderation and he also want to make sure that, the forum is difficult place for spammers! 5 Nov 2009 | 2:02 amIf you are still skeptic of Social Media, you need to do something about it! I am sold on the idea that Social Media is mainstream and there are probably a hundred reasons why I think so starting from Micheal Jackson and backwards. This video from YouTube tells you more about why Social Media is important. Social Media ia used by many in many different ways. Some use it for promoting their products, others use it to listen to their customers while others give away tips on using their products on the social media platforms. Here are a few ways I think you can use Social Media. 1. Listen… -

Excellent Domain Registration Service
5 Nov 2009 | 6:57 amI own upwards of 30 domains. I have switched domain registrars several times over the years, but have finally settled on 1&1 Domain Name Registration. I’m not going to make this a long post, but I just wanted to share this great service with you. Since I already have a hosting account, I don’t host with 1&1, but their domain registration service is fast, inexpensive and they offer free private registration. This is relatively rare for a domain registrar. Generally registrars take advantage of any extra fees they can charge. It is also extremely easy to complete a DNS… -

Wasps create Caterpillar Zombies
13 Oct 2009 | 6:45 amI’ve been hanging out with my favorite 13-year-old this weekend and it seems that much of our conversation has centered around zombies. We recently saw Zombieland (awesome!) and tonight we watched Day of the Dead (awesome -r!). Then he told me that his friend told him about zombie caterpillars that were being created by wasps. We were both skeptical, but Google quickly gave us this: Pretty creepy, huh? I know it really has nothing to do with internet marketing, but I thought that perhaps I could put a spin on it to make it fit. Then I decided that it didn’t matter if the video was…

WordPress Wins 2009 Overall Best Open Source CMS Award
19 Nov 2009 | 11:48 amI was first introduced to WordPress about 5-6 years and it was love at first sight. From the time I started using it, I’ve never looked back or thought about shifting to another blogging platform/software. Being an avid WordPress user and advocate, I was happy when I found out that WordPress was recently awarded the 2009 Overall Best Open Source CMS Award by the Open Source CMS Awards. 17 Nov 2009 | 9:00 pmEvery once in a while, things come up that totally mess up our schedule. Most of the time as a starting out blogger, or just a blogger with lazy tendencies, there is no backup. The situation I am talking about of course is rushing in posts at the last-minute. As you know first hand, keeping up with your post schedule isn’t easy. Google Magic and Dating Megan Fox
17 Nov 2009 | 9:15 amGoogle is the web’s most powerful player and the person at the party everyone wants to become friends with. If the web was a high school prom, Google would be the girl everyone tried to dance with. Too many people don’t understand enough about Google to ever really have a chance of success with it, just like the popular girl at the dance. You see Google is very elusive. Entire blogs, forums, and websites are dedicated to understanding how Google works and more importantly how to be successful using it. There are more rumors about Google then about Barack Obama’s… -

Are You Jumping on the WordPress Mage Bandwagon?
19 Nov 2009 | 8:01 amWow there is a brand new method of publishing new WordPress Blogs and even what they refer to as “Pimping” your older installs of WP Blogs that seems unbelievable! Here are some of the premises as I interpret the hype: One button publishing. Do your keyword research. Get a string of from hundreds to thousands of keywords in a few seconds, and then you push one button to publish each of those keywords as an individual Blog post article in mere seconds or a few minutes. Thousands of keyword rich articles that you can back date as many years as you wish and they all look… -
Free Contest – Win Prizes – No Purchase Necessary
8 Nov 2009 | 4:41 amHello everyone. Welcome to the first contest that I have ever run here on Linkmoney.org. This is very easy. There is no purchase necessary to win one of the prizes. I was going to run this contest to the end of the year but that would be in the Holiday season and too much to deal with. So we will run this contest for 30 days from today, December 8th. The goal here is to increase traffic which should help improve the Alexa score on Linkmoney. The other thing is that I lost all of my several years worth of RSS and Email subscribers when feedburner was sold to Google, so I would love to have a… -
I Want to Increase My Alexa Ranking
30 Oct 2009 | 11:01 amAlexa is owned by Amazon and they use a rating system that estimates all website traffic. When a site is brand spanking new it starts out with an Alexa rank of several million. In this ranking system the smaller the number that your website receives is better. Your site will not start to show up in the Alexa charts until your site is in the top 100,000. To tell the truth I never worried much about it and I never have worried much about the Google Page Rank score either. In GPR your site is rated as a number from 0 to 9, or possibly 10 not sure about that. Now lately I have had two… -
Is Google Sniper The Real Deal?
25 Oct 2009 | 4:55 amI asked myself the obvious, “Is Google Sniper the real deal”? If you are in the Internet Marketing business and trying to find the best ways to make some money online then you have no doubt tried many different systems. Some work really well, some are just plain old duds. So with full disclosure: There are affiliate advertisements for this product on this website. But in this case I am going to give you my own impressions and opinion of this product, Google Sniper. I am not being paid by George Brown or any other person or company to tell you this. I will however earn a commission… -
Do You Flog for Links?
5 Oct 2009 | 12:14 pmHere’s the way I see it. We all Blog, right? Well do you Flog for links? You’ve heard it all before, write good content and other authority sites will link to you. Bull shit! In your dreams they will. The following procedures are of course nothing that I would do but you might like to know about the possibility of Flogging. Some Bloggers set up multiple Blogs in every niche market that they intend to Blog in. Then after you have written several good posts on your primary niche marketing Blog, you can then start posting articles in the secondary Blogs, or as I like to call them Flogs, and…

Windstream to Acquire NuVox
3 Nov 2009 | 11:06 amWell another merger in telecom and it is actually the company I work for we will see how it goes. Everyone knows that with mergers and acquisitions comes layoffs. Due to overlapping departments and having to streamline to be cost effective. So as scary it may be during this time there is always opportunities in a ever changing business market. You won’t believe that you already have your own digital product in hand. You’d probably think that your own product has to be an ebook, a piece of software or some sort. That is normal. Though you can’t actually hold a digital product, the image of a book that appears on a website seems appealing and real enough to imagine that it’s a tangible, physical product – when an ebook is… -
