  • Have a 37 Minute Coffee Break with Me [Audio Interview]

    Darren Rowse
    9 Feb 2010 | 5:43 am
If you have a spare 37 minutes today to grab a coffee with me (or at least are doing something that will allow you to listen to something for 37 minutes in the background) check out this interview I did with Robb Sutton late last week. Robb’s also transcribed it for those who prefer to read. In the interview Rob asks me about a whole range of stuff including: my background in blogging my philosophy on lots of sites vs focusing upon a single (or just a few) sites the process of going full time (and my wife’s six month ultimatum) my shift in focus to e-books and membership sites a…
  • What Is Your Blogging Goal for February?

    Darren Rowse
    8 Feb 2010 | 6:22 am
A few days back I asked readers a question: What Have You Been Putting Off and What’s Holding You Back? Some of the responses to the question in comments (and via email and Twitter) revealed a lot of bloggers really wanting to step things up and get what they’ve been putting off done. So – lets set some goals – what do you want to achieve by the end of February? I’m not going to be calling you up to check up to see if you’re meeting your goals – but hopefully in putting them down publicly you’ll find yourself a little more spurred on to reach…
  • 9 Tricks I Used To Triple My AdSense Earnings In 30 Days

    Daniel Scocco
    7 Feb 2010 | 6:34 am
Guest post by Daniel Scocco from Daily Blog Tips. I have been using Google AdSense to monetize my blogs and websites for as long as I remember. In fact it was the first method I ever tried (I made a whooping $15 on my first month… back in 2005). Over the years I migrated to other methods (e.g., direct sponsors and affiliate marketing), which made AdSense become merely an inventory filler. I was still making around $1,000 monthly from it, but whenever I could I would use other methods over it. Then some months ago I started noticing an upward trend on the CPC of my sites, and I figured that…
  • How I Got Some Paying Sponsors Without Really Meaning To

    Darren Rowse
    6 Feb 2010 | 6:21 am
A guest post by Josh Hanagarne. World’s Strongest Librarian was about four months old when I got interested in sponsors. I’d read the articles about how to do it, and none of them sounded that plausible for me and my situation. For one, my traffic wasn’t impressive, certainly not to the point where sponsors were approaching me. And, while my blog has become slightly more focused in its first ten months, it wasn’t targeted at any group of readers in particular, so I wasn’t sure how confident niche advertisers would be. It’s a little more focused now, but I can’t really think of a…
  • 29 Debates Bloggers Have about Blogging

    Darren Rowse
    5 Feb 2010 | 6:13 am
Do you want a formula to guarantee the success of your blog? Yesterday I was interviewed by a journalist about blogging and half way though the interview he asked me what the formula for successful blogging was. His question was innocent enough and asked without agenda but as I pondered it and pondered the many successful blogs that we see in our medium it became very clear to me that while it might be simpler to have a formula to follow to make our blogs succeed that there are many many different approaches to success in this field. One of the things that I love about blogging is that there…

    9 Feb 2010 | 4:53 am
A couple months ago we were getting about 10-20 solicitations a day from people wanting us to talk about their products… or their product for sale… or whatever. It seemed logical to give these people an outlet where they could get exposure on ShoeMoney.com & we could raise a decent amount for charity. So we started the ShoeMoney Marketplace. I have been pretty surprised by the response. We have been getting an average of about 15 listings a week or so. People had some requests… They were concerned we were not using SSL for the CC transactions… they wanted to be…

IF you are not on the Video Boss list then you need to get on it now. Andy just released another amazing video in the Video Boss series. I just finished it. Its unbelievable. Our team watched the first video the other day and we were wondering how exactly Andy records his slides… We assumed it was with some software like screen flow or camtasia… but no… its much easier then that. Its so enlightening to watch someone do an exact step by step complete walk through on making video’s that drastically increase conversions. Everything from what camera to use, to where to get…

I am pumped for tonights UFC card. While its not a huge main card title fight there are tons of great match ups on the card. I am a pretty hardcore mixed martial arts fan and have been watching events for the last 10 years. Randy Couture Vs Mark Coleman I remember when Randy Couture came into the sport and people were saying he was too old.. Now at 46 years old he is still one of the best fighters in the world. But he has essentially lost his last 3 fights (depending if you think he beat Vera or not). Tonight Randy is fighting Marc Coleman whois pretty close in age. Both are UFC Hall Of…

    Nathan Hangen
    8 Feb 2010 | 7:49 am
I’ve found it just doesn’t pay to crow too much about what I’ve accomplished. Sure, I celebrate when things go well. But I’ve found that talking too much about my achievements leads not only to criticism, but to disappointment. There’s always going to be someone who’s done more or worked harder. And until they carve my name into the side of the moon, I see no reason in puffing myself up. The minute you get a big head is the same minute that reality smacks you and you realize that you aren’t as cool as you think you are. So self-adulation is something I try to stay…
  • Five Areas to Focus On for Effective SEO Copywriting

    Brian Clark
    5 Feb 2010 | 8:51 am
When I first started Copyblogger in 2006, I was almost militantly against on-page search optimization. Seems strange, since I’d been a successful student of SEO since 2000. It was because I saw all these people fretting over keywords like it’s 1999, and yet they had no links. Their content was weak. Their sites weren’t trusted. You can’t optimize something that’s dead in the water. So my initial goal was to get people to focus on content that attracted attention and links first. Only then do you have something you can make better (that’s what optimize means, naturally). Fours…
  • Landing Page Makeovers 2007-2009: Where Are They Now?

    Roberta Rosenberg
    4 Feb 2010 | 6:46 am
This is another addition to our ongoing series of tutorials and case studies on landing pages that work. It occurred to me late last year, as I was readying yet another Landing Page Makeover, that the end of one year and the beginning of the next was a good time to do a “Where are they now?” post. So first things first, I went back and contacted all makeover participants from the very beginning of the series. Of the more than 20 contacted, I learned that one is no longer in business, MagicPumpkinArt.com (Makeover #14) and two are in the midst of developing new products or revising…
  • Does SEO Copywriting Still Matter?

    Brian Clark
    3 Feb 2010 | 8:28 am
If there’s any one thing that can be said about SEO with certainty, it’s that it manages to cause a lot of confusion. For example, it seems like many people’s idea of SEO was formed 10 years ago, and hasn’t bothered to change with the times. Even an online veteran like Robert Scoble is completely clueless about modern best practices for search engine optimization. So, before we go any further, let me answer the question posed by the headline . . . Yes, SEO copywriting still matters. Here’s why. Search is still the biggest game in town “Pick your survey, search remains one of the…

  • How To Do Paid Social Media Marketing Right

    Guest Blogger
    8 Feb 2010 | 3:20 pm
An increasing number of social media websites are finding that the only real way to structure advertisements so that they have any significant ROI for sponsors is to integrate them into the social nature of the website itself. StumbleUpon did this through the use of “paid stumbles” where they charged $.05 a visitor from the StumbleUpon toolbar and Digg rolled out a similar program soon after showcasing “sponsored stories” amongst the other submissions on the home page. If you are going to pay to advertise on social media websites, this is the way it is to be done. This is the only way…

The flat-six engine has an increase in power over the 911 Turbo by 30 to 530 hp and maximum torque is a most impressive 516 lb-ft. As luck with have it, I just happened to have my Macbook with me and decided to give a little demo on how to register a domain name, set up a new WordPress blog and have it all live on the Internet in 15 minutes. Twelve year old Ifan Yang is the son of one of the church members. I decided to use him for the demo. The goal was to show everyone how easy it was to get a blog up and running. I have seen DirectCPV advertising on this blog for awhile, and decided I would try them out. Overall I oversee thousands of dollars per month spent on CPV through my accounts and those I manage, but really Media Traffic is the primary company used as they seem to be the most stable and well priced. I decided to give DirectCPV a run for their money, so I dropped $100 into my campaign (their minimum deposit), and forgot to enter my $30 coupon code (JCH30) to give my total $130. This was stupid on my part so I kindly sent them a support request asking if they could add the coupon to my account,…

    Thomas McMahon
    1 Feb 2010 | 7:45 am
One of the biggest features that Blogger.com had over other free blogging sites is the ability to publish files to a website via FTP. This allowed site owners to have a blog in a directory on their site without having to install and maintain software on their web server. Unfortunately, on March 26th, Blogger.com is shutting down their FTP functionality. Blogger claims that only .5% of their users use this feature and that it’s a big strain on their engineering staff to keep it working like it should. So they are shutting it down. So now what? Are you a part of that .5%? Believe it or…
  • Are Trackbacks & Pingbacks Dead?

    Thomas McMahon
    20 Jan 2010 | 2:15 pm
The idea of trackbacks and pingbacks are great. It’s a way of getting notified when someone else posts about you on their blog. However, spammers have taken over and it makes you wonder if there is any value in trackbacks anymore. My guess is that most bloggers will say that the value is little to none. The number of spammy trackbacks are overwhelming at times and, even if you do have a good spam plugin protecting you, the ones that get through are not quality. The chances that a good trackback comes into your site is rare, but when it does, it is great to see. The idea of trackbacks is…

I was reminded on Twitter by a quote how life coaches and gurus often talk about how sports people visualize victory. They say if you use positive visualization, then your outcome will improve. Then there are the people who tell you that if you use the “Law of Attraction”, that is if you ask the universe for something, and you believe, then what you ask for will come to you. The problem is, for most people, experience does not match what they are taught. And that sucks. In the headline I make a promise that you can make positive thinking work. How? Let’s look at this…

I will answer the latter question today, and the other one will be covered next Friday. As…

It’s harder than ever to spend even a few minutes online these days without bumping into some get-rich-quick story or advertisement, whether it’s news about Ponzi schemes netting crooked financiers billions of dollars or annoying Google sidebar paid ads promising you that you’ll make $7,287,964/hour working from home, stuffing envelopes. The siren’s call of easy money is a tempting one, indeed, and it’s even trickling down to the world of blogging, with…

    5 Feb 2010 | 5:00 am
Don't ignore digital assets in your optimization efforts Don’t fight it: Blended search results, and hence digital asset optimization, are here (at least for now). Text content may be your SEO poster child, but with images, video and audio content often appearing in standard search results, digital assets can no longer be treated as the ugly stepsister in the online marketing family. Many companies produce a variety of content and media that never make it to the public web. To this point, the majority of marketers have either overlooked or ignored optimization of non-text digital…

Can you believe that it’s already 2010? I’ve been involved with Internet marketing and SEO for over 7 years now and each year has always been more exciting than the previous one. 2010 is looking to be no different. There are so many opportunities online to make money and make a difference. If you ever wanted to get started in this space, now’s the time. I’m the #61 most influential online marketer of 2009. Seriously. Are you surprised? I know I was when I first saw the list a few days ago. While I’m flattered and honored to be included, a part of me just doesn’t feel right. How am I ranked higher than the very SEO superstars that I look up to? This includes guys like Patrick Altoft, Jordan Kasteler, Eric Ward, and Michael Gray (who didn’t even make the list). Furthermore, to say that I’m more influential than top bloggers like John Chow, Lisa Barone, and Leo Babauta is just insulting – even to me. Khalid…

Squeeze pages are important – no doubt about it. If you have a free offer that you’re giving away in exchange for user information (name and email address), you should be utilizing a squeeze page. If not, you’re probably leaving a lot of leads on the table and limiting your email list building potential. I’ve written before about the 7 components of killer squeeze pages and you should look to incorporate all of them if possible. But what if you’re not technically savvy or would rather rely on a system to do all of the heavy lifting for you? After all, tweaking…

They come in short spurts and are unannounced; even I am unaware they are about to occur. I’m speaking of blogging blackouts, periods of time where some unknown force keeps me from blogging. Has is it ever happened to you? These stretches of time find me allergic to the keyboard. I suddenly don’t have much to say, and that my (temporary) preference for real-life interaction outweighs the desire to write. If might be my post-Super Bowl hangover, but I think these periods are happening with greater frequency, and I’m not sure what to make of it. I can only compare it to an old…

It’s no secret that controversial posts that take an unabashed stance on a hot-button issue generate serious traffic. If we’re going to be completely honest, sometimes being a pr*ck, is the best thing you can do for your blog. Since nice guys finish last, here are two ideas on how you can blog out of character. Emailing sites asking for rate cards. Waiting for the sites to actually respond to your inquires. Haggling over rates and prices, trying to get a better deal. Waiting for package information. Calculation…

  • 8 Reasons You Should be Advertising on Blogs

    29 Sep 2009 | 6:00 am
8 ) Blogs are SUPER Viral: Traffic on blogs is super volatile and can go 5 fold over night with a really viral blog post, and if you are paying a flat monthly rate for your ad, you get tonnes of extra exposure for no extra money. 7) Good bang for your Buck: Most bloggers are part time and or just do it for a hobby, so any income is usually good income. You can get on some great blogs for as low as $50 or $100 a month. Try getting on Yahoo or MSN for $100. See if they return your email 6) Easy to get Started: Most medium sized blogs now have an ‘Advertise with Us’ section with simple…

  • Passion vs. Demand When Choosing A Blog Topic

    Steven-Sanders
    14 Jan 2010 | 10:00 pm
There are literally 2-3 new blogs being created every second. Everywhere you turn you are hearing about a blog, whether it’s a personal blog, a group blog, or a business blog. So why, if there are so many blogs on the internet, do we only hear about a small group of them being very succesful? Because most bloggers who are interested in being successful or making a ton of money with their blogs, aren’t doing it right. Reading Between The Lines Many of those blogger’s who are successful are giving everyone the same answer when asked what is the best topic to blog about.  I…

Twitter has become the new thing.  Before that, Facebook, and even before that, Myspace. And those 3 along with many other social media websites are still going strong and being used more and more as places to network and build brand awareness. All of these social media spaces have two things in common: They are being used to leverage awareness of a brand or product. They are most often being used in the wrong way. The Wrong Way To Use Social Media With the overwhelming growth of social media, major corporations like McDonald’s, BestBuy, and Dell are creating accounts to interface with…

2009 was one hell of a year.  Beginning with the Ice Storm we’ll never forget, which took me out of blogging for over a month, the loss of my job in March, which took me out of blogging for a month or so, the BlogHer conference in Chicago, which revitalized my blogging, IzeaFest in sunny Orlando Florida, with some of the greatest people on earth, which made me realize just how much I love blogging, my appearance on the Doterati “Blog Marketing Demystified” panel, of which I did really well, and the latest trouble my family and I have been facing up until just a week or so…
  • 5 Tips To Keep You From Losing Control Of Your Blog

    Steven-Sanders
    11 Jan 2010 | 11:42 am
You can probably remember back to when you started blogging.  The excitement you felt at getting your thoughts out on your own website, or the nervousness of beginning a long journey to making money from your content. While that excitement is great, and you hope it lasts the rest of your life, you don’t want to let it cause you to lose control of your blog, especially if you are interested in running it as a business. Losing control can be one of the most dangerous things you encounter when blogging, and if you’re not careful, you lose control without even realizing it. Here are…

I was lucky enough to get an invitation to Google Wave from a friend of mine, and in the last couple of days, I’ve been exploring the features it contains. While I’m not extremely impressed with it yet, I can foresee some big uses for Google Wave coming about. 1. Forum Integration With Google Wave’s ability to imbed Waves into existing websites and allow for comments within each embedded wave, this could be a very awesome change for forums. Currently, in order to reply to a thread in a forum, you have to register for that forum, type your reply then wait for the page to…

  • How to Find Guest Post Opportunities For Your Blog

    3 Feb 2010 | 5:41 pm
Guest posting is a great way to increase traffic, network with other bloggers, and build links. But how do you know which blogs are good guest post opportunities? In the last couple of weeks, I’ve been doing a lot of guest posting for various blogs so I thought I’d share what I learned from my experience. Check Blogs For Previous Guest Posts The strategy that worked the best was checking blogs to see if they published guest posts previously. If a blog had published them in the past, then there was a really good chance they would publish my guest post. You can search for…
  • 3 Reasons Bloggers Should Read Books

    27 Jan 2010 | 9:11 pm
Reading a book seems very low tech in this current digital age. But don’t underestimate the words on a physical page. While many bloggers do their reading online, you can gain an advantage by shutting off the computer and reading a book offline. Here are three reasons to head over to your local bookstore. 1. To Improve Credibility Books are still perceived as trusted sources of authority. If you become well read that you quote books often, your credibility will increase. I felt that Brian Clark of Copyblogger knew what he was talking about because he quoted the classic advertising and…
  • 2010 Reminder: Test the Monetization of Your Blog

    20 Jan 2010 | 7:30 pm
Monetization can get lost in all the blogging activities we have to juggle. Let’s face it, there’s a lot that goes into blogging. Content, marketing, and building relationships take up a lot of our time and it can be easy to forget about monetization. But if you want to make money with your blog, you can’t ignore, well, the making money part I believe that content and traffic comes first, but after you generate a healthy content and traffic base, there comes a time when you must focus on optimizing your monetization. Otherwise, you’ll leave a lot of money on the table.
  • How to Stop Being Boring (and Why You Probably Are)

    13 Jan 2010 | 3:41 pm
I’m boring and you’re probably boring too. I just listened to this interview with Seth Godin. He gives really good advice about how to successfully run a business. You should definitely listen to the whole thing if you want to make more money with your blog. One of the things Seth said that struck me is found at the 38:30 mark. He said, “If people aren’t talking about you, they’re not talking about you for a reason. And the reason isn’t that they dislike you. They’re not talking about you because you’re boring.” These are harsh words, but…
  • 4 Reasons Why I’m Loving iStockphoto.com

    6 Jan 2010 | 4:40 pm
In last 30 days, I’ve been using the images from the stock photography site iStockphoto and it’s been a great experience. It all started with a client who need content for a new site. I created a bunch of text pages for them, but then they said they wanted images on each of the pages. I usually get my pictures from Flickr and Stock.XCHNG but I couldn’t find relevant images for many of the pages. The client is in the business-to-business marketing niche, which doesn’t lend itself well to pictures – at least not at first glance. So, I looked for another picture…

    It's Not a Lecture
  • The Contributions Cloud

    David
    5 Feb 2010 | 8:09 am
It's well established I have a thing for text clouds (and wordle) - particularly in a political context. Cloud generators are neat tools - but if you know how to apply those tools you can generate some interesting questions. I first learned about the idea on Americablog, when I saw a cloud of a State Of the Union Address. Since then I've used cloud generators to compare speeches between different political figures, and even to compare groups of bloggers in different online communities. But what if you could use a cloud generator to measure influence - not only in a specific conversation, but…

This has also been done before in other countries, but I have to say President Obama deserves credit for this and I hope the White House does it more. One of the biggest complaints people have about their government these days is that government is too cloistered; not transparent enough and simply not listening to people. This is a step in the right direction - a small step, but a positive one.
  • Question Time: It Wasn't a Lecture

    David
    30 Jan 2010 | 11:14 am
From the victory lap liberal bloggers have been taking Friday and into the weekend, you'd think President Obama smite the House Republican caucus with a mighty staff, parted the Red Sea, and and set his people free or something.I'm really pleased with how Friday's meeting between the President and the House GOP went, broadcast live on all the major cable news networks - but really not because of some perceived political outcome. I'm pleased because this represents a first of sorts in our political discourse - A televised discussion between opposing political parties, without the rigid…
  • Why Journalism is Dying, part 84,037

    David
    29 Jan 2010 | 8:18 am
Of course, new technology has allowed "citizen journalists" to publish their own work, providing more competition for traditional journalists. And this technology allows people to customize the news they receive more than ever before - so what was once the half-hour newscast everyone was forced to watch is now the dim sum menu from which anyone can choose. But a big part of it - much more than many journalists want to accept - is just how canned and over-simplified the news is these days. I've spent some time talking with scientists and health care providers lately, people who have fairly…

OK, here's the speech and the speech cloud, thanks to Wordle...My reaction is really the result of something my wife said. President Obama was talking to the people in the room, not the people beyond it.The President was a little chippier than I thought he'd be, with a bit more tough-guy, " I won't accept second place" rhetoric, trying to assert the value of the stimulus package and lecturing Congress:So no, I will not give up on changing the tone of our politics. I know it's an election year. And after last week, it is clear that campaign fever has come even earlier than usual. But we still…

I’ve been blogging for seven years. Over that time I have talked with many people about blogging. When I talk to people who are even slightly interested in blogging for themselves I inevitably run into the same argument. “But, I have nothing to write about.” I personally think that is a terrible argument. Everyone has something that they are truly passionate about and could talk for days about that subject. To prove that you can blog about anything and still provide value I submit this example of a perfectly good blog post on the topic of saving money. My wife and I started…

If you’re working on a group/team project and do not work together in the same location, that can make things even more difficult. If you get distracted easily, it’s also common to waste a lot of time doing non-important things (like playing around on Facebook or Twitter), and before you know it a few hours have flown by. 4 Feb 2010 | 1:36 pm
Earlier this week, I decided that I needed to put my main site on a diet. Simply put, the loading time of the site was nowhere near my personal standard and, though no one had complained about the time it took to load, I wasn’t pleased with the numbers I was seeing and even Google Webmaster Tools was providing less-than-subtle hints I needed to improve. So I set my mind to do just that. I took an afternoon to research the problem and try to devise a solution. Fortunately, I didn’t need the entire time or even a quarter of it. In fact, after about 30 minutes of research and just…

    Dee Barizo
    7 Feb 2010 | 4:00 am
From the early days of the blogosphere, savvy bloggers realized they could get traffic and links by offering free posts to other bloggers. The bloggers receiving the posts were happy to get free content. It was a classic win-win situation. This strategy of guest posting is not only effective for SEO and referral traffic, but it also builds your reputation, brand, and credibility. If you want to have a successful guest posting campaign, consider these 3 rules. 1. Relevance Your post should fit the overall flow of the blog. So, I think I finally discovered the cause of global warming. No, for reals. From what I can tell, miss Mother Nature started using Google Calculator in helping her figure out what kind of weather she should serve up to us. Now, if she were trying to bake a cake, or perhaps get driving directions, I am sure Google would have worked just fine. But for doing math involving temperatures…? Not so much. I was playing around with the functions on Google Calculator last week, when I noticed some of the calculations weren’t quite right. Maybe Michael Bolton from Office Space was involved…
  • Why The Renewed Interest In The Linkscape Scams And Deception..?

    Michael VanDeMar
    22 Jan 2010 | 2:15 pm
Yesterday a friend of mine, Sebastian, wrote a post titled, “How do Majestic and LinkScape get their raw data?“. Basically it is a renewed rant about SEOmoz and their deceptions surrounding the Linkscape product that they launched back in October 2008, a little over 15 months ago. The controversy is based around the fact that moz basically lied about how it was exactly they were obtaining their data, which in part was probably motivated by wanting to make themselves look like they were more technically capable than they actually are. Now, I covered this back when the launch…

I don’t normally get all worked up and sarcastic about research. In fact, I love reading about real, truly beneficial scientific research. So while I appreciate the whole scientific process, sometimes I just have to say, “Well, Duh!” I suppose it’s important to test theories just to be SURE that a hypothesis is correct, but really, was it necessary to test the hypothesis that a video game that requires physical action – such as Nintendo’s Wii Boxing – would actually burn more calories in kids than watching TV would? Well, apparently someone felt the…

It was an interesting enough story, but what caught my eye were the two opening sentences: Be cautious if you plan to Bing Jessica Biel or Google Brad Pitt. A new report says you might get a virus. Now, while Microsoft may be hoping that people will associate the name of their revamped search engine, Bing, with “the ringing of a bell that signals the ‘aha’ moment…

It’s time for another experiment here at The Keyword Academy. We love doing experiments – they help us to open our minds to new possibilities and they push us to make progress. If you missed our last few experiments, you can find them here: Make Money Online With 100 Blog Posts In 30 Days Make Money With 100 Hubs In 30 Days This experiment should be an interesting one. Here are the details: I’m going to pick 30 URLs that currently get little or no traffic Each day I will focus my efforts on one URL and build five links to that URL (this will obviously give me 150 new links…
  • Blogs vs. Supersites

    15 Jan 2010 | 9:22 am
Technical Difficulty The difficulty of setting up and running these types of sites is almost identical. I would recommend using WordPress as your platform either way and as far as structure goes, there is little difference between these approaches. Pre-profit Workload Either approach will require significant work before profits come. I would argue that most bloggers will have to work a lot more to become profitable since most bloggers don’t have an effective plan of attack. However, that doesn’t mean that blogging has to require more work before profitability. People who…
  • Blogging Is NOT Passive Income

    14 Jan 2010 | 1:44 pm
In the last few weeks, I’ve been giving a lot of thought to the different types of sites I’ve used in the last few years to produce income. I would classify them into three different categories: Niche sites Supersites Blogs Each of the three is entirely different but each can be used to make money online. If you listen to the blogging ‘gurus’, they will tell you that blogging is an awesome way to create passive income. That belief is BULL. The whole point of a blog is the expectation that the blogger will be publishing additional content. You need your readers to…

  • The Super Bowl Gets a Twitter Hashtag

    2 Feb 2010 | 7:00 pm
Super Bowl XLIV now has its own official Twitter hashtag, #SB44. The NFL has set up a webpage that aggregates tweets and Flickr photos tagged with #SB44. The site notes that the content submitted by Twitter and Flickr users for the application is not edited, fact-checked or screened by the NFL before it is posted. Expect the pace of the #SB44 tweets to pick up as gameday nears. The NFL also has a Twitter account, @nfl. (via The Social) Permalink | Recent Headlines | Plurk | Twitter | WWFeeds.com

"We're rolling out local trends to 1 percent of users today, but we'll share more information when it reaches a larger audience hopefully sometime next week. We'll keep you posted when that happens." Twitter trends have been a feature that is unique to Twitter. Twitter is able to offer the feature which provides a real-time look at what is going on in the world. • Vevo Quickly Dominates Online Music Videos

    21 Jan 2010 | 3:00 pm
VentureBeat reports that Vevo generated 35 million unique visitors and a staggering 13 billion video views in December. The easiest way to understand VEVO is that it is to music videos what Hulu is to TV shows: a corporate (in this case record labels) founded, ad-supported way to aggregate and serve up videos on the Web. Instead of having to wade through all the user-made junk on YouTube to find the real, high-grade and high-quality music videos, VEVO's channel features only label or artist-produced videos, with great sound and video quality (though not HD yet). Vevo really does appear to…

  • Where Is The Line Drawn?

    Jeff Chandler
    8 Feb 2010 | 11:07 am
Cory Miller who is one of the guys behind iThemes.com has published a long but excellent piece regarding his thoughts on why there needs to be a commercial WordPress plugin market. Honestly, I think Cory’s post has been the best on the subject and I don’t disagree with much of what he said. In terms of supporting the commercial interest of plugin authors from the plugin repository, there are a lot of questions that need to be answered. We already know that theme authors who sell their themes under the GPL license have been rewarded via a commercial themes page on WordPress.org.

Most of you have heard by now of the departure of Lester Chan from WordPress plugin development. While he will continue to update his plugins as needed, all support will be terminated. As a plugin author myself, I’m not surprised by this news. With the world economy still in the pits, more plugin authors are feeling the crunch. While they would like to release free plugins for all, at the end of the day, there are bills to pay and mouths to feed. • Why Bloggers Matter to the Publishing Industry

    Charles
    29 Jan 2010 | 5:18 pm
What makes a blogger?A penchant for the rant? A crowd hustler with sticky offers? A spirited journalist, an observer of life, a thought leader? And what about the rest of us, scratching hard to make (not even a) living? Is it all for nothing or is there a future for us?The answer is absolutely. The titanic publishing industry is mobilizing, and we need to upgrade our strategy. The Myth of Make Money OnlineFor the obscure blogger aspiring to the privy rank of ‘problogger,’ chances for commercial success are razor slim if they follow most of the “blogging for bloggers”…

In 2009, did you spend a little too much time on Facebook and Twitter? A little too much time talking about Facebook and Twitter? In web marketing, you either monetize or you don’t.It’s dramatic when you consider the extremes between the two camps:Some one-trick ponies monetizers are simply after your money and will stop at nothing to sell you out for their personal gain. They offer zero value, have no dignity and are largely anonymous. The “purists” of the web can’t cross the line from free expression to market value. I like to solve problems. At this point in my life, I’m focused on solving the fundamental problems of Web design and development through my business, DIYthemes, and my software, Thesis. One of the most compelling things I’ve learned in the past year, however, is that it’s not good enough to crank out “sufficient” solutions to problems. Truly sustainable answers require a style of thinking that involves patience, perspective, skill, testing, and unbiased criticism. Additionally, it’s crucial to realize that the best solutions we can generate should be…

  • Money or Efficiency? Know Where to Place Your Focus

    Chris Pearson
    23 Oct 2009 | 11:06 am
Somehow, society has been perverted to the point that we think crap can be turned to gold, so long as it makes money. Worse, the venture capital and corporate acquisition culture has brainwashed us all into thinking that in the end, the payoff justifies the means. That’s all bullshit, people. There are no substitutes for efficiency and sustainability, and nature proves this time and time again. For some reason, humanity continually repeats its mistakes of the past by going against the rules of nature, but in the end, these rules always prevail.Better to know the truth and to act on it…

Everything you do can (and should!) be viewed as an extension of nature. Whether you’re hacking your way around a golf course, running a business, or trying to figure out who to follow on Twitter, you’ll get the best results if you always strive to operate efficiently. You see, nature has done us an incredible favor by literally showing us the blueprint for success. You want to win? Be efficient.

    25 Sep 2009 | 8:25 am
Aneesh of Blogger Widgets has developed a new "Related Posts" script for Blogger which displays thumbnails of images in addition to linked post titles: In appearance, this Blogger "add-on" is similar to the LinkWithin script. Each section is highlighted in a complementary colour when the mouse hovers over it, and the entire section is clickable, leading to the URL of the "related post" displayed. Unlike the LinkWithin script, this add-on links directly to the post page it references, and relies on Blogger's label feeds to display posts of true relevance to the post on which it appears.

Authenticated pages with at least 10,000 fans will now feature two new metrics under status updates: Raw Impressions and Feedback Rate. But what do they mean? Raw Impressions indicate the number of times a post has “rendered.” In other words, every time the post is displayed on the page’s wall, in a fan’s live or news feed, or in a Facebook widget, it counts as an impression. Feedback Rate calculates the number of comments and likes received on…

  • The Lazy Woman’s Guide to Posts

    Catherine Caine
    9 Feb 2010 | 5:00 am
I have a confession to make: I’m incredibly lazy. If you follow me around the intertubes this may surprise you: I post daily on my website, contribute robustly on three forums, and twitter all the live long day. So how do I do it? My key to action: no-one’s too lazy to do something fun. So how do you make writing posts fun? Write on a topic you’re passionate about Review a product you love Interview someone cool Run an experiment Answer a question from a commenter you like Make the abstract into concrete (I once explained how domain names work with hand puppets.) MySpace saw a 40% decline in boomers during the same period, to 9.7 million, and Twitter visitors increased 714%, to 4.2 million. LinkedIn, a business site that has seen traffic rise during the economic recession, ranked third among boomer networkers at 6.8 million. Exclusive for subscribers! • War of the Words: The Ethics of Ghost Blogging

    Jenni Buchanan
    2 Feb 2010 | 9:27 am
When Grant asked a week ago if I would write a post about the pros and cons of legal ghost blogging the prospect seemed a lot simpler than it does today. With heated discussions about the ethics of ghost blogging currently taking place on other blogs right now, the topic now seems heavy with significance.  In actuality the ethics of ghost blogging has always been heavy with significance, and always will be; this is because “the ethics of ghost blogging” is not just about ghost blogging—and not just about blogging—but about ethics in general.  It is also about the wider issue of the…
  • How to stop feeling like a small fish

    Mariam Cisse
    1 Feb 2010 | 7:07 am
Guest post from Mariam Cisse: When I started blogging a few months ago, I was idealizing all the “big fishes” like Grant, Darren, Yaro or John. I wanted to become one of them, too. That’s what probably the most bloggers have in mind, when they start a blog. By being hypnotized by their success – which was my dream – I began to blog about the same things they were blogging about. So I probably had an ordinary “me too” blog. Fact is that I had no idea of what I was talking about. Fact is that as a few days had passed, I realized that I was only a small fish in the big…
  • Five Ways to Recycle Your Old Blog Content

    Grant Griffiths
    30 Jan 2010 | 6:00 am
Some bloggers say the average lifespan of a blog post is 90 days. I disagree. I see the average lifespan of a blog post to be no more then 30 days. Usually, once the post is off the “front page” of your blog and buried in the archives, it stays there. What we have to do as bloggers is find a way to bring these post to the attention of our readers and potential readers. This is also why we have to write on a regular basis “evergreen” content or “pillar” content. Content which is just so damn good people keep reading it. We also need to take steps to make…

  • Programmatically Creating Posts in WordPress

    Matt
    9 Feb 2010 | 3:24 am
WordPress has a convenient function that can create a new post: wp_insert_post(). Suppose that you wanted to create a plugin to automatically create weekly roundups of your social media activity. You could gather your Delicious bookmarks, Twitter posts, etc. with SimpleXML, mash the data up into a coherent post, then publish the post. The function syntax is along these lines: global $user_ID; $new_post = array( 'post_title' => 'My New Post', 'post_content' => 'Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet...', 'post_status' => 'publish', 'post_date' => date('Y-m-d H:i:s'), 'post_author' =>…
  • What’s the Status on Tweetie 2 for Mac?

    Matt
    8 Feb 2010 | 3:56 am
Tweetie for Mac is the best desktop Twitter client I have found. I really like it, and the interface has streamlined the Twitter experience for me. Unfortunately, it’s long due for an update. Twitter, as I’m sure you remember, released their “Project Retweet” feature several months ago. This has caused some problems for me. I now see a small fraction of retweets from people I follow, since most of them use the “official” retweeting method, and I can’t create the newfangled retweets myself, either. It’s frustrating, especially since I can do both…

  • Notify 2: Better Email Notifications for Webmail Users

    Matt
    5 Feb 2010 | 3:29 am
Until recently I used Google Notifier to monitor my primary Google Apps inbox for new messages, and I used Apple’s Mail application to check my other accounts. Then I found Notify 2, a neat little Mac application that works even better. Notify sits in your menu bar, up by the clock, and monitors multiple email accounts. It will check GMail, Google Apps, MobileMe, Rackspace, and generic IMAP boxes. When new messages come in, the number on the badge updates, and it can optionally make sounds or show Growl notifications. If the ability to monitor multiple accounts isn’t enough for…
  • Blogger to End FTP Publishing Support

    Matt
    4 Feb 2010 | 3:12 am
Blogger has announced that they will be discontinuing support for FTP publishing of their users’ blogs. They say that a mere 0.5% of Blogger users opt to have the static HTML files hosted on their own servers, as opposed to the Blog*Spot servers. The costs outweigh the return, and developer team wants to drop the legacy feature so they can move on to a more modern infrastructure, unhampered by a feature used primarily by the earliest Blogger sites. Three years ago we launched Custom Domains to give users the simplicity of Blogger, the scalability of Google hosting, and the flexibility…

    7 Feb 2010 | 2:16 am
Many of you know CommentLuv is my all time favorite plugin. With CommentLuv a blogger gets to let those who comment share a link back to their site which often results in more traffic for both bloggers. It’s a great reward for those who take the time to comment on our blogs; a way to thank others for sharing their thoughts. CommentLuv definitely spreads the love. Today’s Lesson You may have noticed when a blog has CommentLuv enabled, at the end of the link to your blog post is a small red heart. By hovering over the heart with your cursor, it can tell more about you, your blog,…

Last night when I was visiting blogs I landed on a beautiful post written by Jodi at Joy Discovered. In the post “Great Expectations”, Jodi shares how we often live our lives by the expectations of others and in the process, forget to live for our authentic self. I don’t want to give “it” away, but will say, the post is well worth the read. It was how Jodi started her post which inspired this one. Today’s Lesson Jodi opened her post by sharing how Elizabeth Gilbert’s book, Committed came to be. …Gilbert describes how it was difficult to write…
  • Unveiling The Results Of My Facelift

    Barbara Swafford
    31 Jan 2010 | 1:35 pm
Many people go under the knife to take years off of their face. Nips and tucks are made, injections are administered and when the bandages come off and the bruising goes down, years have been taken off of their looks and they appear to have gone back in time. That’s kind of what has happened with my theme. Today’s Lesson As mentioned in the “Inquiring Minds Want To Know” post, when I started blogging, the birth of this blog’s name first appeared in written form, in my notebook. Over the past three years, I’ve tried to replicate that “feeling”…

I‘m not very good at writing opening lines. It’s like when I see a cute brunette sitting by herself at the bar. I want desperately to get her attention, but can’t wrangle up enough courage to go over there and give it a shot. I’ve always considered myself to be an outgoing person, though, but I’m just terrified of opening lines. I’m sure everyone has had a similar experience at some point in their lives. If you’re like me, most of your blog posts are serious—that’s s-e-r-i-o-u-s. For some reason, known only by the Gods and Google, blog writers believe their writing styles must be as solemn as a funeral dirge. But what if you could write in an entertaining, purposeful way while still achieving your goals, whether it’s convincing readers to take your advice, subscribe to your RSS feed or learn something from you? You can with parody. What is parody? The dictionary defines parody as humorous exaggeration for comic effect. The word comes from the late 16th century Latin/Greek meaning…

Most bloggers dream about having features in newspapers, magazines, radio or TV about you and your blog. Being featured in the mainstream media is seen as the haunt of the exclusive few, but it need not be. Getting the press to cover your blog isn’t too tricky, however you need to work for it. The Ideal Way – What Happened To Me & Why It Isn’t The Best I have been featured a number of times in a number of places. The Guardian, BBC Radio Wales & The North Wales Weekly News have all done a feature on me, or done stories that involve me as a blogger giving my opinion.

    20 Jan 2010 | 4:02 pm
Recent research shows that our brains hard-wire us to love Twitter, Facebook, Google and the search for new information. It makes us curious, it makes us gather data, look up facts and click on different links. It is important to be aware of this brain behaviour as a blogger, as it has some disadvantages but also advantages. Restless, bored, short attention span This behaviour makes us restless, this makes us easily bored, we don’t give attention to longer articles, and it just drives us to discover and explore the next tweet and the next blog post. Possibility and the anticipation of…

This is a guest post by Andy Walton. Many blogs accept guest posts for one very obvious reason – free, quality content is obviously appealing to their owners. And speaking as an author, it’s healthy for the ego to see your work on a high profile and well respected blog. But what are the quantifiable benefits and how can you measure them? I will not offer any guidelines on how to write your guest post, as David has already written a full guest post checklist. Instead I’ll focus on how to monitor the results once published. • How To Pause The Aweber Autoresponder

    David
    5 Feb 2010 | 11:15 am
My readers know that I am a big proponent of Aweber for mailing list management. Out of the many things that you can do with Aweber, one of them is an autoresponder. If you’re not already familiar, an autoresponder is simply a pre-scheduled series of emails that get sent out to a new subscriber on automatic after they subscribe to your list. For many months, I was using an autoresponder sequence. I still am a supporter of the idea, however I’m currently in the process of re-evaluating the idea. That said, there is certainly an issue with an autoresponder when you’re engaging in a…

If you’re going to set up a real business online, you’re going to need a merchant account. You can sell things via Paypal, Clickbank or E-junkie, sure, but as far as I’m concerned, the BEST way to process sales is using your own merchant account. In short, a merchant account allows you to process your own credit cards. So, you might ask, “Why bother? I can do that easily with those other services.” Yes, that is true. Here’s my view, however… Paypal. It is easy, sure. However, you are leaving your funds to their whim. Look around online and you will find horror stories of frozen…

What is Content Delivery Network?A content delivery network or content distribution network (CDN) is a system of computers containing copies of data, placed at various points in a network so as to maximize bandwidth for access to the data from clients throughout the network. A client accesses a copy of the data near to the client, as opposed to all clients accessing the same central server, so as to avoid bottleneck near that server. Content types include web objects, downloadable objects (media files, software, documents), applications, real time media streams, and other components of…

Others feel any comment should be left there as a sign of honesty. Some measure their success by the number of comments they get. Others close comments when they get to a certain number. Some have a rigid and enforced comment policy. Others allow “anything to go.” What do you think about blog commenting? What are your views on the above?

    3 Feb 2010 | 1:20 pm
If you’re unfamiliar with dofollow, let me first clarify what dofollow and nofollow attributes are. What is DoFollow? Dofollow is simply an internet slang term given to web pages or sites that are not utilizing nofollow. Nofollow is a hyperlink inclusion that tells search engines not to pass on any credibility or influence to an outbound link. Incoming links to your blog with a nofollow attribute are not as good for the SEO of your blog as normal dofollow links and will not help increasing your Google Page Rank either. Wordpress blogs by default have nofollow attribute added to links in…

  • Let Obama be Obama

    Rick Klau
    29 Jan 2010 | 11:53 am
Reading Marc Ambinder's recap of President Obama's "question time" at a GOP event today, it reminded me of one of my favorite West Wing scenes: I've refrained from discussing politics on this blog for a long time, which surprises many who followed me through the 2004 and 2006 election, and to a lesser extent the 2008 election. I haven't felt I had much to add to the debate, candidly. I want an honest debate. I realize that's somewhat naive, given the money at stake. But I want an engaged President, one who's intellectually honest but also not afraid of his own convictions. It sounds like…
  • Google Sites - your online resume

    Rick Klau
    28 Jan 2010 | 8:44 am
Several years ago, I put my CV online as a wiki. It started as a way to just catalog the speeches I'd given, articles I'd written, etc., if for no other reason to have it all in one place. As I noted at the time, one of the most popular pages on my blog was the "About Me" page (still is) - not surprisingly, people wonder who the hell you are when they land on your blog from a Google search, and they like being able to get a better sense of your background before deciding if they want to read your posts. But putting that info online has had another benefit: upcoming conferences want my bio, or…
  • Turning off Blogger FTP

    Rick Klau
    22 Jan 2010 | 4:41 pm
Just finished posting on Blogger Buzz about a fairly significant product decision: we're shutting down FTP publishing at Blogger. For the vast majority of Blogger users (99.5% of them, to be exact), this is a non-issue. But for the .5% who continue to use FTP, this is going to be a non-trivial issue. Once it became obvious that we were doing this, we wanted to announce as soon as we knew what our path forward would be. As someone who started blogging on Blogger in 2001 using FTP, I personally recognize the significance of turning off one of Blogger's first features. We will have a migration…
  • Blogger Pages - finally!

    Rick Klau
    21 Jan 2010 | 11:31 pm
We've been hinting at these for a while, and we were this close to getting Pages out before the holidays... but at long last they're here. To say that most Blogger users wanted stand-alone pages on their blogs would be an understatement. I created a couple pages tonight - in addition to the obvious About Me (a good idea for anyone stumbling on your blog from a search, helps them know a bit about you) and Contact Me (more on that in a minute), I created an "Ask me anything" page. Inspired by my friend Annie, who just created a page at Tumblr which lets visitors submit a question that…

    13 Jan 2010 | 11:53 am
A number of people have asked about my Nexus One - did I like it, should they get one, any tips... figured it was a good time to jot down some thoughts. Big, honkin' disclosure: I received this phone for free, and I work for Google. Bit of background: as is now well known, Google gave all employees a Nexus One ahead of the holidays. The phone's existence was confidential at the time, so we were asked to not blog or tweet about it. Officially, the phone was announced on January 5, and has been available for sale through the Google website from that day forward. The phone runs Android 2.1, the…

Back in the day, after I developed the original ACCBoards.Com (which later became a part of and was merged into what is now the Scout network of sports sites), saw my traffic shoot through the roof, partnered up with a TV network and a major cable company, and started getting some serious checks in the mail, I decided that I was an expert in all things communal.  And that I should expand my empire accordingly. I started with SECForums.Com, an SEC sports site.  It never took off, and I don’t own that domain any longer.  Then I developed AVBoards.Com, for audio-video…

    8 Feb 2010 | 6:00 pm
Today is the 100 year anniversary of the Boy Scouts of America.  Wired has a very interesting article asking if the Boy Scouts are still relevant. That’s a fair question. I was a Boy Scout.  In fact I am an Eagle Scout, having obtained that rank in November of 1973, at the ripe old age of 13.  Two years later, I went to the Scout World Jamboree in Lillehammer, Norway.  When I got home, I retired from Scouting, at the top of my Scouting game.  Sandy Kofax-style. I learned a lot from Scouts, and my love of the outdoors was certainly nurtured by the many campouts and…

My dad was a Ford dealer.  Until I bought my Toyota Tundra a couple of years ago, I was a loyal Ford customer.  When I bought my Toyota, I felt a little guilty. No more. This week, in the wake of the Toyota recalls, I received a very official looking envelope, with a large, ominous message on the front” “IMPORTANT TOYOTA RECALL INFO ENCLOSED.” So I put it aside, and opened it today. Much to my surprise and Ford-hate inducing irritation, it was not a letter explaining how to get my truck fixed.  It was an ad from a Ford dealership trying to get me to buy a Ford. …

So here I sit in a fancy hotel room in Austin, watching Paranormal Activity, which is shaping up to be a scary movie, and feeling irritated that the supposedly world-class fitness center in this hotel closes at 9:00 p.m.  Meanwhile people in Days Inns across America are happily running on lesser treadmills in non-world-class exercise rooms.  That are open. Compounding my irritation is the fact that after deciding to freeze my butt off and run outside, I found the nearby trails to be pitch black- not a light anywhere.  It was hard to stay upright and on the trails walking. …

January 7, 2010. A day that will live in infamy. Well note quite. But that day, not so long ago, Will Baum, LCSW, of the blogzine WhereTheClientIs, interviewed me about what I really thought about social media. The focus was on social media fundamentals for therapists, but everything in the article was equally applicable to other professionals. And this is what I said in answer to Will's questions: What's you background? What do you do now?I started off my career somewhat conventionally. Using Twitter to promote my company is _____________.While most big corporations in the US would say "essential", many companieswould say "out of the question", clamping down on any employee use of social media. I even know of one company's social media policy that prohibits employees from participating in reality television. Apparently if you are selected to be on season 16 of the Amazing Race, your company's image will be ruined forever. And reality television isn't even social media (last I checked). What would happen if your organization encouraged EVERYONE, all of your employees, to…

  • Are you a serious blogger?

    Ajith Prasad
    30 Jan 2010 | 10:04 am
Well, that’s a question I keep asking myself from time to time. A lot of people start blogging mainly because they were introduced to and inspired by certain blogging idols or super successful bloggers. Some others do blog because they think it’s cool and the rest do it for other benefits such as online income. However, too many bloggers ditch blogging half way through even before giving it a whole-hearted attempt. This is mainly because they did not originally have the ingredients to be successful in online writing. So what does it take to be a successful blogger who takes blogging…

Interactive Marketing is an evolving trend in Marketing whereby the customers’ inputs, thoughts and requirements are recorded and remembered – either from web inputs or analytics – and worked upon to provide solutions that best match their needs. Interactive Marketing is not Internet Marketing though web is certainly one of the major channels that helps to draw decisions based on various online data points (e.g. search phrase) regarding what the customer is looking for. As per a recent Forrester report on interactive marketing, the money will gradually move away from traditional…
  • Thesis Affliate Woes & Common Problems with Affiliate Schemes

    19 Jan 2010 | 11:46 pm
There is no doubt that the Thesis from DIY Themes is an exceptional WordPress theme that is so easy to customize. As our blogger friend ZK rightly says “If god blogged, he would use the Thesis theme” which I agree to some extend assuming that the God is so bad at PHP that he could not afford to write his own WordPress theme. Jokes apart, I have been having tough time with DIY folks – not with respect to the piece of software they have written but with the affiliate program (and the system) that they are offering. As you know, I am really interested in promoting selected good…

Last month I had written a post about the basics of online forex trading. At that time I mentioned about the eToro forex trading platform where you can start a Forex trading account for just $50 (eToro supports PayPal transfer) and start trading instantly. The eToro trading system now has improved features such as visual trading and support forex trading with investments as low as $2.5 per trade. This means that you now have the possibility of getting forex exposure for just a couple of dollars (Earlier the minimum investment requirement per trade was $25) Forex Trading is no rocket science…

This post is a response to this post I came across the other day tonight on Twitter about the Google Caffeine Search Engine Ranking factors which claimed to put tips to optimize your website to the new version of Google Search which is reportedly live on some datacenters. I question the source  of that article and how the author came to those points. 1. Loading time of your website/blog – This a fairly recent rumour if you ask me. Most webmasters work really hard on reducing load times on their websites. While it is NOT a SEO advantage to do so, it is a BIG user experience factor which…

The point is, I have spent a lot of time in the last three years searching for just the right template. There are a ton of great Wordpress themes out there, but I have trouble making up my mind and I always end up spending hours and hours thinking that the minute I settle on a theme I’ll be missing the perfect one on the next page. One of the most difficult things about being a blogger is maintaining the motivation to write regularly. Consistently updating your blog is one of the keys to blogging success. If you are working to grow a readership, you can easily lose it if your regulars come back and find nothing new. During the lifetime of this blog (nearly three years now) there have been a few times when I’ve taken breaks from upkeep of Pajama Professional. I never plan these hiatuses, they generally happen due to circumstances in my life. The thing is, a blog can seriously suffer from a lack of consistency. This…

  • Home Based Business Financing Guide

    Charles Fuchs
    8 Feb 2010 | 8:25 pm
Well, the good news is there are several resources available to finance your home based business. Youll have to do some research to find whats available in your area, but this guide will show you several areas to begin looking to get the financing you need for your home based business. The Small Business Administration (SBA) is an excellent place to turn to for home based business financing. It doesnt make grants that your home based business wont have to pay back, nor does it make direct loans to small and home based businesses. Instead, the SBA guarantees loans given by private lenders.

  • Thinking Longer Term & Personal Contribution

    Scott Webb
    8 Feb 2010 | 11:23 am
Thinking longer term is super important.  Why am I doing all of this? What’s the point? In this post, I explain a long term idea and contribution that I want to provide the world. I encourage you to read it over because I hope that it helps you think about your own personal contribution to the world and what you want to do long term.  After you’ve read, I would love to hear what your goal or your desire for personal growth is these days.  I’m a huge fan of sharing this kind of information because it really does help the people that don’t comment because they need…
  • Linchpin Contest Winner

    Scott Webb
    5 Feb 2010 | 4:19 pm
Last night I communicated the Winner of a copy of Linchpin by Seth Godin (affiliate link).  I was excited to send the newsletter communication out!  There were a total of 245 ballots that came from about 30 people. And the winner was one of the people that commented on the post. A bunch of people had the max number of ballots – 14.  I listed everyones name out and then randomized the list a few times.  Once the list was totally randomized, I used the random number generator to give me a number between 1 and 245.  Of all the numbers, it came up with number 5. Who was number 5?

    Scott Webb
    1 Feb 2010 | 5:28 am
Seth Godin always resonates with me. I was writing this article here (started on December 22, 2009) and came across a recent post of his titled: Welcome to the Frustration Decade (and the decade of change). Seth kicks off by mentioning a major trend of Change: Change: The infrastructure of massive connection is now real. People around the world have cell phones. The first Internet generation is old enough to spend money, go to work and build companies. Industries are being built every day (and old ones are fading). The revolution is in full swing, and an entire generation is eager to change…
  • Being The Next American Idol Won’t Save You

    Scott Webb
    29 Jan 2010 | 9:45 am
American Idol is in it’s ninth season. For almost 8 years, stadiums around America have been filled with people that want to make it big.  They want to be saved. These people want to be taken care of with fame. If you get to the top 10 on American idol, you’re set for life. Atleast that’s the belief. They’ve been tricked. American Idol is the exact reason you are sitting in the cubicle, office, or standing on the line and hating your job.  Don’t get confused here.  You might think that American Idol and the pursuit of passion would be make a great team. …

  • Can Two Tylenol a Day Keep Rejection and Heartbreak Away?

    Todd B. Kashdan, Ph.D.
    3 Feb 2010 | 8:59 am
Did you know there is only one single characteristic that separates extremely happy people from "merely" happy people? They aren't more grateful, kind, or compassionate. They aren't more energized when they wake up in the morning (drinking the same amount of coffee as the rest of us). Rather, they possess an abundance of significant, meaningful, lasting relationships. That is, there are people they can confide in, call on during difficult times, and share joyous events that have absolutely nothing to do with them. Human beings depend on other people for their well-being and survival. We might…

    Todd B. Kashdan, Ph.D.
    28 Jan 2010 | 5:17 pm
In the next few days, expect a heap of news articles and talking heads blathering about the State of the Union. What's fascinating is how so many people interpret the same event differently (each through his or her own prism of values and beliefs). It's one of the benefits of living in a democracy. Some people never really listened to the State of the Union. Before Obama said a single word, their reactions were pre-determined by assumptions, their favorite media pundits and personal biases about the Democratic Party. This is one of the costs of living in a culture where few people are trained…

Being on a national radio show is often a painful experience. Sometimes you simply lack chemistry with the host (and unlike a party there is no alcohol, and nowhere to hide). They take long, deep breaths directly into the microphone, allowing you intimate knowledge of the saliva in their throat. They ask inane questions, "so you're a twin and you have twins, is that weird for you?" They toss around bewildering phrases such as "spiritual transgressions" and "metaphysical escapes" that bring conversations to a standstill. They grab pockets of time to think of their next comment by inserting…

    Todd B. Kashdan, Ph.D.

I have no idea what the politically correct term is for women who clean hotel rooms. Maid? Chambermaid? Housekeeper? Female room attendant? Hoover lady? If I offend anyone, my apologies for failing to master the appropriate terminology. But everything else is true and rather inoffensive. In this brief post, you will learn a single secret to physical fitness and mental health that might translate into longer, better living.Hotel maids are notorious for waking up at ridiculously early hours to start working. They also are confronted with unwanted flesh at surprising intervals and in surprising…
  • When is Chiropractic Care a Scam? What About Reflexology? Magnetic Therapy?

    Todd B. Kashdan, Ph.D.
    8 Sep 2009 | 7:05 am
I was a horrible football player in high school. Terrified of losing my expensive non-disposable contact lenses, I made the unwise decision to remove them before walking onto the field. As you might expect, I was often crushed to the ground without even seeing who hit me. Friends and family in the stands witnessed brutal breaks in my shoulder and torn ligaments in my neck. When my pain tolerance wore thin and I relented to surgery, the next several months were spent with an arm wed to my torso under plaster. When the cast was removed, besides physical therapy, I saw a chiropractor. And it…

  • Have You Gotten Over Your Fear of Saying “No?” Please say “Yes”

    Alex
    8 Feb 2010 | 9:00 pm
Favors are very important things to some people. It can mean anything from getting traffic to their blog by asking you to retweet a post, to asking you to write a post on their blog. Trust me, as a blogger – people are going to ask you for a lot of favors. Especially if you have a lot of friends and fans. I hate when people ask me to retweet their content, as I think it’s rude. So let me just say this now – if you ask me to retweet your latest blog post, I’m going to say “no.” See how easy that was? “No” is a two letter word, but it’s so…

The last few days have been mind-blowing to me as far as blogging goes. I have thought a lot about the direction I want to take this blog, and where I want to be as a leader of it. As the title suggests, there are going to be plenty of changes made here. More changes will be made to myself and how I look at things than there will be made to the actual blog look itself though. So, it may not be as exciting to you as it is to me, but the work I plan to do this year will undoubtedly change the face of Blogussion for the better. • Is Premium Content Really a Big Myth?

    Seth
    3 Feb 2010 | 9:29 pm
The discussion has arisen over and over in my mind… is premium content really a myth? I mean what is purpose of blogging? Is it a way to communicate? Yes. Is it a way to educate and improve the world? Yes. Is it a way to make money online? Hmmm… Now I believe that blogging is a powerful way to make money online through the selling of products (our theme), affiliate’s products, advertising, and a few other random options.  The real challenge I have with blogging as an income source is with the content itself.  You see as a vesicle for other products, blogging is a great way…
  • What “The Office” Can Teach You About Blogging

    Matt
    2 Feb 2010 | 9:00 pm
Now, we’ve all seen the hit tv show “The Office”. Originally from England, this real life satire of office life has to be one of the funniest shows I have ever seen! Based in Scranton Pennsylvania, “The Office” is about a fictional paper selling company and all the wacky characters that work there. The reason “The Office” is so popular is definitely because of the characters in the show. They form the dry humor that has put the show #1 in the rankings. It almost seems like everyone in the office, as unusual, awkward, and dysfunctional as they are…
  • Why Some of Your Posts “Flop” and how you can Fix it

    Alex
    1 Feb 2010 | 9:00 pm
Not every post you publish on your blog turns into a smashing success. In fact, quite the opposite is true for more posts than we think – they flop. People’s interests in the different topics you talk about in your niche are all different, and with some articles you publish, that interest just won’t be there for some. So without that interest, a post you publish today won’t be as successful as the post you published yesterday. That’s not a bad thing, I mean, you should always cater to different types of readers on your blog. But what should you do if you write a…

  • Orthopedic Dog Beds-Cheap Alternative to Curing Arthritic Dogs

When dogs get older just like Humans, some breeds actually start to get arthritic conditions which may cause a limp and really bring on great stress and pain on the joints.  Recently, after investigating better solutions for arthritis in dogs. The ‘Parisian Love’ ad shows exactly what Google Search is about: You might have already seen this video some time ago; it was uploaded on 19 November 2009 in the SearchStories channel (where there are six more SearchStory videos). Before airing last night the video had about 1 million views, now it has 2.

Once again Vodafone have been plagued by an employee with a peculiar sense of a humour. Late last year one of the Vodafone guys in Hungary got the boot because of a cheeky Twitter message at the expense of T-Mobile. This time the Twitter post was not quite as clever and ever more so immature. Yesterday afternoon many of the thousands of followers of the VodafoneUK Twitter account were surprised by the revelation that “VodafoneUK is fed up of dirty homo’s and is going after beaver’ In The Guardian a Vodafone spokesperson was quoted saying “An individual posted an…

There are two ways to go about making money online. There is taking. And there is giving. When we look around we realize that both ways work, but perhaps one way is better than the other… There are many ways to do marketing, Internet business and even blogging. For me, some ways resonate a lot more than the others. And I’ve noticed I respond to certain kind of marketing a lot better than I do for something else. So perhaps there’s something to learn here. Taking Do you write blog posts only to get people to your blog and maybe down the line, buy some of your stuff. Or things…

    7 Feb 2010 | 7:30 am
When doing affiliate marketing for U.S. companies, one of the trickiest things for a non-U.S. Internet marketer is to figure out the whole U.S. taxation system. Seems that we “foreigners” need to know these things ourselves, because some of the companies running the affiliate programs don’t know the requirements themselves. I’ve written about the challenges that non-native english blogger faces, but that is nothing compared to the confusion that surrounds the U.S. taxation system. Seems that no-one has clarified the issue once and for all, and thus everyone is…

  • Why Content is King Shouldn’t Be Chiropractors’ Only Mantra

    Dr. Patrick MacNamara
    8 Feb 2010 | 6:00 am
If you’ve been around inbound marketing for sometime, you probably have heard the saying that content is king. Matter of fact, one of the first blog posts that I published on Next Generation Chiropractor covered this subject briefly. But, as more chiropractors learn the value of inbound marketing — more specifically, becoming a content publisher — one of the traps I see is that content instead of what matters most becomes their primary focus. In other words, some chiropractors have bought into the mantra without fully understanding the reason for it. Content as Currency…

It’s been all the rage amongst analysts, speculators and rumormongers. This is actually a reoccurring scenario across all niches as product reviews are typically the lowest commented on articles across the board. I was getting fantastic comment results from opinion pieces, but I really wanted the conversation to grow past my own thoughts and into a community atmosphere. The only real, natural progression for that is turning to a forum format to compliment your content. So…Community.Bike198.com was…

As you may have noticed yesterday with the Problogging Is Dead launch, I have stepped into the high def video blogging realm with a new purchase, the Kodak Zi8 pocket HD camcorder. This little hand held unit is about 200 dollars after tax and records in 1080P @ 30 FPS, 720P @ 60 FPS or 30 FPS and WVGA. So as you can see, there are a wide range of options to chose from and record time depends on what size SD card you have inserted into the unit. • Five Dimensions for the Growth of Your Blog (Part 5)

    Brandon Cox
    6 Feb 2010 | 4:28 am
All week I’ve been discussing the five dimensions of growth your blog should reflect. We started with growing warmer, then talked about growing deeper, moved on to growing stronger, and yesterday covered growing broader. I want to close the series by sharing the aspect of growth we focus on most of all – how to grow larger. There is one distinction I want to point out up front in my philosophy from others. Many people look at growing a “larger” blog in terms of inbound statistics – pageviews, subscriber counts, bounce rates, etc. These are important, but they…
  • Five Dimensions for the Growth of Your Blog (Part 4)

    Brandon Cox
    5 Feb 2010 | 9:34 am
I’ve enjoyed writing this week about five dimensions for growing your blog starting with growing warmer, then deeper, and yesterday, stronger. Today I’m tackling how your blog can grow broader. One of the proudest moments of my life came at a men’s retreat a few years ago in the backwoods of southern Missouri. There was a clay pigeon shooting contest and I arrived with my single-shot 20-gauge shotgun. I’d paid roughly $65 for it when I was a kid and hadn’t shot it since I was 13 years old. I was competing against guys who had hundreds or even a couple thousand…

    4 Feb 2010 | 8:32 am
So we’ve talked in this series about how to grow warmer and how to grow deeper with your blog. Today, we’re going to touch on how to grow stronger in your blogging. I want to expand a bit here on a subject that means a lot to me, but seems to be highly controversial in some circles – personal branding. I think making a blog stronger is simple – better hosting, better design, and better articles. But I think our focus needs to be on making the blogger stronger. Why? Because you are bigger than your blog and even though people subscribe to your feed, they’re really…

    3 Feb 2010 | 8:21 am
Yesterday I started talking about five ways your blog should be growing and opened with the idea that your blog should grow warmer. Today, I want to move on and talk about how your blog can also grow deeper. Let’s face it, a lot of blogs in existence today are simply shallow. They claim to offer great “content” but it’s really all the same elementary principles re-hashed or the same very basic how-to stuff that gets scattered out for the mere purpose of ranking high and gaining traffic. I want to challenge you to use your blog not only as a vehicle for traffic and…
  • Five Dimensions for the Growth of Your Blog (Part 1)

    Brandon Cox
    2 Feb 2010 | 5:00 am
I’m going to focus in the upcoming week on five dimensions in which your blog should be growing over time. We tend to think of a blog’s growth in terms of readership or pageviews, but there is much more to growth, long term, than statistical increases. Your blog needs to grow in other ways too. This week’s posts are inspired by a quote from Rick Warren that describes his passion about the local church… A church needs to grow warmer through fellowship, deeper through discipleship, stronger through worship, broader through ministry, and larger through evangelism. That…

Today is part observation, part case study. I want to share a few thoughts about one of the big guns in the social media space; I want to talk a little about Home Depot. I want to talk about Home Depot because they are doing it right, and because today, they are less of a mystery to me. It’s not hard to feel a little intimidated by big brands in social spaces online. On the forum post, it seems people using all kinds of redirect methods are having issues. Mark Check Your eBay/BANS Affiliate Sites posted from the Niche Store Builder website. • Watching Out for the Compliant Child

    Mommies Cafe
    30 Jan 2010 | 6:56 am
As a mother, we are intensely thankful for our compliant child. Usually the most serious of our brood, he or she is the rule follower, seeking to help us keep everyone else in line. Long before we suspect that she has done anything wrong, she comes to us with head hanging low, admitting her shortcomings and outlining her plan for an acceptable punishment. A compliant child is a blessing to any mother who often wonders if we are getting through to our children. But as the compliant child grows older, it is important for us to help her guard against this personality strength that could later…

  • Christmas Let-down and the Second Semester Blues

    Mommies Cafe
    4 Jan 2010 | 7:43 pm
Let’s face it.  We all find it difficult to get back in the swing of things following the long break over Christmas.  With the welcome reprieve from homework, deadlines and alarm clocks, this feeling is magnified for our high school kids. After the stress that comes and goes with mid-term exams, it is never easy to approach the last half of the year with the same intensity of a new school year.  The entire family must be retrained to go to bed early and embrace the school routine, and as the second semester approaches, an atmosphere of dread can quickly overtake our households. My own…
  • Money Matters With Kids

    Mommies Cafe

Growing up in poverty, there wasn’t a lot of cash to manage, but there were many ways to experience money troubles.  I watched my parents repeatedly overspend using credit cards, then file bankruptcy when they were in debt so deep that they couldn’t get out. Aside from this pattern, I had no idea how to manage money as I broke out on my own. Money management became even more important a few years ago as I faced a job loss, and my husband and I found ourselves forced into raising our family of four solely on his income. We were also several thousand dollars in debt with no end in sight.
  • Setting an All-Year Resolution

As the holidays wind down, people start considering New Year’s Resolutions, where they look at the mistakes of the past and try to set resolutions for a better year. I’m a firm believer that you shouldn’t wait till a New Year to make positive changes in your life. However, since it’s that time of year, I’d like you to consider setting an All-Year Resolution. Why an All-Year Resolution? The problem with New Year’s Resolutions is that many of these resolutions don’t stand the test of time. Meaning, you make a resolution to do something better, and then something happens, a little…

Subscribe in iTunes. Subscribe via RSS. Welcome to another Saturday Game Changer interview, this time with my pal Rich Lazzara. I met Rich last October at Blogworld Expo, after being introduced to him by David Risley (the power of networking folks), and we’ve been talking about business ever since. Rich is a lot like me in the way that he’s always thinking of new ways to create and innovate, and because of that, you’re likely to see something from the both of us very soon. Being an executive for a million dollar yacht business, Rich knows a thing or two about the world…

I was reading a post on Jonathan Fields’ blog a few days ago about fairness, and although there were two sides to his story, I’m only going to focus on the one I think is most important, which is the rich vs poor debate. If you haven’t read the post, then you can find it here. But beware, you’ll find some heated debates. I Know What It’s Like to Be Poor So here’s the deal…I’m not rich yet, but I plan to be. In my mind, it’s just a matter of time. However, even though I’m doing OK now, there was a time when I was poor. In fact, I was…

  • The Jack Bauer Guide to Being a Bad Ass

    Guest Blogger
    2 Feb 2010 | 8:41 am
Note: There’s a mix of fun and business in this one, so try not to take it too seriously. Jack Bauer could kick Chuck Norris’ ass with a toothpick and a piece of copper wire. He can move so fast that he could go back in time to kill Hitler before he killed himself…just because he didn’t have anything else to do. Jack is such a pimp that he makes carrying a man purse look cool. Seriously…a man purse full of guns…how much better can it get? Anyway, it should come to no surprise to you that Jack came to me to tell you how to be a bad ass because: #1 My post…

  • How to Create a Killer Free Resource

    Paul Cunningham
    2 Feb 2010 | 5:50 am
Continuing from my last post, The Anatomy of a Free Guide, once you have worked out what you want to achieve and decided to give away a free resource it is time to start working on creating one. Choosing a Topic The first thing you’ll need is a topic to write about.  One of the best sources of ideas is your own audience.  What common needs do they have?  What is a question or problem that you can solve for them? As an example, when I wrote the Twitter/WordPress Integration Guide people were just starting to look at ways to connect their blogs to their Twitter accounts.  There were a…

I recently released my latest free guide, How to Become a Freelance Blogger.  I’ve made it available for download at no charge for my mailing list subscribers.  You can get your own copy here if you want. Free reports, guides, or ebooks are a terrific way to get traffic and new subscribers.  A lot of bloggers use this technique but some are reluctant to do so, feel like they don’t have the time, or have simply never thought of it.  This is the third one I’ve released on any of my blogs and the previous two have been huge successes.  In this post I’ll discuss what…

In this interview Rhys Wynne talks about finding his niche and how he reached his first visitor traffic milestone. Tell us a little bit about your blog. The Gospel According To Rhys began a year or so after I finished university in 2006, and was originally a Blogspot blog for about a year before I received the domain name as a birthday present, at which point I bought some hosting & switched over to Wordpress. It really has been a bit of a brain dump of my thoughts for a number of years, so I kind of grew up with the domain – a lot of the older posts are a lot different from the…
  • The Perils of Synchronous Blogging

    Paul Cunningham
    26 Jan 2010 | 5:52 am
Synchronous (adj) 1. occurring at the same time; coinciding in time; contemporaneous; simultaneous. 2. going on at the same rate and exactly together; recurring together. I get a lot of ideas.  Some of them are good ideas, some of them are bad ideas, and some of them I’ve yet to put to the test.  In fact I’ve probably got as many as 20 ideas for different websites and blogs just sitting in my idea bank at the moment. Having a lot of ideas can be a blessing and a curse.  Obviously the good part is that you’re constantly being inspired and energised by new ideas, but one of…
