The idea of trackbacks and pingbacks are great. It’s a way of getting notified when someone else posts about you on their blog. However, spammers have taken over and it makes you wonder if there is any value in trackbacks anymore. My guess is that most bloggers will say that the value is little to none. The number of spammy trackbacks are overwhelming at times and, even if you do have a good spam plugin protecting you, the ones that get through are not quality. The chances that a good trackback comes into your site is rare, but when it does, it is great to see. The idea of trackbacks is…

The First Week of Your Blog: Set Up Key Pages
ProBlogger Blog Tips12 Mar 2010 | 6:05 amA Guest Post by Johnny B. Truant from The Charlie and Johnny Jam Sessions. I got an email the other day from a man who was at his wit’s end. The email explained that in this man’s business, he was doing many of the same basic things that I was doing, but with much less success. He had been building websites for years. He had refined his craft. He felt that the sites he built were better, more complete, and had more features and better support than mine. He had more experience than I had. He even said that he was probably smarter than I was. Yet I was doing really well and he was… -

How to Blog: How to Choose a Blog Niche [6 Tips]
11 Mar 2010 | 8:56 amEarlier in the week we looked at the importance of ‘niches’ when it comes to building profitable blogs. Today I want to extend the topic and gives the process that I tend to use when working out if I want to start a new blog in a particular niche. I hope you find it helpful. Many factors will come into play when it comes to choosing a niche to blog about – but the following are those that I tend to pay most attention to: 1. Your Interest in the Topic I started out blogging on topics that interested me – but as I began to see the potential to make money from my blogs… -
Let’s Meet at SXSWi!
11 Mar 2010 | 5:56 amAs this post goes live I’ll be in the process of arriving at SXSW Interactive in Austin Texas. I was fortunate enough to at SXSWi two years back and it was one of the best conference experiences that I’ve had – so I’ve made it a priority this year to return. My schedule is pretty open. The main thing that I’ll be doing is a book reading this Friday night. I’ll be talking about some of what Chris and I have included in the 2nd edition of the ProBlogger book (due out next month). How to Track What People Do With Your Email
13 Mar 2010 | 10:20 amRecently on my blog a commentator asked me if I sell their email. They also said since they started putting in their email into forms to get free stuff around the internet they started getting a TON of spam. This is a great question and I am really glad it was brought up. First of all… No I do not sell or share your information with anyone and never will. But lets be honest… how would you possibly know if I did? (I will answer that in a bit) Second of all DUH. People are giving you free stuff and collecting your email BECAUSE they are going to email you and try to sell you… -

The Surprising Old-School Secret to Blogging Success
12 Mar 2010 | 6:26 amAbout 80% of your blog’s success comes from “ass in chair” time. That’s the time you spend writing posts, editing posts, finding the perfect image, connecting with fellow bloggers, answering comments, shaping up your SEO, and all the other tasks we teach you about here on Copyblogger. You’ve got to get that stuff right. But great blogs are not built by “ass in chair” time alone. There’s actually a significant element to your success that you may be neglecting with all that work and focus. Every once in awhile, you might consider getting out of the chair and physically setting… -
How to Win in Las Vegas, And in Online Business
11 Mar 2010 | 6:25 amI’ve written a few contrarian things lately. Specifically, I ranted a bit about why I think the most common “make money online” technique doesn’t work for most people, and about how, really, the most important ingredients of success are persistence and grit. Then, on my own blog, I ranted about why “systems” for achieving specific results don’t work. I got a lot of comments, emails, and tweets agreeing — too many people are looking for a quick fix, and we need to remember the basics: hard work, and good old-fashioned stick-to-it-iveness. But… -
Blogging Lessons from The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo
10 Mar 2010 | 5:00 amA 40 year-old unsolved murder mystery. Strange cryptic codes in a bible. Sweden, sandwiches, and many, many cigarettes. The badass-est female protagonist since . . . forever. And an author who has, posthumously, caused quite a ruckus in the book world and in the minds of conspiracy theorists everywhere. Yes, I’m talking about The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo. If you haven’t heard of it, the rest of us are inviting you to come out from under your rock. The Power of Confident Writing
9 Mar 2010 | 6:29 amThere’s a wonderful European-style market and bakery in the Oak Lawn area of Dallas. They serve everything from made-to-order salads and sandwiches to chef-prepared, ready-to-eat meals. But what I love most about the place is the sign on the door when you leave. It’s classic. The sign doesn’t read “Please Come Again” or “Thank You for Your Business” or some other typical exit sign platitude. It says . . . “See you tomorrow.” That kind of confidence is compelling and downright sexy. Sure, a fantastic product, service, or experience is the starting point from which confidence… -
What Do You Do When You Run Out of Knowledge?
8 Mar 2010 | 8:12 amBloggers have a distinct disadvantage. When someone hires an expert in — oh, let’s say marketing — that expert can dispense the same information she did for the last client. And the client before that one. And the one before that. Not bloggers. Blogging is about breaking down everything you know into bite-sized chunks so that people can learn it all over a period of time. If they look back through the archives, they can often see the entire breadth of your knowledge. Then one day, your well runs dry. This is a scary moment for any blogger. It’s not like running out of…

Affiliate Marketing: Choosing The Best Model For You
14 Mar 2010 | 7:06 pmChoosing the affiliate marketing model that works for your site or blog can be tough. If you’re a publisher, you will need to weight pros and cons of CPM vs CPC vs CPA models to find which one will work for you and provide the best return for your site ad space. If you’re an advertiser, you’ll need to figure out which model will work for the type of product you’re trying to promote. Each affiliate marketing business model offers different benefits and drawbacks. To help you decide which model will work best for you, Ace Affiliate has created the following handy… -

13 Mar 2010 | 7:33 pmDot Com Pho returns to Happy Pho for another excitement filled episode. This time we had seven people showed up to dine on a variety of Pho dishes (mostly consumed by Chef Aaron Koo AKA the new Stephen Fung). To makes thing even more happy, Michael Yurechko discovered that Happy Pho had wireless Internet access (not in the restaurant but nearby). This episode of Dot Com Pho celebrates the heroes of entrepreneurship. Evan Carmichael came up a great idea for trading cards featuring famous entrepreneurs. The entrepreneurs were selected by 33 famous bloggers (of which I am one). The bloggers were… -
How’d You Like to Bid on Some Money?
12 Mar 2010 | 6:11 pmThe online auction is nothing new. If you’re looking to score a deal on a new Nintendo Wii or maybe a used digital camera, heading to a place like eBay isn’t such a bad idea. One of the newer developments in recent years is the penny auction, giving you the opportunity to buy an iPod for pennies on the dollar. Quite literally. Taking a slightly different approach to this concept is Bid on Cash, the website that serves as the subject of today’s review. As its name implies, you actually bid on cash prizes. Getting into the Game Getting started with Bid on Cash is a very quick… -
Are You Pre-ordering Your iPad Today?
12 Mar 2010 | 11:19 amThe wonder tablet from Apple went up for pre-order this morning. Did you get your order in or are you going to wait until it ships on April 3? I am getting four iPads but I had to get them from the US Apple site because that’s the only place that is taking orders. I have a fairly good idea on what Apple’s plans are for the new iPad and it’s not what you might think. I see the iPad as Apple’s entry into the online book market, which is worth $4.5 billion a year. By comparison, online music does $2.3 billion a year, most of which is controlled by Apple iTunes. If Apple… -

Learning to blog is like learning to drive; just take it slow and steady.
24 Feb 2010 | 7:04 amGetting started with a blog can be exciting and nerve racking for some; just like learning to drive. You really want to get started, you really want to do it, but once you are behind the wheel, you start worry about everything. You want to do everything right, but there are so many unknowns. What if… How do I… Umm… Like driving, you need to start somewhere and take it slow. Sure, you want to take on the world and just go, but there is no way to know everything right away; even if you did read all the books and how-to’s. How To Syndicate Your Blog to Social Networks
15 Feb 2010 | 1:11 pmA blog should be considered the central hub of your social networking universe. Everything you do should drive traffic back to your blog, or website, as a way of combining all your efforts to give your brand maximum exposure. Once thing you can do to help populate your social networks would be to update your status with your blog posts when new content is published. By no means is auto-populating a service like Twitter going to get good results on its own, but as one piece of a social networking strategy, it can help a network grow. Here are just a few of the many ways you can automatically… -
Blogger.com Shutting Down FTP
1 Feb 2010 | 7:45 amOne of the biggest features that Blogger.com had over other free blogging sites is the ability to publish files to a website via FTP. This allowed site owners to have a blog in a directory on their site without having to install and maintain software on their web server. Unfortunately, on March 26th, Blogger.com is shutting down their FTP functionality. Blogger claims that only .5% of their users use this feature and that it’s a big strain on their engineering staff to keep it working like it should. So they are shutting it down. So now what? Are you a part of that .5%? Believe it or… -

How to Use Editorial Calendars for Your Blog
7 Mar 2010 | 8:21 amOne of the challenges for business bloggers that I constantly hear about is the never-ending need for fresh, relevant and timely content ideas to keep one's audience engaged. I've covered this in depth over the years, however I was discussing this with Shannon Cherry, known as the Power Publicist and founder of Penny Pinching Publicity, and she told me about how she consistently out-scoops the media with her content. As a result she gets tons of traffic to her blog, positions herself as the go-to expert in her industry, and she gets free exposure for her business and those of her clients.I… -

Beauty Supply Stores Need Blogs Too
3 Mar 2010 | 9:05 pmToday I was interviewed for an article in a trade magazine for beauty supply store owners. Last year the same writer interviewed me for a similar story that was published in Pool and Spa News for owners of pool supply stores.[Just reread the article and there's good info, if I do say so myself!] Apparently, most beauty supply stores are what the writer refers to as "mom and pop" retailers. One or two stores, usually in malls and located near a nail salon (that's my observation). At least here in Los Angeles, it seems like you'll almost always find a beauty supply store near a salon. While we… -
Two Blogger Resources for TypePad and Wordpress
26 Feb 2010 | 1:09 pmIf you're a new blogger or a do-it-yourselfer, I have a couple of recommendations for you. Part of my job, as I see it, is to stay on top of blogging resources and tools to make things easier for you. As you probably know, this blog is built on the TypePad platform and I've been using TypePad since 2004. At the time I started blogging I didn't know what options I had and TypePad was recommended to me. I love the platform. Its evolution has been tremendous and in late 2009 the entire system was upgraded. In 2005, Patsi Krakoff and I wrote Build a Better Blog (no longer available), a manual to…

Why is “Linkbait” Such a Dirty Word?
As bloggers, we’re supposed to be building traffic with good, useful content. Though it’s something we all strive for, we’re not supposed to publicly state how much we want to build traffic and back links. We don’t want anyone to know we want our posts to go viral. We would be scandalized if folks knew [...] -

Business Idea: Copyright Protection For Web Publishers
11 Mar 2010 | 8:14 amI am quite passionate about the Internet, and as such I am always coming up with new ideas for websites and online businesses. Blogging Dynamite: The Power of Connections

Far too often I find that people are getting caught up with the technical aspects of blogging like which plugins are the best, which designs are the most appealing, which methods of SEO yield the greatest results while at the same forgetting about the most important aspect of all, connecting with real people. It’s certainly a good idea to work on creating an appealing looking site that can also effectively draw in traffic from search Engines like Google, Yahoo and Bing. Yet… -

12 Tips on Live Blogging & Content Marketing at SXSWi
12 Mar 2010 | 7:10 pmSo here I sit in the DFW airport hanging out with David Berkowitz and Joe Morin waiting for my connection to Austin. Ford’s Focus on Social Media: Scott Monty Interview
9 Mar 2010 | 8:04 amWhen you think of successful consumer brands in the social media space, names like Dell, Zappos and Pepsi come to mind. Another is Ford. Last year the Ford Fiesta movement generated a tremendous amount of awareness (and pre-orders) for a vehicle that wasn’t available to the public yet. (Great summary on Jeff Bullas’s blog) At the same time, it inspired a community to engage, create content and continue discussions about the Fiesta with over 7 million video views. While in Dearborn, I visited The Henry Ford Museum, The Rouge Truck Factory and had an invitation to visit…

5 Strategies to Maintain and Improve Your #1 Rankings in Google – After You’ve Reached the Top
10 Mar 2010 | 11:18 pmMost SEO articles and blog posts I come across talk about how to achieve top rankings in Google for targeted keywords and what it takes to get there. While ranking is of course the crucial first step, what’s missing from the sea of information out there is the answer to the question, “what next?” What do you do when you finally reach your goal of #1 rankings? Do you simply enjoy the ride and pray Google keeps you at the top spot? Or is there a way you can be more proactive with your approach so you can maintain and even add to your success? In this article, I want to answer all of those… -
LogoBee Review – A Good Place to Get a Snazzy New Logo?
5 Mar 2010 | 2:48 pmOther than your domain name, your logo is probably the first thing visitors will notice about your website. Think of it as the first impression – which believe it or not has a big impact on whether users stay on or click the back button. Would you go to a job interview wearing a t-shirt and jeans? Or go on a date without showering for 5 days? How about putting a plain gray cover on a new book you’ve written? Yeah, I didn’t think so. In the same way, your logo isn’t something you can skimp on. It’s probably a lot more important than you think, regardless of… -
6 Ways to Optimize Your SEO for Misspellings – And Why It Pays to be a Bad Speller
3 Mar 2010 | 2:12 pmI don’t know about you, but I take spelling pretty seriously in my web projects, especially for content sites and blogs like this one. I’m careful to ensure that words are spelled correctly and that typos are minimized. With spell check included in most word processing tools, I don’t think there’s really any excuse for silly spelling errors online. Or is there? Despite my urge for spelling perfection, it turns out that a significant percentage of web users are sloppy with their language – particularly when using search engines like Google. There are around 10… -
Romow Directory Review – Is It Worth Submitting to?
11 Feb 2010 | 6:20 pmBack in the early 2000s, link building was relatively easy. All you really needed to do was submit your sites to a large quantity of online directories using your targeted keywords – and you were almost guaranteed improvements in organic search rankings. A lot has changed since then, and needless to say, SEO is a lot more difficult and complex. As for directory links, Google and the other search engines have pretty much discounted their SEO value and there are now only a handful of directories worth submitting to. So how do you know whether or not a directory is worth submitting to? -

How Do You Feel When Someone Copies and Pastes Your Post?
11 Mar 2010 | 11:31 pmThis is probably one of those posts where not everyone is going to agree with what I say or why I say it But it’s one of the most common traps for new people — so we do need to discuss our views! Here’s what I say: It’s really great to love someone else work! But you can’t copy and paste large sections or complete articles from other bloggers posts directly into posts on your blog or website. Blogger Rolls Out New Template Designer
11 Mar 2010 | 12:25 pmI’ve never understood Blogger. In my humble opinion, it is a cumbersome blogging platform that has always dragged way behind the competition. Even under the Google umbrella, the novice CMS has failed to impress. But perhaps there is hope… Starting today, Blogger is rolling out the Blogger Template Designer, a tool that will give users much greater control over how their blog looks and operates. New professional designs, full color control, stock photo backgrounds and HTML/CSS implementation open up the door to the best looking Blogger blogs to date. The feature can currently be… -
A Blog Mentor Is Hard to Find
8 Mar 2010 | 5:34 pmA crusty old journalism professor I once had used to preach the following: “To get where you want to go, you should talk to someone who has been there.” Ideally, that’s where a mentor comes in. A wise and trusted counselor who influences our work and supports us along the way. You know, the older guy who has earned our respect by example. Now all he has left to accomplish is helping shape today’s youth. I’ve yet to find my blogging Mr. Miyagi (See Karate Kid), and I have a few ideas why: 1) A numbers game. Perhaps there simply aren’t enough success stories. -
Blogging Lesson From the Second Grade
2 Mar 2010 | 12:54 pmWhen I think back to grade school, I still break out into a sweat remembering the horror of being called on unexpectedly by a teacher and asked to read a passage aloud. You always had the feeling that you were one stammer or mispronunciation away from being ostracized. My wife, who is a teacher but still takes advanced education classes, recently asked me to help her with an assignment. My job? Read the paper she wrote aloud. And you know what? The tactic that she employs with her second grade class could be beneficial to bloggers. You might look like a fool, but here are a few reasons to… -
Promote Your Blog Via License Plate
1 Mar 2010 | 8:49 amAs you learned from my Myers-Briggs self-assessment, I’m the kind of guy that rather blend in than stand out in a crowd. That means I can produce killer content, but don’t get a gold medal when it comes to self-promotion. As I was sitting in traffic this morning thinking up ways to promote my blog offline, it occurred to me that a great opportunity could be staring me right in the face…literally. What about a vanity license plate? PROS Promotion: For a $50 fee and $31.25 annually, my blog’s name will be visible to everyone who spots my car. In this day and age of… -
Respect Your Blogging Accomplishments
26 Feb 2010 | 7:16 amA wise man once said, “Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.” That genius was Ferris Bueller, the fictional namesake of the ever-popular 1986 movie written and directed by John Hughes. Time as a blogger flies by. When you’re not busy pounding out quality content, you are researching post ideas, reading about SEO, promoting your work on social networks, etc. At any given point, you are juggling a dozen different balls, and like most of the bloggers I know, you are amazing – because you keep most of them in…

More on that pesky "Cloud" term
9 Mar 2010 | 2:08 pmI posted the other day on the multiplicity of Cloud definitions, and whether I thought the term itself is useful, or all hype. 5 Email Marketing Tips to Get Repeat Online Customers
11 Mar 2010 | 5:30 amGuest post by Eric. There are several types of internet marketing. Doing good SEO or PPC helps attract traffic, but what can be done to keep online business repeating? The answer is lead capture through email marketing. What is email marketing? Email marketing is doing internet marketing through email. This usually starts with a sign-up form to get an email address (and permission) from your lead. Using this address well can help communicate with your customers to build rapport and educate them about your various products and/or services. But just having an email address and spamming your… -

12 Dec 2009 | 10:03 pmIf you’re using WordPress as a CMS, you may have set up static pages for both a front page (e.g. “Home”) and a page to list your latest blog posts (e.g. “Blog”).I did that today for a client site and immediately realized that in the site’s main menu the Blog link would look a lot better if it had a submenu containing all the blog categories. Motivation Tips that Actually Work: 6 Sure-Fire Ways To Get Writing and Keep Writing
11 Mar 2010 | 7:30 amA guest Post by Annabel Candy of Get in the Hotspot Have you noticed how easy non-writers think writing is? When you’re a writer that can be frustrating. There are three main things about writing that make it lack the social proof people expect of professional activities. It’s intangible – Many people don’t seem to consider writing a proper job, maybe because often writers type away for days with apparently little to show for it. Yes, there may be the occasional article in a newspaper, possibly even a published book you can actually show people. But even then that… -
Persistence Pays – But Not Enough to Cover the Rent
9 Mar 2010 | 7:11 amA Guest Post by Wayne E. Pollard, Creator of Bo’s Café Life I believe that persistence is the most important trait you should have if you want to get published. To get my first piece published in The New York Times, I pitched it to at least five different editors until I found one who was interested in the piece. Before pitching that piece to The New York Times, I had pitched it to an editor at The Village Voice, who rejected it. If I hadn’t pitched it to The New York Times, the piece would still be sitting in a file on my computer, unpublished. To get published, you must query… -
How To Write Relentlessly Focused – and Still Say Everything You Want To
4 Mar 2010 | 1:27 amA guest post by Bamboo Forest of Pun Intended Wouldn’t it be fantastic if there was a method ensuring every article you wrote was concise, relentlessly focused and said everything you wanted it to? There is. I recommend using a thesis statement and outline for many posts that you pen. 10 Writing Rules You Can’t Break…And How to Break Them
1 Mar 2010 | 1:04 amA guest post by Eric Cummings of On Violence First, there was the “old school.” A bunch of stubborn grammarians got together and decided what defined “proper English.” Don’t end sentences with prepositions, never begin a sentence with “and” or “but,” and never split infinitives. They were strict, but they established the rules of modern English grammar. Then came the “new school” in the sixties. And like the sixties, it was “craaaaaaazy.” As language evolved, they evolved. Led by William Zissner and John Trimble,… -

Waiting for the sites to actually respond to your inquires. Haggling over rates and prices, trying to get a better deal. Waiting for package information. Calculation…

Book Review of Rework, a New Bestselling Business Book
10 Mar 2010 | 6:43 pmRework is the new business book by Jason Fried and David Heinemeier Hansson, the executive team of 37signals. I’m a big fan of their blog and Backpack, one of their products, so when I found out they were releasing a business book, I had to check it out. The release date was yesterday so I went to my local Barnes & Noble, found the book, and read the whole thing there in two hours. Yes, the book is short compared to other business books but I liked it so much that I bought it for reference sake. Even though the book is not a book about blogging, I think the book has many great tips… -
Why eBay Partner Network Makes 22 Times More Money Than AdSense On My Blog
4 Mar 2010 | 10:48 amUpdated on March 5, 2009: I noticed a huge discrepancy with my Google Analytics pageviews versus the impressions being reported by eBay Partner Network. I did some digging and found that eBay counts link impressions not page impressions. For example, one of my posts has 22 links to eBay. This means a pageview is actually 22 impressions to eBay. Needless to say that changed my calculations. I reworked the numbers and found that instead of 200% in the original post, eBay makes me 22 times more money than AdSense! Or in percentage terms, 2,100%. Of course, with this new knowledge, I’m very… -
Your Product Doesn’t Have to Contain 100% Unique Content
24 Feb 2010 | 10:55 pmMany bloggers seem to find the task of creating a product daunting. I know I did. I knew creating a product could greatly increase my income, but coming up with content to fill up an ebook, video, membership program, or any other product seemed like an overwhelming project. However, after listening to this interview with Pay Flynn and thinking back at products I had bought, I realize that creating a product doesn’t have to be this huge audacious goal. See you don’t need your product to have 100% unique content. This realization takes a lot of the work out of the equation. You can… -
The Best Way to Differentiate Your Blog
17 Feb 2010 | 8:39 pmOne of the blogging tips that I hear a lot is be different. Be unique. Stand out from the crowd. This is a great advice for typical businesses and it’s also helpful for probloggers especially with all the competitors on the internet. But how can you apply it practically to your blog? I’ve been thinking about this advice for the last couple of years and from my experience, I think I’ve realized the best way to differentiate your blog. The answer is pretty simple so it might surprise you. Narrow your topic. That’s it. Nothing too complicated or revolutionary, but this… -
A-List Blogs Are Not Good Examples to Follow
10 Feb 2010 | 7:40 pmPhoto by Kriss Szkurlatowski When I first learned about problogging, I definitely looked up to the A-List blogs. You know, the TechCrunches, the Gizmodos, the TMZs, the Daily Koses, the Mashables. These were the blogs that had made it. They were the most high profile blogs. They had the most traffic. And more traffic meant more money, right? Therefore, I thought of them as good examples to follow. I patterned my first couple of blogs after them. But after a couple failed blogs, over the last couple of months I’ve realized that for most of us those blogs are not the best examples to…

ummm... so what's up with Utah?
12 Mar 2010 | 9:59 amI don't usually take this space for political rants, and I don't think this will be all that mean - but I just have to ask a question. Seriously, what is going on in Utah politics?Let me see if I get this right - the majority leader of the Utah House of Representatives told everyone that 25 years ago he got naked in a hot tub with a 15-year-old female employee of his. He was 28 and married. But seriously, they were just naked in the hot tub as a "spur of the moment thing" and that was it. Then in 2002, when this guy was running for Congress, the girl resurfaces and he pays her $150,000 to… -
Science Bloggers Discussing Scientists Discussing Science Blogs
11 Mar 2010 | 11:35 amBora Zivkovic wrote a post this week about an article in the Journal of Science Communication that suggested that science blogs may not be doing enough to engage non-scientists in discussions about science. (Or something like that. I'm not a scientist.) Bora questioned the methodology. But he also said something that seemed rather obvious to me:Most bloggers write for their own amusement and not with a specific goal of popularization of science, and, after a while, tend to adapt to what their audience actually is. Thus, a knowledgeable audience will result in further posts being written at… -

Never Write Off Mom Bloggers, Part 2,953
10 Mar 2010 | 6:30 amI first learned about Leah Peterson doing research for a social media client a few years ago. I was trying to find women bloggers who would be interested in participating in a conference call with Gloria Steinem. (Yes, THAT Gloria Steinem. It really wasn't that hard.)If you read Leah's blog you learn very quickly that she's really up front about her mental illness. She shares a lot of details. And I have to admit I was a little nervous about inviting her to the call. We were putting a high-profile client in a public setting, and we would be giving access to someone who wrote frequently about…

Looking For Work Should Be Ongoing
14 Mar 2010 | 12:00 pmI don’t know if you’re anything like me, but I don’t take advice usually until I’ve gone through all the painful lessons the advice was meant to save me from. Here’s a case in point. When I first started freelancing on the Internet I wanted to learn all I could so I decided to read a few articles I found about my new chosen profession. One in particular told me that although there were many benefits to freelancing like setting your own hours and being your own boss, one of the big downfalls was having to be constantly looking for work because contracts and clients change frequently. -
Twitter Sells Wine to Promote Literacy
14 Mar 2010 | 6:00 amNot many know about the Fledgling Initiative by Twitter, the micro-blogging site that everybody loves. The Fledgling Initiative is a Twitter project that makes wine for the benefit of a non-profit organization named ‘Room-to-Read‘ that extends educational opportunities for deprived children worldwide. According to the description on the website: “These wines are being made using some of the best vineyards in California by the acclaimed winemaking team at Crushpad” A single bottle, “a suave rendition of Pinot Noir produced from top-flight California… -

Writing Instructions to Improve Your Writing Skills
12 Mar 2010 | 12:30 pmI recently covered improving non-fiction writing through the use of studying fiction structure. Today, I’d like to continue with another writing style; writing instructions. Your website may not be a how-to website, but writing out instructions can help you hone your writing skills in general. Writing instructions includes giving step-by-step details of how to do something, procedures to follow, operating machinery, or a computer, etc. These are written as commands using an active voice. Before you write instructions you need to understand what it is you’re giving directions on,… -
Complement Your Blog with a RebuzzThis Button
12 Mar 2010 | 8:00 amAre you a huge fan of Google Buzz? I’m not, but many people are and use it on a daily basis. It is great for sharing but also can be very noisy. For those that are, you will probably love RebuzzThis; it’s a Tweetmeme style site except for Google Buzz instead of Twitter. Having a retweet button on your blog posts now is pretty much standard, but now it’s also great to have a Buzz button. Getting a button from RebuzzThis is very easy and will take you about 5 seconds. Click on “Get a Button“, choose your button style and then select where you’d like to put…

Sunday Morning SEO: Link Building With the Cold Call Guest Post Method
14 Mar 2010 | 12:40 amI’ve argued before that writing guest posts is the best SEO strategy for bloggers. But how can you implement a guest posting campaign that’s both efficient and effective? In this post, I’ll share my favorite method of guest posting that’s given me a lot of link building success. I call it the “Cold Call Guest Post Method”. It’s probably not the best name since cold calling has bad connotations. But the method has worked very well for me and the bloggers I targeted have been very happy with my guest posts. Guest Posting Made Simple Basically, you find… -
Buzzie Adds Push Notification, Still Lacks Image Uploading (Google Buzz)
12 Mar 2010 | 1:03 pmBuzzie, one of the two iPhone apps supporting Google Buzz (a micro blogging service that is slowly gaining popularity) has just launched push notification support for their app. Similar to how other micro blogging apps like Echofon and SimplyTweet function, Buzzie will send a user an alert whenever they receive a new comment or “buzz” (the latter which I do not recommend if one has over a hundred followers). While this addition makes the app much more useful than the Google Buzz web app, Buzzie is still lacking in image support, a feature its rival Buzzr has (thanks in part to… -

WordPress Book Review: WordPress In Depth, The Dark Horse Among WordPress Books
11 Mar 2010 | 3:21 amWhen I was initially offered the possibility to review WordPress In Depth by Bud Smith and Michael McCallister (@workingwriter), I was sceptic. First the title of the book wasn’t disclosed by the publisher and when, a quick Google search brought me to an Amazon title by two for me unknown within the WordPress scene authors and heck, the cover even didn’t have a WordPress logo. Little did I know that I was about to discover a book I was going to recommend to people and even would become my new reference book for a certain group of WordPress users. Bloggers Delight: 3 iPhone Apps For Google Buzz Fanatics
9 Mar 2010 | 10:46 amIt’s now been exactly one month since Google launched Google Buzz upon the general population, and as expected the service has not exactly been a hit amongst the masses. However, like its Friendfeed predecessor, Google Buzz is slowly becoming a hit amongst many in the tech blogosphere, and I’m beginning to see even art bloggers embrace Google Buzz (as they can easily display their albums to the delight of their fans). For those of you who are more interested in using Google Buzz as a micro blogging service, here are 3 iPhone apps you may want to check out. Buzzie Launched with…

The Mahalo Paid Link Evidence Trail
13 Mar 2010 | 2:53 pmMatt Cutts asked me in a Sphinn comment the following question relating the my post on paid links on Mahalo.com: Let’s ignore, for the moment anyways, that for absolutely any other website on the internet with the evidence that I presented the process would most likely entail the webmaster proving their innocence rather than the person reporting the paid link proving that they are guilty, and that they would have to do so after they actually got banned. Before I get started, keep in mind… whatsyourconundrum.com is not Conundrum Wine’s main website. Their actual… -
Stray Leftover Hacked Wordpress Database Entry: rzf.php
13 Mar 2010 | 8:27 amI never use my uploads directory or Wordpress’s built in media management here on Smackdown, instead preferring to upload and manually insert the html for images myself in my posts (I know, I am weird that way), but my friend Donna has when she has guest blogged here in the past. I therefore knew that the uploads directory existed and had a few images in there, but never really had any reason to look at them. It was totally by accident that I clicked on the Media link in the admin section this morning. I am glad that I did, however, since otherwise I never would have known that I had… -
Jason Calacanis: Screw You Google, Now I’ll Sell Links Too
12 Mar 2010 | 5:45 amBy now Google has to be getting more than a little embarrassed about the behavior of Mr. Jason Calacanis and his site, Mahalo.com. Aaron Wall did a very well written piece explaining how Mahalo Makes Black Look White and the spammy techniques they were employing. This isn’t the first time Aaron has blogged about Mahalo either, and talked about exactly how this makes Google look bad. For those who might not know, I have also been blogging about this recently. While Google will ban smaller websites from their search results or from AdSense on a whim, usually it takes heavier coverage for… -

I am flipping through Mahalo.com today, just seeing if you’re keeping your word or not, when all of a sudden I notice this huge amount of pages with odd names that somehow I missed before: http://www.mahalo.com/cgs-20625 http://www.mahalo.com/cgs-9896 http://www.mahalo.com/cp-154-526 http://www.mahalo.com/daa-1097 http://www.mahalo.com/daa-1106 These are all nothing more than content stolen from Wikipedia. Dear Jason Calacanis: This Isn’t An “Absurd Microscope”
10 Mar 2010 | 5:43 amJason Calacanis replied to my post from yesterday. In it he discusses how he is indeed deleting many of the spammy pages that I had pointed out. Some, like the duplicate content doorway pages, he continues to defend. Either way, progress is being made. However, he still kinda kills it by tossing in at the end about how this whole scrutiny on his site is “absurd”, and anyone who calls him on it is being “vicious”: At the end of the day the absurd microscope we’re being put under by the SEO community is actually making our product better, and yes even improving the…

Social Media Artists on the Rise at Panera West
12 Mar 2010 | 12:57 pmOne of the core beliefs I have about Social Media is that it gives everyone the potential of an equal voice or platform. It's no longer necessary to have an agent or publisher or gallery to get a foothold (though if you're good, those will become necessary to continue climbing). One of the ways to get a foothold is by using Social Media to connect, collaborate, and communicate what's working and what's not online. How To Analyze The Profit Potential Of An Online Market
10 Mar 2010 | 9:34 amOne of the most crucial aspects of running an online business (or an offline business that markets online) is market research. You need to know whether a market is profitable before you put time, energy, and resources into a project. People who skip this step often find themselves frustrated and it’s easy to see why. Putting hours into something that will never pay is obviously a terrible idea. Is Internet Marketing Overly Saturated?
8 Mar 2010 | 9:35 amA few days ago I was talking to a good friend about work. He’s a real estate agent and is GREAT at it. He’s made a lot of money and even with the current real estate climate he’s still making money. He’s pretty interested in getting some other things going so he was asking me quite a bit about what I do. During the conversation, my friend asked me a question that I found interesting: How do you make any money at that when the internet is so saturated? It was an innocent enough question and probably one that a lot of people think about. He knows that there are a million… -

How To Improve Your HubPages Earnings
22 Feb 2010 | 1:08 pmPosting my HubPages earnings seemed to spark up quite a lot of discussion in comments and in the forum. People took a look at their earnings from HubPages and compared those earnings to the amount of effort that they have put in to their hubs. I find those discussions to be very interesting, uplifting, and disconcerting – all at the same time. What troubles me the most is that it’s blatantly obvious that some individuals aren’t seeing things clearly. They don’t want to accept the realities of being in business for themselves. There are a lot of core principles that are…

Scribe SEO Review: How a Little SEO Goes a Long Way
10 Mar 2010 | 9:00 amScribe SEO is a paid Wordpress plugin with a catchy name that helps your content rank higher in search engine results. With a click of a button, your content is analyzed and given a score based on its structure and keyword density. If your score is less than 100%, Scribe will tell you exactly what to do to make it higher. The higher your score, the better chance you have of ranking. Think of it like having a personal SEO consultant look over your content every time you publish something. It really works. I’ll make a long story short: the day after I installed Scribe SEO and optimized… -
5 Gentle SEO Tips for Creative Writers
8 Mar 2010 | 11:30 amFor the sake of clarity, the term “creative writer” in this article refers to anyone who considers their writing a gift of art long before it serves a function of marketing. Not everyone who blogs or writes online is trying to get a sales lead or talk about their business. And not everyone who reads online is looking for a product, service or idea to solve their problems. Some writers just want to express themselves more creatively, hoping that—somewhere along the way—a community of impassioned readers take notice. So it’s understandably frustrating when the… -
Why Creative Writers Need SEO
2 Mar 2010 | 6:12 pmFor the sake of clarity, the term “creative writer” in this article refers to anyone who considers their writing a gift of art long before it serves a function of marketing. Do you ever wonder why the people who are good at getting found on the web are often the ones who can’t write very well? It’s true, look around you. The web continues to serve up and reward bad writing. Bad writing drives people like us—who care about the quality and integrity of our writing—to the brink of disgust, and, let’s face it—the fear of obscurity. Doesn’t seem fair,… -
Thesis Wordpress Theme Review — An Editor’s Perspective
26 Feb 2010 | 11:32 amOne of the 2 Wordpress products I’m proud to be an affiliate reseller of is the Thesis Wordpress Theme by DIY Themes (the other is Organic Themes — more on that in a future post). For a non-code-loving writer and editor like me—and presumably you—the real selling point about Thesis is the no-hassle, back-end control panel that allows you to control its powerful features with deft and ease. What this means is we never have to look at, let alone touch, steaming piles of PHP, CSS or HTML — just some well-labeled check boxes and the amusing ”Big Ass Save… -
Editorial Awareness: So You Think You Got It?
24 Feb 2010 | 4:42 pmEditorial awareness is the act of effectively connecting with readers through clear, honest expression and knowledge on a given subject. To find out if you have it, ask yourself these 3 questions: Why are you publishing? In a low-hassle, tech-enabled world, anyone can broadcast themselves far and wide. But that doesn’t mean they should. We need to keep in mind that zero-cost publishing is prime breeding grounds for modern day scammers and false prophets (example: Craigslist). It’s wiser to assume the high road, where the power to publish is regarded as a gift, a chance to care,…

Firefox Personas, WordPress-style
11 Mar 2010 | 1:37 pmWe recommend open source software whenever we can, and the Firefox browser from Mozilla is one of our favorites. Firefox 3.6 recently came out with persona support, allowing users to skin their browsers with favorite designs and brands. WordPress users everywhere seem to love the W symbol (at WordCamps it shows up on everything from t-shirts to iPhone skins), so it was only natural that WordPress personas would come along. To kick it off, designer Chad Pugh created two WordPress personas based on the WordPress brand: “Vintage Press” and “Inkwell.” These two designs are… -
BuddyPress for One (and All!)
26 Feb 2010 | 12:25 pmBack in April of last year, Matt posted here on the dev blog about the release of BuddyPress 1.0, a plugin that adds a social networking layer to an installation of WordPress MU. Many people were excited about the idea, but were unable to experiment with BuddyPress because they ran single installations of WordPress rather than the multi-site WordPress MU. To those people, good news! A little over a week ago Andy Peatling, founder and lead developer of BuddyPress, announced the release of BuddyPress 1.2, which can be used on single installations of WordPress. Congratulations, BuddyPress! And… -
Menus, the Merge, and a Patch Sprint!
23 Feb 2010 | 11:56 amA Report from the 3.0 Development Cycle Menus There’s been a flurry of blog posts about the integration of the WooThemes Custom Navigation into WordPress core, so I thought it was time we posted the official word. For 3.0, the main user-facing feature we wanted to include was a better site menu management system. Currently, dealing with menus is clunky, using Page IDs or in some cases categories, if a theme uses categories instead of pages for the menu. We wanted a menu system that had the drag and drop ease of the widget management screen, could combine Pages, Categories, and Links,… -
WordPress On The Go
17 Feb 2010 | 8:54 amI like to moderate comments when I’m waiting for something: a checkout clerk to help me, the dentist to call me back to the office, a soy chai to be made. I don’t lug my laptop everywhere I go,* so I love it that we have mobile apps that make this possible. I don’t know of any other blogging platform that has mobile apps for iPhone, Android and Blackberry. Do you? The iPhone app is up to version 2.2 (note that iPhone app version numbers do not correlate to WordPress core versions, due to separate dev cycles), while the Android and Blackberry apps are brand new. You can write…

More Small Businesses Using Social Media to Level the Playing Field
9 Mar 2010 | 7:27 amBy Marian ShortSenior Account Executive, MediaQuotient According to Shel Holz, while some small companies may feel more hesitant about engaging consumers through social media, doing so can potentially benefit them more than their larger competitors – while using a smaller marketing budget. A new survey by the University of Maryland’s Robert H. Smith School of Business shows that not only are more small businesses turning to social media venues for increased ROI and heightened visibility, but 75 percent of respondents discovered ways of improving efficiency and almost half identified new… -
Kondek Speaks
3 Feb 2010 | 12:45 pmBy Charlie KondekDirector, New Media Relations I was absolutely thrilled to be profiled at Bulldog Reporter. I got to sound off on a lot of things dear to me, not just our business but the future of our industry. For example: Q: What do you make of the whole "who owns digital" debate? "Owning digital" is probably the wrong way to put it. I'd say in general PR should own social media and advertising should own online advertising and content creation. But, of course, these distinctions are blurring. Honestly, while the lines between PR and advertising are fuzzy, operationally there are still… -
Facebook Metrics Businesses Have Been Longing For
27 Jan 2010 | 11:03 amBy Eden LittWeb Project Manager Last week, Facebook released a new feature for fan page administrators that will greatly benefit our clients. Authenticated pages with at least 10,000 fans will now feature two new metrics under status updates: Raw Impressions and Feedback Rate. But what do they mean? Raw Impressions indicate the number of times a post has “rendered.” In other words, every time the post is displayed on the page’s wall, in a fan’s live or news feed, or in a Facebook widget, it counts as an impression. Feedback Rate calculates the number of comments and likes received on… -

12 Mar 2010 | 6:00 amIs there a full moon constantly setting over the SoMe industry communities these days? Seriously! Is it me or are we all starting to notice some interesting (others would say disturbing) behaviours falling out of these trade communities? We can all appreciate the dynamics at work when we’re in various situations: eg. we act differently walking solo down the street vs. brainstorming with a peer in a café vs. bouncing around an online community stuffed full of various personality types. We let the world see different behaviours and characteristics depending on our evironment. That’s not… -

Structure your posts for better impact
9 Mar 2010 | 3:00 amHave you ever given any thought to how you structure your posts? It makes a big difference in how much and how thoroughly they’re read. Here’s some clever tricks you can try to improve your post’s structure. Don’t bury the lead (Or bury the lede, if you want to be an anachronistic word snob. Which I do.) Journalists are taught the inverted pyramid structure of writing, where you put the single most important statement at the top of the page, then flesh out in more detail further down. This works very well on the internet: most website visitors skim rather than read. If you put the…

Got Blog? Why People Love Blogging
3 Jan 2010 | 6:56 pmA new phenomenon that has become immensely popular amongst Internet users is “Blogging”. The term refers to making an online journal and which uses a reverse chronological order to display contents. It is at the blog owner’s discretion how many blog entries to make and when. New posts may be put up once every day, a week, a month or more than once. He can also opt to post less often. It all depends on his own choice. More often than not, the postings on a blog are interrelated in some manner. This is, however, not the case always and bloggers may write about anything they… -

Ars Technica’s Ken Fisher on Ad Blocking
12 Mar 2010 | 3:05 amI’ve written at length before on the subject of ad blocking and how it hurts your favorite websites. My diatribes have been a little strongly worded in the past, which may blunt the effect I intended them to evoke. Fortunately, a much larger site than I has published an article on the subject, and their article, I believe, does a better job at explaining the publishers’ side of things. Ars Technica’s Editor-in-Chief, Ken Fisher, recently penned Why Ad Blocking is devastating to the sites you love, a piece that presents, quite well, the facts of what ad blocking does to a… -
Envato Redesigns Tuts+ Sites Again
11 Mar 2010 | 3:01 amOnce again, Envato has redesigned their Tuts+ blogs. The changes are primarily evolutionary, though there is a big difference. The new layout features a wider content area and a stronger focus on larger screen sizes. One of the first things I noticed was that the sites’ advertisement strategy seems to have been rethought. There are no more large leaderboard or 250×250 banners; instead, there are only 125×125 banners. They sit at the top of the narrow sidebar and run down the side of the page in a single column. It actually looks pretty good. They’re out of the way, yet… -

Google hreview Rich Snippets in WordPress
8 Mar 2010 | 3:31 amHave you ever noticed that some product review results in Google display a little 5-star rating under the title? What you’re seeing is something that Google calls a “Rich Snippet” — some metadata pulled from a microformat embedded on the page the result links to. Google supports a few microformats in their search results. vCard data can be displayed in some cases, upcoming events can be shown for theaters and event centers, star ratings can be displayed for reviews, etc.. Joost de Valk has put together a tutorial on how to add the hreview microformat to your WordPress…

My New Baby – The Unveiling – Enter The Drawing And Win
13 Mar 2010 | 2:30 pmLife works in mysterious ways. Sometimes we take a detour on the highway of life, and it’s because we did, we end up in a better place. Sometimes an affliction we have becomes our platform. Sometimes we’re in the right place at the right time. Sometimes that which haunts us, becomes an asset. My Story For the first two years of my blogging journey, one of my biggest challenges was learning how to change the header on my blog. I couldn’t figure it out, so I used a generic theme with a nondescript header. In 2009 when I changed my theme, I “cheated” and chose a… -

Be Careful What You Wish For
6 Mar 2010 | 4:53 pmWhen we set goals for ourselves, we often neglect to look at the complete picture. Take for example, actors. They crave to to see their name up in lights, make big bucks like their peers or predecessors, and may want a life of luxury where anything they ever wanted is well within their reach. In fact, if they achieve fame, materially they can have it all. But…there’s a flip side to fame. When an actor becomes well known, others want a piece of them. Maybe it’s a photo, compromising or other. Maybe it’s their money. Or their friendship. After awhile, some begin to… -

S-L-O-W Down – Blogging Is Not A Race
28 Feb 2010 | 3:52 amBlogging is defined as a hobby. You know. In the same category as other hobbies such as scrap-booking, fishing, quilting, collecting, etc… Take for example, when someone decides to make a quilt. They don’t race to get it done. No. They take time to find a pattern. Then they pick out the perfect fabric. They’ll carefully cut out each piece and painstakingly start making their blocks. When their blocks are done, they’ll arrange them “just so”, stitch them together, etc….. It may be years before the quilt is done. And when it is, they can sit back and…

A humorous day in the life of a new blogger
14 Mar 2010 | 5:02 pmThe first blog known to man was published in the seventh century by a wild hunter who went by the name of Elvis Beowulf. Beowulf ’s blog gives us a great insight into seventh century Britain. From Dan Brown’s illuminating translation published in 2004 and the movie based on it (New Wolves on the Blog starring Tom Hanks, Sharon Stone and Madonna) we are able to learn a lot about early Anglican blogging. His entry for February 29th 694 is especially enlightening: I woke early this morning. For breakfast I killed an owl and washed it down with two tankers of home made ale. I woke up… -
Reader comment: counting keyword density and worrying about SERP’s
11 Mar 2010 | 4:02 pmAfter my WordPress SEO post earlier this week, loyal reader Brian Prows sent in some great points via email and I wanted to share them with you guys: I’ve been using Scribe now for a few weeks and it has helped somewhat with SEO. You’re going to find it challenging, however, writing posts with titles like “101 ways to Capture your Reader’s Interest.” Scribe wants prime keywords at the beginning of the title. So I’ve been cheating a bit by doing it that way in Thesis’ Title section for SEO and making the actual title different. It’s curious that… -

1 Mar 2010 | 11:10 amLast week I was made aware of the launch of ebuzzing in the UK. EBuzzing is a simple way to monetize a blog by creating content for different brands and featuring videos and other content of different brands. Basically the deal is that you register on ebuzzing.com, it is simple and free and you get your blog approved. When your blog is approved, you will then get offers from brands that want to be featured on your blog. There are no obligations so you get to pick and choose if you want to feature something or not and you also get to set your own price. There are different…

Passing the CCNA Exam
17 Feb 2010 | 8:59 pmAfter a year of on and off again studying of Cisco’s CCNA I can finally say that I am CCNA certified. It’s not an easy exam to pass. The CCNA exam is a lot harder compared to the Network+, which was my last certification. The format between the Comptia and Cisco exams are definitely different. The CCNA requires a lot more studying and with experience it may be a lot easier. Hands on experience is a plus with the CCNA. Physical routers and switches are a big advantage for doing labs while doing theory. If purchasing hardware is out of the question there is Packet Tracer which you… -

2010 IT Goals and Skills
6 Jan 2010 | 11:59 amIn the past I’ve focused on To Do lists and they never really pan out well for me. This year will be a little different. The To Do list will still be there but it will reflect my “To Be” list. I recently attended an inspirational talk and he got me thinking about focusing on what you want to be. When you focus in that aspect it will eventually define what you need to do to get there. So what I’ve done is listed here what I want to be in regards to Information Technology. Of course, what I want to be may change in the future but this is what I want to be at the moment. -
User VLAN Do Not Acquire DHCP Address
8 Dec 2009 | 9:00 amWhen configuring VLANs on a layer 3 Cisco switch we often tend to segment our network by grouping devices in certain VLANs for security/departmental/geographical purposes. Enabling inter-VLAN routing allows all the devices on different VLANs to communicate with each other. If you’ve placed DHCP devices on a VLAN separate from the DHCP server you’ll notice that those devices will not receive an IP address. For example, your DHCP server is on VLAN 2 and your users are on VLAN 3. To allow your users’ computers to acquire an IP address from the DHCP server on VLAN 2 you’ll… -

If I Were To Start All Over Again…
12 Mar 2010 | 6:08 amToday, my blogging efforts enjoy a certain bit of inertia. It is easier for me to do things because I have an audience and I have traffic. What if I didn’t have it? If you take all that I’ve learned over my last 12 years of blogging and told me to start over again from scratch, how would I go about it? Let me walk you through what I’d do. In fact, this is very similar to what I did when I launched this very blog a couple of years ago. Establish Your Platform In order to begin reaching out in your market, you need to have a home base – your blog. So, set up some hosting… -

However, this blog is all about being REAL with you and help you guys make as much money as possible from your blogging. What Is Strategic Positioning? Honestly, I just came up with… -
Project Update: Conferences & The Blogger Bubble
8 Mar 2010 | 8:00 amThis is my weekly project update, where I tell you what I’ve been up to this week in my business and share what’s on my mind. I’m fresh back from Continuity Summit, an event hosted by Ryan Lee up in Stamford, CT. All in all, great event. Ryan did a great job in delivering a lot of content. In many conferences, I’ll be in and out of the room. A lot of networking happens out in the hallways, after all. However, I attended almost every speaker this time because they were all good. I have a lot of notes sitting in Evernote to go over and process. Continuity Summit is an internet marketing… -
A Conversation Can Make You More Money
4 Mar 2010 | 5:40 amThis is a guest post by Sean Smith of Powerofmore.net. Recently I took a trip to visit a close friend. The purpose of my trip was not necessarily for business, but some how I always manage to meet someone during my conversations and interactions with others who wants to do business with me. After meeting probably the tenth person during my travels who was interested in my services, it donned on me that the questions I typically ask during my conversations with others whom I’m meeting for the first time create an infections environment where they become excited about what I have to offer… -
Talking About Making Money Online In Order To Make Money Online
3 Mar 2010 | 9:05 amOne of the most common confusions any new blogger asks themselves is… What should I blog about in order to make money? Many of the times, the conclusion ends up as follows: The people making good money online are the ones who talk about making money online. It leads to a huge catch-22. It leads to skepticism. But, is it true? Why Its A Myth In my opinion, it is a myth. My own experience tells me it is. I was making a six figure income as a blogger in the technology market – WELL before I ever uttered the first word about blogging for money. The problem is that people looking to make money…

5 Steps To Take When Writing Your Article
17 Feb 2010 | 5:01 am“How do you write your articles?” A question that I was asked various times and I thought that I had to write an article about it and share its answer with you guys. It’s very healthy for any blogger and her/his blog to set a certain criteria/routine of how they’re going to create content for their blogs. Personally I follow some steps in every article I write that I think are “a-must” for every article, there are other steps I do with some articles only. Before listing these steps or things I do, I would like to say that with time these steps turn into a habit. 1- Collect… -
Difficulties I Am Facing As a Part-Time Blogger
16 Feb 2010 | 6:48 amAs most of you know, I am planning to take my blog to the next level and generate full income from it or at least from my online presence/connections. I have to agree that in order to take it to the next level I need to dedicate time for it and commit and honestly this is appearing to be very difficult with my current situation, since I am a full-timer and sometimes I need to stay late at work and I have some other responsibilities alongside that as well. Having said all of this, I will still try hard and do my best to make it happen and quit my 9-5 job just for the sake of this blog! Being a… -
Is Google Buzz going to buzz?
10 Feb 2010 | 6:35 amLast night the announcement and launch of Google Buzz buzzed the whole sphere on all levels. But the question is: “Is Google Buzz going to buzz on the long-term or it’s going to be a momentum and that’s it?” I personally have various concerns about Google Buzz specially that it still has not yet been added to my Gmail, which I think is a sin in launching any new product! Earlier last year Google launched Google Wave, which I personally considered as a one great collaboration tool and I have used it in different projects ever since. When Google first launched Wave, a lot of people… -

Saturday Discussion - Being "The Free Advice Guy"
13 Mar 2010 | 2:48 amWhatever your niche, in time, your community of readers will start to make contact with you through other means, most usually email. Image: FreeDigitalPhotos.net Many of those emails will be asking for advice or opinion, as you have carefully established yourself as an authority in your market place. At first, it's a wonderful feeling, to have been sought out by someone purely based on your reputation. But then the number and frequency increases, and as much as you want to help everyone who reaches out, the whole process can turn into a huge time thief. I'm still at the stage where I… -
Achieving Escape Velocity on your Blog

What Bloggers Can Learn From Buskers
12 Mar 2010 | 8:36 amThis is a guest post by Adrian Swinscoe. Here's a story about a band that I saw busking in Covent Garden in London back in 2005. I'll hopefully show you how they focused on their craft and their audience and by doing so were able to sell CDs, eventually get discovered and now have a multi-album deal and are an award winning band......oh, and i'll tell you how all of this offers a great parallel for bloggers. The Story I first came across Portico Quartet, a 4-piece modern jazz group from London, when they were busking in Covent Garden back in 2005 or so. I'm a bit of a jazz fan so was… -
Reaching a tipping point in your online business
11 Mar 2010 | 6:43 amOne of the most exciting days of my life was when we did the monthly accounts for my wife's travel blog, and realized we had earned a full time salary from it. It had been a long and hard road, but we had started something from nothing, with the smallest of investments, and we had genuinely created a full time income from it. Every word written, every aspect of the design and every cent earned had come from the two of us, with a lot of help from the fantastic community of readers. It's a corny phrase, but for me, it was life changing. We had proved to ourselves that ordinary people like us…

Do You Swear on Your Blog?
8 Mar 2010 | 2:39 pmDo you ever drop an F-bomb on your blog? Sometimes it’s called for, sometimes it’s just inappropriate, and for some people it’s just a natural way to express themselves. It’s for you to decide how you want to express yourself. You will probably want to decide what type of audience you want to have before you decide to drop an F-bomb on your blog. New blog designer on Blogger
11 Mar 2010 | 11:30 amA year in the making, we just released the new template designer on Blogger. The announcement is at the Official Google Blog, and additional posts at Blogger Buzz and the Blogger in Draft blog provide more detail about what's up. I've just updated my design, so if you haven't been to the site in a while, go take a peek. This is a huge step forward for Blogger, and is something we've been dying to release. Unlike past efforts, this isn't a rigid set of default (ugly) templates which are hard to customize. You get sliders to update the column widths, point and click ability to select the… -
Hello Technorati, old friend
5 Mar 2010 | 1:01 pmLast fall, I spoke at the Internet Summit on a panel with Richard Jalichindra, the CEO at Technorati. They had recently relaunched Technorati, and his continuation of founder David Sifry's "state of the blogosphere" was a good take on what was new on blogs. His data mirrored what we see at Blogger: there are more blogs than ever, we're growing faster than ever, and there are more people reading blogs than ever before. It's a vibrant medium, and it's an exciting time to be in the space. I told Richard then that I had been a long time fan of Technorati - as an early blogger, it was the first… -
YouTube Captions: This is Big.
4 Mar 2010 | 5:06 pmI don't upload a lot of video to YouTube, but that's going to change. Two nights ago, as we were preparing to launch the FTP Migration Tool, I wanted to do a quick video walk-through to show users how it would work. The video's 8 minutes long, and I was excited to get it done and up ahead of the actual launch so people could get a sense of things before diving in: I announced it on Buzz, and almost immediately one of our users (someone I've corresponded with on several occasions about Blogger) complained. I was expecting complaints - people aren't thrilled that we've made this decision - but… -

28 Feb 2010 | 11:02 pmErick Schonfeld has three interesting theories as to why Google pushed Google Buzz out the door and into the email client of millions of users, before it was ready for prime time. I’ve tried Google Buzz, and found it to be pretty uninspiring. I’d been thinking that one of Erick’s theories might be at play. A theory that, if true, is going to backfire on Google. I also came up with a fourth theory that I think plays at least a part in this drama. The Twitter Negotiating Power Theory One of Erick’s theories is that Google really wants to buy Twitter, and launching Buzz… -
Record Review: James Keyes – Ruminations
28 Feb 2010 | 5:51 pmI get a lot of music submissions, in the hopes that I’ll review the record here or at GoodSongs.Com (which is now here also). Assuming a submission is reasonably targeted to my taste, I listen to at least part of it, though I am horribly backed up at the moment. Tonight I received a copy of James Keyes’ new record Ruminations (purchase at CD Baby). Something- I can’t say what exactly- made me queue up the record right away, while I was working on something else. Man, am I glad I did. This is good stuff. Sort of a gritty, but melodic alternative country sound, at…

Are you going to SXSWi this year? Let's Meet up!
10 Mar 2010 | 6:10 pmIf you’re reading this and wondering what the heck is SXSWi, I’ll break it down for you. In 1987 South by South West (SXSW) was started as a Music and Media Conference in Austin, Texas. In 1994 they added Interactive (the “i” in sxsw) and film portion. We (Daniel, Ro, Giannii, and some other Disqus dudes) go every year for a couple reasons outside of amazing barbecue, parties, music, panels, and beer. It’s a chance for us to get in touch with many of our publishers/commenters and have quality (for the most part) conversations. So if you happen to be in Austin, TX this year for… -

Faster Disqus for everybody
3 Mar 2010 | 10:18 amA little bit more than a week ago I posted a blog post where I discussed a project that makes Disqus much faster. At the time the new version was available only for our early adopters and they did a great job by testing it and sending us their feedback. Since then, we’ve fixed a few issues and made some more improvements. And today I am happy to announce that we made this faster, more responsive version available to everybody! You don’t need to do anything to enable it but if you experience any difficulties loading Disqus, there is a new link under the progress bar. By clicking on it, you… -

The Cool Comics of The Oatmeal
9 Mar 2010 | 10:00 amWhat’s the proper way to use a semicolon? How fast can cats run? - and - How long could you survive after kicking a bear in the balls? These and other burning questions are answered in fun graphical form on a Spot Cool Stuff website favorite: The Oatmeal. The site is the creatively genius work of a Seattle graphic designer who never seems to explain the origin’s of his site’s name. Not that it matters. The Oatmeal would be engaging under any moniker. Our favorite pages on Oatmeal are the oversized comics, the ones full of detail that require quite a bit of scrolling to get… -

Where to Watch Classic TV Commercials Online
29 Dec 2009 | 5:43 pmTelevision commercials. Watching them today is an annoyance. But there’s something about seeing commercials from 30~40~50 years ago that can provide a nostalgic and interesting look into bygone times. Here’s our selection of websites where you can watch classic television commercials for free: AdViews When the students and faculty of Duke University aren’t busy watching basketball they apparently spend their time collecting vintage tv commercials. The commercials on their AdViews site are well organized by product, company and year. Unfortunately, you can’t watch them… -
The Website Where Kids Design Their Stuffed Animals
14 Dec 2009 | 5:43 pmSpot Cool Stuff laments the general direction children’s toys have taken away from requiring imagination. Surely, part of the issue has been the proliferation of online gaming websites aimed at kids. But if websites have been part of the problem maybe they can be part of the solution? That’s the idea behind the Israel-based start-up Shidonni. Shidonni has a variety of fun, imagination-enhansing online games for children. Kids can draw animals, for example, upload the drawing to the Shindonni site, and then have their animal creation roam around the virtual Shindonni world for… -
Light In The Box: Wholesale Bargains From China
26 Nov 2009 | 8:50 amIf you’ve traveled to China and been to an electronics or fashion market there chances are you’ve been struck by two facts: 1) How cheap the prices are (relative to North America and Europe); and 2) How many products are available there that aren’t in your home country. To take advantage of these facts you could travel to China with extra room in your suitcase. Or, you could shop at what might be Spot Cool Stuff’s single favorite online store: Light In The Box. From its name you’d think Light In The Box was some sort of lamp store. In fact, it’s a…

Do Bloggers Really Make Money Blogging?
11 Mar 2010 | 3:37 pmI was reading a fantastic interview of David Risley over at RobbSutton.com yesterday and this question popped into my head. Web Secret #92: Chat Roulette
10 Mar 2010 | 5:30 amI wasn't sure I was going to write about Chat Roulette, even though it has over 500,000 unique visitors a day and anywhere from 20,000 to 150,000 concurrent users. And even though it's so big that it's been written up in Fast Company, the New York Times, Mashable, and Tech Crunch - and that's just to name a few. For the uninformed, Chat Roulette is a web site that pairs you with a random videochat partner. You can click "next" any time, or stay with your current pairing. And with that, anything is possible. You could be talking to a cool bunch of people in Ireland about what it's like to live… -
Web Secret #91: In Social Media We Trust
3 Mar 2010 | 5:28 amA truism among social media marketing devotees is that above all, people trust endorsements from their "friends", making social media more effective than other traditional forms of advertising. As an example, if you have a new product, you want to make sure that your Twitter followers rave about it, your Facebook friends become fans, and your Aunt Susie blogs about it.So when Robert Berkman sent me a link to an Advertising Age article that said the exact opposite, I paid attention. (Probably because I had just read Bob's book "The Art of Strategic Listening - Finding Market Intelligence… -

I pressed it and in a matter of seconds I was listening to a voice reading the post. I also had the option to download this instant podcast to my iPod or MP3 player. Remember my delay of gratification issue? I HAD TO HAVE THAT FEATURE ON MY BLOG IMMEDIATELY! So I dropped everything, and clicked on Odiogo - voice your content. Can I write something clever, useful or witty, at least once a week?4. Can I write something clever, useful or witty, at least once a week - for an indefinite period of time?… blogging can be a great idea. They do this primarily via video chat. For hours. Until I tell them to stop. They are different.Kudos to the New York Times' Brad Stone for elaborating on that observation and writing a thought provoking article "The Children of Cyberspace".According to Stone, researchers are…

PayPal India conforms to Government regulations
12 Mar 2010 | 8:49 pmLooks like the recent PayPal India chaos – whereby the personal account holders couldn’t withdraw money to Indian banks – has come to an end! When I tried to withdraw money to my bank account last week, it asked me to declare a purpose for the proceeds received through PayPal (Screenshot below). This is definitely a great move. As I have always maintained, the online income earners need to comply to government rules and regulations while making money. In principle they are bringing in foreign exchange (Forex) to India that’s not accounted for and sometimes not taxed. New… -
Facebook fan page: Create one for your brand or business today
7 Mar 2010 | 5:22 amExactly two years ago, I had maintained that facebook is going to witness explosive growth over its competition. Today it has actually done it and well beyond expectations at that. It’s no more a mere social networking platform but also a place where people market their products and promote their brands. Facebook fan pages have become one of the bare minimum ingredients for any company in order to successfully build its brand and online campaigns (even for offline success). Last night, I spend some time to build a small fan page for DollarShower and I strongly recommend that you build one… -
QueryAds Affiliate Program
24 Feb 2010 | 9:54 pmIn October last year, I had written a review on QueryAds as an alternative to the Google AdSense program as well as an effective search advertising option. Recently they launched an affiliate program and this post is a short review on the same. The QueryAds publisher network is an excellent value proposition for bloggers and webmasters because they share 70% of their revenue with publishers and the payout happens when a $50 threshold is reached. And now they have an unmatched affiliate program where a 10% of the referral revenues for life is given to the affiliates. QueryAds Affiliate Program… -
Spam Comments Fun!
15 Feb 2010 | 2:20 amAfter a week of inactivity on the blogging front, I tried to moderate the pending comments today. Unlike my previous reactions on the spam folder, this time around, I decided to give some respect to the spammers and actually read many of those comments. To be frank, I do not entirely blame them for their backdoor marketing efforts. On the other hand, I thought, some of them are really very creative and childishly funny at times. The following are some of the very interesting spam comments that I keep receiving and my answers to them, if I had actually moderated them in. I am sure, all of you… -
Making Money Online in India gets tougher
9 Feb 2010 | 10:18 amIt has been only a week since PayPal India stopped processing all money transactions to personal accounts in India. They have also blocked the withdrawal of available funds. Apart from receiving the AdSense checks, most of the Indian bloggers and freelancers would have used PayPal for online money transfers and hence the future of their hard earned money remains uncertain. A lot of people think that making money online in countries like India is a really easy to do thing. Indeed, it’s so easy to get started but with all its related risks (Read Online business risks) and a lot more related…

BuySellAds: Faster and Better(Show ads vertically with a click)
24 Feb 2010 | 10:39 amWe all know that internally Google is thinking of considering site loading speed as one of the criteria for ranking the website. Apart form that, faster loading sites are key for grabbing user attention. BuySellAds has come up with an innovative idea of making the javascript ad codes asynchronous(as they call it). When any browser downloads the ad code that displays the ads, it blocks everything else on the page from rendering. And, while this process may take less than a second of the user’s time, it is noticeable and it is a big problem. You can read more at BSA blog. It is frustrating… -
My Experience: Purchasing a Dell Desktop Online
22 Feb 2010 | 4:51 amIt was December 2009, my exams were still going on and I was restless in finding a good configuration for my next best PC! My plan was: If I order the Computer now, it will be processed, built and sent to me by the time my vacations start. Nice plan. But nothing happened as I expected. It was December 26th 2009, and I called up Dell Customer care to place my order. Someone luckily picked up the call(after trying 3 times) and talked to me. I was very happy, but they told me to hold the phone until they transfer my call to Dell Sales person. I was hearing some instructions, recorded sales pitch… -

Twitter Mobile Web Adds Reply, Retweet, Favorite..
1 Feb 2010 | 11:15 amTwitter Mobile Web was friendly only for status update. There was no reply button, no retweet button and no favorite button. It was kind of frustrating to remember the Twitter ID of the person, and then type it in the update box(without spelling mistakes!) and send the reply. Recently Twitter has added bunch of new features to it, to make it more useful. Now I don’t use any Apps, I just use the simple mobile web interface. Some of the things added to Twitter Mobile Web are – reply, retweet, favorite, turn off the images, Popular topics, popular topics of today week etc, real time… -
7 Ways To Get Traffic – Before You Need It!
31 Jan 2010 | 11:44 amOne common question we all hear, and at some point of time have asked – How to get traffic to our new blog? Here are some examples of how I got my first 500 – 800 visits per day in my initial days of blogging: I started it before I actually needed it: 1. Commenting on other blogs: I had spent some time in selecting a domain name(even though I din’t have much knowledge about selecting a good domain name at that time). And started participating in comment section of various blogs – niche which I was interested in. And included the URL of my blog in all the comments(not…

Error 14 – iPod Touch Sync/Restore Error
9 Mar 2010 | 11:45 amMy first sour experience with my first apple product. I bought an iPod touch last thanksgiving and so far, I am pretty impressed with its capabilities. But last weekend, I tried to update my OS into the latest 3.1.3 and ended up pretty much bricking my ipod. The screen was stuck at the sync screen and refused to respond to any action. And when I tried to restore my ipod back into the previous, I got a error 14. Stumped and worried with all the bricking stories, I spent more than two days searching for a solution. And at some point of tinkering with it, it showed up as an iphone! (sigh..wish… -

Will the iPad be ‘StillBorn’?
15 Feb 2010 | 12:01 pmThe most expected product launch of recent years by Apple was definitely the iPad. Those following various tech blogs of the sphere would have heard at least one rumour of the much anticipated device. But when Steve Jobs announced it last month, the reaction could be pretty much summerized as Ooh! Ooh! Oh. But this post is not about the iPad, but about the ambitious Indian startup called Notion Ink and its product Adam. The touted iPad killer impressed me a lot personally and it definitely seems to be one of those devices I would be looking at if I was to ditch my laptop and embrace touch. -
Internet 2009 in numbers

Three Keys to Promoting Change as a Product Benefit
13 Mar 2010 | 6:30 amphoto credit: JesusBranch If you have been an internet marketer or blogger for long you’ve most likely either created your own product or reviewed another marketer’s. Don’t just tell your prospects what the product does, tell them what it can do for them. One of the most overlooked – yet highly crucial – benefits out there is transformation. Most people who begin to invest time building businesses online are looking… -

Frustration Decade: You Need More Than Passion Going Forward
1 Feb 2010 | 5:28 amSeth Godin always resonates with me. I was writing this article here (started on December 22, 2009) and came across a recent post of his titled: Welcome to the Frustration Decade (and the decade of change). Seth kicks off by mentioning a major trend of Change:Change: The infrastructure of massive connection is now real. People around the world have cell phones. The first Internet generation is old enough to spend money, go to work and build companies. Industries are being built every day (and old ones are fading). Science Shows You Can Die of Boredom, Literally
3 Mar 2010 | 11:31 amMonthly magazines from Reader's Digest to Cosmopolitan are inundated with tips on how to sleep better, find happiness, and weave seriously sexy hair. Taking nothing away from being happy and blowing your romantic partner's mind on valentine's day, there are few things as valuable as staying alive.Sometimes we fail to take life and death seriously. Think back to those painful days of calculus class in high school. Like the sounds of a banshee ripping out its entrails, you and your classmates probably screamed the same screams heard year after year - "I'm so bored, I could die!" And yet, did… -
Can Two Tylenol a Day Keep Rejection and Heartbreak Away?
3 Feb 2010 | 8:59 amDid you know there is only one single characteristic that separates extremely happy people from "merely" happy people? They aren't more grateful, kind, or compassionate. They aren't more energized when they wake up in the morning (drinking the same amount of coffee as the rest of us). Rather, they possess an abundance of significant, meaningful, lasting relationships. That is, there are people they can confide in, call on during difficult times, and share joyous events that have absolutely nothing to do with them. Human beings depend on other people for their well-being and survival. We might… -
State of the Union, Haiti, Prison Rape, and More
28 Jan 2010 | 5:17 pmIn the next few days, expect a heap of news articles and talking heads blathering about the State of the Union. What's fascinating is how so many people interpret the same event differently (each through his or her own prism of values and beliefs). It's one of the benefits of living in a democracy. Some people never really listened to the State of the Union. Before Obama said a single word, their reactions were pre-determined by assumptions, their favorite media pundits and personal biases about the Democratic Party. This is one of the costs of living in a culture where few people are trained… -
A Secret to Happiness? Discovering the Pleasures of Uncertainty
18 Jan 2010 | 7:53 amBeing on a national radio show is often a painful experience. Sometimes you simply lack chemistry with the host (and unlike a party there is no alcohol, and nowhere to hide). They take long, deep breaths directly into the microphone, allowing you intimate knowledge of the saliva in their throat. They ask inane questions, "so you're a twin and you have twins, is that weird for you?" They toss around bewildering phrases such as "spiritual transgressions" and "metaphysical escapes" that bring conversations to a standstill. They grab pockets of time to think of their next comment by inserting… -
What Maids Teach Us About Physical Health and Life Longevity: A Lesson in Mindfulness

If I offend anyone, my apologies for failing to master the appropriate terminology. But everything else is true and rather inoffensive. In this brief post, you will learn a single secret to physical fitness and mental health that might translate into longer, better living.Hotel maids are notorious for waking up at ridiculously early hours to start working. They also are confronted with unwanted flesh at surprising intervals and in surprising…

The Easy Blogging Life: Are you Ready for it?
10 Mar 2010 | 9:00 pmWe want everything to be easy. Things are nice when they’re handed to us, aren’t they? The more handouts, easy breaks and close calls we experience, the more we want. All of these things have to do with luck, and the people you interact with on your blog. The “simple life” I’m talking about above is not created by you. In fact, nothing is easily accomplished if you’re the only person in the picture. It’s the people who are around you, and interact with that help make things easier for you. In the world of blogging, those people are your readers. A… -
Interviewing Bloggers and the Tremendous Value it Holds
9 Mar 2010 | 9:00 pmToday, Srinivas Rao, talks about the benefits he has enjoyed by interviewing bloggers for his own site, BlogCastFM. Want to write for us too? One of the things that never ceases to amaze me is the minimal usage of multimedia content by bloggers. As the host and co-founder of BlogcastFM, a podcast for bloggers, it should come as no surprise that I’m a huge fan of doing audio interviews. I’ve benefited tremendously from conducting interviews and they are starting to feel like the gift that keeps on giving. I feel like the industry is lacking in real quality, that I want to send a message to… -
The Iron Maiden Guide to Rockstar Blogging
8 Mar 2010 | 9:00 pmBecoming a huge hit in the world of blogging is tough. Henri Junttila diagnoses the success of his favorite band, Iron Maiden and shows you what you can learn from that success. Want to write for us too? Being a successful blogger depends entirely on what you want to get out of it and what your goals are. When the English heavy metal band, Iron Maiden started, they were nobodies. They remained nobodies for quite a while, until of course their popularity exploded and became known all over the world. Now, the band is quite legendary. I grew up listening to Iron Maiden. Partly because when I was… -

7 Mar 2010 | 9:00 pmI‘m not kidding either. For the first time in weeks, it is warm out (about 57 degrees today), and there is actually a field of green grass showing under the bright sun instead of a blinding white. Why would I, or anyone else want to sit inside on the computer on a day like today? It’s not that I don’t like blogging, or getting to know you guys. It’s all actually very fun to write and interact with everyone who reads my stuff (thanks, by the way). But today, I don’t know. Today, I just don’t feel like it. But I’m doing it anyways. 28 Feb 2010 | 11:09 amHey people, It’s been a couple of weeks since my last post, but I just wanted to get your feedback on something … I am sure many of you will have different views on this, and I would love to hear them. I seem to be hearing quite a lot about whether people are using double opt-in, or whether they are using single opt-in for their list building activities … I have been using double opt-in since my list started, but I notice many people that I speak to regularly are swapping to single opt-in … OR have built their list using entirely single opt-in. Admittedly, there is a… -

Zero to 1300 Subscribers in 9 weeks!
30 Oct 2009 | 5:41 pmHey people, At this second in time, my mailing list stands at 1302 people, and I thought I would write a quick post on how I have achieved this so quickly… from NOTHING! My first subscriber on Aweber was on the 22 August 2009. Previous to that I had an account with GetResponse, of which I only managed to move around 20 people over from. Many were VERY old and some were imported from lists etc in a previous lifetime! I moved to Aweber for the enhanced functionality that they offer over and above other auto responder systems. So how have I achieved over 1300 subscribers in 9 weeks?

SmartBloggerz Have Moved And I Am Back To Blogging
13 Mar 2010 | 6:50 amIt will be my pleasure to announce with this post that SmartBloggerz has now successfully moved to HostGator VPS. Also, that my Exams are now over(and hey, I got Freedom from school for 3 months), I will be able to give more time to blogging. I decided to stay with HostGator because of their Customer Support and my experience(the good one) using it when this blog was on it’s Shared hosting plan. This move was basically made to handle high traffic load and also to try and solve the internal server problems which many people were reporting(even I saw that). Plus, this VPS hosting will… -

What To Do When You Lose Your Google Rankings
17 Feb 2010 | 3:39 amThis is a guest post by Onibalusi Bamidele who is a young blogger and blogs at DataEntryForAll.net. Have you noticed a change in the amount of traffic to your website recently? Have you noticed a decline in your search engine rankings? Then maybe you have lost your Google Rankings. I lost my Google Rankings late last year and I can tell you I was not comfortable(or maybe a little bit comfortable because i have other traffic sources), it became worse to the extent of me not ranking for my website name(this is worse you say!). It is very discouraging to loose your Google Rankings and this… -

Replacing “No comments” with “Leave a comment” in WordPress
8 Mar 2010 | 6:57 amMany WordPress themes display the number of comments. The number of comments is a way to show which posts are popular and which are not. The number of comments show a social proof. For a new blogger, or a blog which doesn’t receive many comments, this can be a challenge. Unfortunately many of the themes are too blunt when there are no comments. For new bloggers and blogs, it’s not uncommon to see “No comments” or “0 comments” on a blog post. Wouldnt’ it be better if it would say “Leave a comment” or “Start the discussion”… -

You should also encourage and ask people to leave comments. Both of these can be done via simple hacks to your WordPress theme. In this post, I’ll show how to show number of comments in WordPress, and the next post shows specifically how to add call to action into comment links by modifying the “No comments” into something like “Start a discussion” instead. Preface I collected various ways to show the number of comments in WordPress… -

Bad reviews – Should you publish them or not?
28 Feb 2010 | 7:33 amMany bloggers review and recommend products and services they use. For example, books they’ve read. But these reviews are often positive, why is that? Is it because it is not worth it to craft the review, if you’re not gonna recommend it? Is it because, you don’t dare to say bad things about the product? Are you afraid you’ll lose the advertisers and/or partners if you publish a bad review? This is the topic of the day for this discussion. I’d like to hear what you think. How to Find More RSS Subscribers for Your Chiropractic Blog
26 Feb 2010 | 6:00 amOver in Blogging Chiros this week, we’re discussing how to bridge the gap between setting up a blog and marketing it via social media networks. Tools like RSS feeds, RSS via email and email newsletter opt-in fields are critical to the success of any serious blogger. Why? Because they allow you to capture leads from some of your most valuable readers. You see, as a business owner, it makes no sense to devote hours in creating quality content if you don’t have a way to capture readers’ contact information outside of what they provide in the comment section of each blog post. -

Blog better by interviewing a better blogger
12 Mar 2010 | 2:00 amIn yesterday’s post Blog better by imitating a blogger who does it well (in hindsight “emulate” would have been a better word choice) I explained how helpful Lisa Irby’s site has been to me since I’ve been blogging and as promised, today I present the responses to a recent interview. Blog better by imitating a blogger who does it well
11 Mar 2010 | 2:00 amI’ve always been a visual learner. If you show me how to do something, I can often get it fairly quickly if I have an opportunity to immediately apply what I’ve learned. Blogging is no different – that’s why when I first started out, I sought out the high ranking blogs and tried to get a feel for how they did things. I knew blogging was more than good design, I needed to know what it was that these bloggers did to stand out from the rest. One day in my search for knowledge, I ran across Lisa Irby’s 2createawebsite blog and was immediately amazed and challenged. -

We all have different experiences with blogging, and we all know what works for us and what drives traffic. I had an experience I’d like to share with you because it completely changed the way I think about blogging. I did my fair share of guest blogging, but only got a few visitors each time. I… -

Many business owners are savvy and connected enough to realize that they need to be involved and have a social media presence. I truly believe that the frustration and confusion that so many experience can come from the over-complication of a pretty simple concept. You’re not stupid. More than likely, you’re super-smart! What if we break social media marketing down into a three piece puzzle made up of the words themselves? Could more success really come from a better understanding here? I… -

Follow Up To The Tweeting Cemetery: “Chad Speaks”
3 Mar 2010 | 4:54 amLast month, when I wrote “The Tweeting Cemetery” I didn’t know whether the story would be well received or not. The article generated some passionate discussion in the comments, and I’m happy to report that the story is far from over! The story caught the attention of Desiree Scales, CEO of Bella Web Designs, Inc. in Atlanta. Desiree hosts the weekly podcast at The Bella Buzz where she addresses internet market strategies, including social media. Desiree is a valued friend to me, and the story couldn’t have been carried forward any better. The article that accompanies…

6 Best Practices with Product Review Sites
9 Mar 2010 | 12:57 pmSo – I’m gonna step back in time just a bit and get back to some of the very basic things that have been working for me on product review sites over the past few months. If you recall from a few days ago, I still lack focus… and due to that haphazard way of building product review sites in volume, I have definitely seen a few things working better than others. I confess, in the last 90-120 days – I have added more than 30 review sites. The following items are the things I’ve learned from doing them inconsistently across several sites! Best Practices for Product… -
Chaos and Focus Go Hand in Hand
3 Mar 2010 | 7:38 amMy name is Mark and I lack Laser and Pinpoint focus – there, I said it! Now where’s my fucking coin? Over on the ReviewAzon forum, a newer member asked a very interesting question… that had me, once again recognizing what many people have said is my biggest area of opportunity. “If you only had 20 hours a week for Internet Marketing, How Would You Spend it? Would you focus on ONE site, or develop MANY sites?” My reply, which I will get later, was prompted by one of those rare moments when I looked at my own efforts, and acknowledge that I just run too chaotic… -

Self-Esteem and Your Teen
12 Mar 2010 | 5:38 amI have yet to figure out exactly when it happens. There is an unidentified moment that a child goes from enjoying life and exploring the world to becoming overtly aware of what others think. It does not happen gradually. It is more of a before and after type of transition; like crossing an imaginary line into a new dimension, with no way to go back. Some seem to handle it gracefully. Some embrace it and use it to their advantage. Some seem as if they have been preparing for this moment their entire lives, while others seem totally caught off guard by it. Long before the well identified… -
V-Day can be dreadful
10 Feb 2010 | 2:12 pmI find that the date of February 14th, Valentine’s Day, fills me with dread! A simple holiday, yet not so simple for my brain to process not going overboard or trying so hard to be original. I not only try to think of something besides candy or baking or cards for my husband, but I also try to think of what I can do for my kids to be able to celebrate with them. At times, I just want to say it is a silly holiday where we don’t want to go out to eat and we don’t want to celebrate at all. I know, G for Grinch, right? As my kids get older though, I find them so excited to know that mommy… -
Watching Out for the Compliant Child
30 Jan 2010 | 6:56 amAs a mother, we are intensely thankful for our compliant child. Usually the most serious of our brood, he or she is the rule follower, seeking to help us keep everyone else in line. Long before we suspect that she has done anything wrong, she comes to us with head hanging low, admitting her shortcomings and outlining her plan for an acceptable punishment. A compliant child is a blessing to any mother who often wonders if we are getting through to our children. But as the compliant child grows older, it is important for us to help her guard against this personality strength that could later… -

Christmas Let-down and the Second Semester Blues
4 Jan 2010 | 7:43 pmLet’s face it. We all find it difficult to get back in the swing of things following the long break over Christmas. With the welcome reprieve from homework, deadlines and alarm clocks, this feeling is magnified for our high school kids. After the stress that comes and goes with mid-term exams, it is never easy to approach the last half of the year with the same intensity of a new school year. The entire family must be retrained to go to bed early and embrace the school routine, and as the second semester approaches, an atmosphere of dread can quickly overtake our households. My own…

Guest Post Friday: You Can Go Your Own Way
12 Mar 2010 | 2:35 pmA couple of years ago, I found myself unemployed due to downsizing in the the company I worked for where I was the Sales Manager. The owner of the company decided he didn’t need me and decided to let me go. It was actually his idea that I start my own company and become his competition! So, that is exactly what I did. We remained good friends and looked at each other as colleagues, not competition. When I started my small contracting business, I wasn’t scared or nervous because I had owned other businesses in the past. The difference was, my other businesses dealt with B2B… -

The “B” Word is Missing – Let’s Bring it Back
11 Mar 2010 | 5:28 amI want it now. I don’t want to have to work for it, but I still want it. I deserve it. It’s my turn. I’ve suffered enough. This is the type of thinking that scars entrepreneurs and keeps people from achieving their dreams. They aren’t willing to work for it…they see others becoming successful, and instead of analyzing that process in order to see how they can repeat it (hence the book, Beyond Blogging), they ignore the years of hard work that successful people might have put in and instead focus on the end result. Jealousy and bitterness replaces hope and optimism, and all too… -
